Title: Pix Please = YOUR BIKE + ABANDONED SITE
Post by: DOOFUS on April 17, 2011, 08:33:17 PM
I thought it would be cool to post pix that included our CVO at an abandoned site or old historic site or just a cool rural shot.  *** PLEASE INCLUDE THE LOCATION SO PERHAPS WE CAN GO SEE IT TOO ! ***

My first one = an old abandoned post office on US 340 South in VA just inside VA over the WV line.  Fascinating that this was in operation just after the Civil War.  I'm sure in that part of VA and WV many vets used this post office.  DOOFUS

Abandoned gas station somewhere in WV during the CVO GTG at New River Gorge

LTBawb's and my 05 SEEG's

You can't see it, but just in view on the right is an old tire changer.

Don could have had one for free if he showed up to the rally.

Don't have pics sorted for this kind of topic.  But like the idea a lot.  Thanks for coming up with it.  Don't always stop for pics but nearly always at least watching for this kind of thing.  Especially old abandoned gas stations.

This one is on a stretch of the old original road bed of US 66 about an hour from my house.

This was on the trip to Cripple Creek a few years ago.  Old abandoned (mostly) advertising and social commentary on the side of US50 just outside of Dodge City, KS.

Not an abandoned building but an abandoned road.  Rode it right out on the old Sante Fe Trail.  Got so much traffic in its day you can still see the pack marks from the stage coaches that went west.

Yo Two Lane:

Just went by the old rock building on Friday.  Took the shortcut through Carthage to Springfield.  If the weather is good , going to ride th 3xred on the same road back to Springfield this Friday..

If you go far enough, you'll also see the old Mickey Owen Baseball School where I pitched alot of games when I was young.

That site is close enough we can always get good pics there if we want them.  Coming up your way in the morning.  Going up 43 there used to be a dilapidated old store at the edge of Bronaugh (ok, at least more dilapidated than the rest of Bronaugh).  Must've finally fallen down a couple summers ago though.  It was another good site for interesting pictures.

Hi Djkak!   :)

It's been a while....

Yeah, I’ve been busier than a one arm wallpaper hangar with a bloody nose. I read the post about southeastern Arizona’s Hwy 191 and I had to log in with a reply. I’d probably be more active if that darn Hoist would come out and play once in awhile!  :smilie_staub:

I’m riding to California again later this year and have tentative plans to ride through the mountains of British Columbia. That is another place that I’ve been with the Pickup and trailer full of sleds but never on two wheels.

How’ve you been; bike running good? Are you going to get a piece of the high water in your neighborhood?

Bikes running great...  I put a 120 in it over the winter just for fun...  (And it is!)

No high water around me...  Even if there were, I live on the highest ground in the county.  Feel sorry for the folks that are affected, though...

I believe the entire town is up for sale.  I believe for $800k you can own the whole place, all the buildings, 60 some acres, and your own jail.

Last time I was in Scenic, six Native Americans from Pine Ridge in a pickup truck ripped off the gas station for $10 in gas.  I thought, if you're going to do something like that, why not just fill the tank?  The Long Branch was a pretty cool bar considering it was in the middle of no where.

With a group effort we could buy it and have a Sturgis hang out.  :idea3: :smilie_eimer:  Doc

Yeah, but who wanted to get stuck out there as the groundskeeper during the rest of the year?  For $800K I had some goofy ideas, but then the reality set in that they call the Badlands, the Badlands for a reason!

I will volunteer for the "groundskeeper" job.  Do I get to be Sheriff too?  I can see it now me, a big stetson hat, and my six shooter playing Wyatt Earp with the prairie dogs.   :huepfenlol2:

Just make it credit/debit cards only. Then sell pre-paid credit cards inside for 80 cents credit on the dollar.  We'll make up that $10 and then some!

Seriously, if we have enough who put in a few dollars, I'm sure we could write up a charter and do something with it.

$10K x 100, to start with a little working capital.

Might be kind of fun.

Abandoned gas station somewhere in WV during the CVO GTG at New River Gorge

LTBawb's and my 05 SEEG's

You can't see it, but just in view on the right is an old tire changer.

Don could have had one for free if he showed up to the rally.

Satellite dish on the left of the BLDG makes me think the ghost get the NFL Ticket  ;)

Here are the coordinates for the abandoned snow fort location, a dozen miles north of Hebgen Lake, near West Yellowstone.

This is a good example of spring riding, when the snow is setup and provides access to areas normally out of reach, at least for stock machines; although the stock machines today perform like the mod machinery from a few years back.

Not in the pics I posted above.  We were in the dirt on several occassions Easter weekend so we were all running around with a fine layer of dust on our bikes. :nixweiss:   And riding back up through the Nevada desert to home, the front ends were covered in bugs by the time we hit the garage.  But on more than one occassion, at a gas station or some other stop, I've been asked "how do you keep it so clean?".  It's not......it's filthy! :nervous:

Great pictures!  Does anyone notice that all the bikes look "showroom" clean?  I'm happy to see that others are as obsessed as I am with a clean looking bike even on long hauls  :2vrolijk_21:
I do clean mine more than I have any other vehicle, but I got it to ride, not to polish :P

At Cape Mendocino at the end of the Lost Coast Highway, western most point of the mainland US, and the Highway needs to remain lost, cause it is terrible!

Actually the western most point of mainland USA is Ozette Washington.

Overheard from an onlooker while these were being snapped: "That thing is pure SEX!"  I turned around and it was some 14 year-old (or so) kid.  I guess Harley can still attract the young 'uns. LOL

Eek!  I never thought about that! :nervous: :o

Nah, these were just a couple of good farm kids enjoying the day down by the Illinois river on their bicycles.  I talked to 'em for awhile.  They let me know they thought the ol' hot rod would look better without the tour-pak ::) and I let 'em know they make them that way, too, but that this baby was meant for eatin up the miles. ;)  Just a little shy of 400 today, as a matter of fact.

This bike is sweet! :huepfenjump3:

That wall behind the bike dont look the safest either.   But the bike looks great sitting there.   My son is 15 he likes mine but he loves sport bikes but that will change as he gets older.  It did for me as well.  It will as you change on what type of riding your doing.   Got to love the ultras

Well, how about abandoned in the sense that "Light Ships" are no longer in service. "Abandoned" and replaced with towers and modern electronics, and the Nantucket is no longer gubby-mint owned. It is in private ownership now.
