HOGASMS (Doug & Cathey), Bojiboy (Greg & Lou), GMM/AMM (Gary & Anita) met Terrie and I here at our home mid day on Friday and we headed to meet the rest of the group in the bay area.
We headed south on Hwy. 99 but quickly ran into both lanes totally stopped. I decided we'd take a bit more scenic route and we headed over the Hwy. 160, aka the river road, following the river from Sacramento to the bay area.....taking us across the Sacrameto River in two different locations on the ferry.
-
even the new ferry.....the Real McCoy II
-
The Sacramento River is wide at this point. This is where Humphrey, the humpback well took a wrong turn a few years ago and ended up right here in this area for a couple weeks.
-
We stopped in Locke for lunch then on to the Best Western in Hayward. Unloaded and headed for Jim's shop, Metal Dragon.
We hooked up with Jim (hd-dude), Jeff (Envithix), Don (D31960), Andy (ak), Ernie (Erniezap), Dick (Jock), Chip & Nancy (SBB) and Jon & Susan (Jonga & wasjons).
-
We rode throuh a canyon to Pleasanton for dinner.
-
.
-
Mexican dinner....great food and great dinner...
-

-
This thing came cruisin buy the restaurant.........but it had Texas plates on it. :nixweiss:

-
Soon we were on our way back to the hotel.
Plans were to pull out at 7:30 a.m. headed for the Napa Valley....
-
Waiting for Jon to catch up....
-
Does anybody know where Jon is?
-
there he is. As Gabe would say......let's roll!
-
A pit stop in Oakville, in the Napa Valley.
-
Gary & Anita......caught in the out house together. ;D
-
the North Carolina krew......they let the folks from Iowa hang with them too.... :)
-
beautiful weather to ride the Valley of the Moon (aka Napa Valley).....not to hot, not to cold.....just great for riding.
We rode the full length. When we started at the south end the winery gates were all still closed (to early in the morning). But by the time we got to the north end of the valley and after our pit stop.....we noticed that the limos and town cars were starting to break out and the winery gates were opening up.
-
We rode over the mountain, along the Russian River stopping for gas and lunch in Guernville. They actually had a parade for the CVO owners coming to town. ;) Here's a real guernville cowboy (riding on the bucket of the backhoe). :huepfenlol2:
-
the Marines were represented....
-
and the guernville cowgirl. ;D
-
small town USA....
-
Lunch stop at the local tacqueria down the street.
-
A couple of the locals....just couldn't resist. Made their day....
-
On our way.....down to the ocean. Soon we were at Jenner By The Sea.
The beach below is a major attraction for sea lions where the are able to beach theirselves and sleep undisturbed by people.
-
The out of state visitors first view of the Calif. coastline and the Pacific ocean.
-
north bound along Hwy. 1 on the Calif. coast....
-
Chip & Nancy....
-
Susan on the left, Jon on the right....
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
Another pit stop and time for a gatorade....
-
detour to the Pt. Arena Lighthouse on the north coast....
-
Jock, Chip & Nancy climbed the stairs up to the light for the view.....which is well worth the $7.00 a head or $25 for a car or group of motorcycles. :2vrolijk_21:
-
The museum on the point has interesting information and displays
-
Jon's beautiful 10 SEUC :2vrolijk_21:
The before pic.....more on this later. :nervous:
-
Chip & Nancy's son, aka the guy who gets allllllll the girlz, aka our friend Jeff.
-
Susan, they charge room rent here....
-
surrounded by water on three sides...
-
the California rugged coast
-
My goal in laying this route out for the visiting members that traveled long distances was to show them as much of Nor Cal that most want to see in the three days that we had.....to make it as exciting as possible.
-
There's Chip & Nancy
-
the tour guides
-
and the tour guide rides
-
My goal in this thread is to create a photo journal for the visitors to look back on a relive it over and over. :2vrolijk_21:
-
It looks like you did a great job with the route and the pictures. Wish I was there.
-
a nice visit and rest stop at a California Lighthouse, Pt. Arena Lighthouse.... http://www.pointarenalighthouse.com/
-
Nancy on the Pacific....

