Do you ride in only Long Pants or will you also ride in Shorts?
Guess I am old school, only ride in long pants

Only in long pants!!!! Was detailing my bike one day in shorts and was putting it away and my leg hit the pipes and that was all it took for me. I don't want to be any where near the pipes when out riding, and the pipes are really hot. [smiley=nervous.gif]

It's only long pants for me. I've considered shorts a couple of times but when I think about sweating on the tank... that's it. ::) I never feel comfortable without my boots and gloves either.
-
Kinda depends on how far I'm going. If I'm just hopping on the bike to run an errand in town, I'll wear whatever I have on, including shorts/sandals/tank top.
But if I'm going out for the specific purpose of riding and will be rolling some miles on, jeans, boots and mesh jacket w/ armor are the order of the day, no matter what the temps are. I do cheat with the gloves, though, and only wear the finger-less type, untill the temps get really cold.
-
Old school. Have never worn shorts. The idea of skin grafting does not appeal to me!!!
-
I've seen a few "idiots" riding around in shorts, mostly they are driving one of those japanese rockets. I saw a guy the other day in shorts, flip flops and a tank top. [smiley=zstupid.gif]
-
I don't think shorts or long pants make you either old school or new wave.
That's no different than saying you can't be a hardcore biker if you don't ride a knuckle, pan or shovel.
Shorts don't make you new wave just as long pants don't make you old school!
So if the question is what do I wear, I have been known to wear shorts.
Not much but sometimes I do.
Just depends on the place, the time, the temperature and how I feel.

Long pants, boots 90% of the time. I have been known to wear shorts if just running short errands around town. I am pretty bad about wearing tank tops most of the time though. Not very protective I know but its what I am comfortable in.
-
Long pants and boots 90% of the time, but cheat on the gloves and usually a WHITE t-shirt HOT here in Arkansas but always wear a helmet, I have considered wearing shorts but the ideal of some stinging insect flying up the leg well that is just too close to LITTLE BUBBA if you know what I mean........

When 'dating' my wife, picked her up on my knuckle chopper to ride to the beach.....tried to get her to go back in and put on some jeans instead of the short shorts......she didn't heed my warning.....ran into a summer hail storm w/ no place to safely pull over and she's got her feet high on the 'frisco-pegs' w/ legs catching that pea-sized hail on inner thighs.... :o..needless to say:
-
I do wear shorts on my way to the beach but rest of the time i ride in jeans.Shorts tend to slip upwards if they are above knee and i hate the way it looks.Kinda looks emberassing.
-
Mostly pants but as others have said I'll jump on it for errands in what ever I'm wearing.

Without exception, long pants, boots, long sleeves, reflective vest, gloves, and helmet when I am on post (Uncle Sam says so). When off post, I'll never tell.
enjoy the ride, Brothers.

Always try for long pants, boots, gloves, full face, long sleeve t-shirt and usually mesh or leather jacket.
Having said that, have you ever been in Memphis in August at a stop light? CHIT!!! In August, for short rides I'll sometimes go to a half helmet, drop the jacket, forget the gloves and wear a ss t-shirt. Am comfortable but feel stupid, [highlight]I knows what be smerter[/highlight].
In fact, leaving Wednesday for the state HOG rally in Bristol, TN, about 500 miles away. Temps are to be around 100 so I just decided to put Bessy and Girty in the trailer and I'll cruise along in the air conditioned cage. In fact, my trailer holds 4 bikes and I'll bet by the time I get there, a couple of friends will have whimped out and joined me.
-
I always ride with gloves, but did not wear them as a passenger unless cold!
-
Jeans and boots. No exceptions. just wouldn't be right. However, I'll ride in a t-shirt with only lifting gloves, or (god forbid)......... I did pick my daughter up at school one day with no shirt on! she was 14... and horrified.... and she still ran to get on the bike! ::)
I don't know why, but the bottom half HAS GOT to be covered right. The rest of it is optional... dunno why i feel that way....

I hope to be at the AHDRA Thunder in the Valley Nationals this Sunday. Would love to ride up to the party tonight and if all goes well the rest of the day will do just that! If not, Saturday is a possibility and Sunday is definite! Look for the V GRL (sideplate)!

Always, always....jeans, riding boots, and deerskin gloves. If I can stand it, at least a mesh jacket, but if it's hot enough, I'll go sleeveless. Won't let the GF get on the bike without at least the same thing on. Me, I could get over, but scraping her up would kill me.
-