Terrie leading the group north bound on Hwy. 1

da man Jock

Susan and Jon
-
I love to ride the coast when the weather is good. :2vrolijk_21:
-
the plate says it
-
Jeff
-
and Terrie
-
We made it to our hotel in Willits for the first night.
We all went across the street to a place called Lumberjacks that had some awsome food. The hamburger looked more like a flying saucer and had a 2 lb. hamberger patty on it. :o
By the first evening I was already being asked "does California have any straight roads?" :nixweiss: Come on now....we've just barely begun.
Up early the next morning we headed north on Hwy. 101 to the Ave. of The Giants.
-
Spend a day riding through here and you'll never have to ask why they call it "Ave. of The Giants". The oldest and largest living things on earth. :2vrolijk_21:
-
did I say LARGE?
-
.
-
The tree dwarfs Jock whie he's doing his thing...
-
Chip is still wondering how far up the top is. :)
-
Jeff admiring Jon's SEUC
-
Susan was stung by a bee on the eye lid, just as we had pulled over so she asked Nancy to ride her bike. Yep, Nancy got to ride a bike through the Ave. of The Giants. :2vrolijk_21:
She was anxious to get rollin......"when do we get to drive though a tree?"
-
Nancy got her wish....
-
and rumor has it that Chip charged Susan a $20 spot to be able to ride through with him. :nixweiss:
-
Jock pulling up the rear.
This tree is 3,000 years old, nearly all the base has been burned out by forest fire years and years ago yet the tree is still alive and growing.
-
We found a spot where the sun was actually able to shine through
-
a turtle that was in the pond
-
While Nancy wanted to ride through a tree, Chip wanted to ride this road...
-
this road requires a pit stop or two
-
.
-
Terrie's jokingly giving Jock a hard time about picking the California Golden Poppy. It's Calif's state flower and supposed to be illegal to pick. :nixweiss:
-
you can see this road is pretty narrow through here....definately no room for two cars to pass each other.
Time to roll....
-
another pit stop on top of the California coastal range
-
.
-
If you have put those floor board extenders on your bike (or lowered it), take a long hard look at this picture.
-
and remember the "before pic" of Jon's beautiful SEUC? This is the "after" pic.
-
The floorboard bracket (not the floorboard) tapped out on the asphalt and slammed Jon and his bike into the side of the hill.
Believe it or not, he was damn fortunate.....just a few scrapes, bumps and bruises, he rode this bike a couple hundred miles back home and went to work the next day.
Needles to say, when all the paint is replaced, the floorboard extenders will not be going back on this bike.
When we got to the GTG at Tahoe, I heard about a couple other bad experiences as a result of the floorboard extenders. If you have them and you're riding in the twisties you just can't hang with the pack. Several of us (including Terrie and Susan) had just passed that same curve and non of us came close to scrapping. :nixweiss:
-
Incredable, he messed up all of his lights, every piece of paint and all he got was a little scrape, got on his bike and rode off. :2vrolijk_21:
-
Jock's token pic of this road
-
a fuel stop in Red Bluff and we continue on towards Chester.
Mt. Lassen, a volcano, in the background.
-
We arrived at the Best Western in Chester to find a good size group of CVOs already there.
I Jeff and I went next door and bought up a batch of firewood and started a bon fire.....in short order everybody joined us fireside.
-
Two long hard days on the road, everybody from our group was pretty tired and we didn't last long.
-
Don just took up smoking......in a big way. ;D
-
.
-
getta room you two.
-
:o
-
The next morning, Mon. we made or way down Hwy. 89 south to the host hotel in Stateline, Nev.
I've got to take a break and take my wife to dinner. I'll continue with our ride to Yosemite when ever I make it back to this thread. Here's a sneak preview of that ride.....
-
We left Stateline at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Headed back over Kingsbury Grade and down to Hwy 89 and then to Hwy. 4 and Ebbett's Pass. This is the narrowest of the passess over the Sierra Nevada and also the steepest with many, many switchbacks and twisties.
-
Up near the top there's still a lot of snow on the ground and lakes that are still frozen over.
Remember, two weeks early Terrie and I had drove this road in the car the day after the pass opened. Then it closed the next day due to another snow storm.
-
When we stopped at a gas station down the other side, Nancy grabbed me and hugged me and said "JC, this is the most beautiful road I have ever been on". I think she was pretty much speaking for all of em.
-
as I said, the road gets pretty narrow
-
.
-
.
-
Soon we were headed down the west side of the mountain range
-
We stopped for a visit in Columbia.....one of California's gold mining communities from the 1800s.
-
Where you get your hand made sasparilla. :2vrolijk_21:
-
.
-
.
-
They had a bed for anybody needing a place to stay. :nervous:
-
.
-
.
-
Eventually we roll on into Yosemite. We rode the first ten or fifteen miles in the park and Chip was telling Nancy "this isn't anyting special, looks like all the other places we've been this week". Then we roll around a curve and this was their first view of the Yosemite Valley.
-
That's about where my card filled up and I wasn't able to take any more pictures. We did ride to the top of Glacier Point to view all the falls and the valley floor.
I've been going to Yosemite since being a child 60 years ago and I can never remember seeing the falls flow as hard, fast and strong as they were flowing. Just a couple of years ago I had said that I could never remember them flowing that low (several weren't flowing at all). This year there were falls in places that I'd never seen before.
We pased this 57 Chevy on the Tue of the long ride. Shortened chassis, very interesting.....thought I'd share it with you. Why would somebody do this to a 57?
-
So following our tour guide JC, where he went, we went.
Here are a few pictures.
SBB
And everyone knows this guy!

Don was in charge of the GTG but who was in charge of Don?

California like many other states is having a budget crisis.
I guess deleting trash service in Chinatown was part of the cutback.

Dinner at Fishermans Wharf and then off to Hotel California for the night.
SBB

A few years ago Andy, JC and Jon (Jonga) came to visit us in North Carolina.
We tried to show them some of the sites and area here.
For this GTG, JC told me he was going to make sure Nancy, Jock and I saw as much of California as possible in 10 days.
Mission complete JC!
We want to thank JC and Terrie for stepping up and being there for us!
As I have said, this event was a once in a lifetime event for us.
Damnit JC, we will have to come back to see more!
Check your schedule for 12 or 13.

Nice RR with pictures, looks like u had a great time :P
-
Great pictures and I am so regretting that we didn't hook up with you all in Tahoe. Riding the east side of the Sierra Nevadas was a good ride but wish we could have gotten over the top and made it to Yosemite. Fantastic photos and looking forward to making the trip next year.
-
I really enjoyed every bit of this post. Thanks JC and Chip for all he pics you both took. One day, oh boy would I like to do a trip like that. Great job and I loved it :2vrolijk_21:

Looks like a nice day for a cruise!
-
did I say LARGE?
The forest is so dense in areas you can climb up on one of these and go for a long walk.
-
Your post is still appreciated. Great pictures, hard to pic a favorite, but the falls with the light refracting like a rainbow was very cool.
-
Jock's token pic of this road
For those so inclined, after the Redwoods GTG Ca36 runs from Fortuna to Red Bluff, Ca. (or to Fortuna from Red Bluff and I-5) Need I say it.....it's 140 miles on constant twisties and it will wear you out! :bananarock:
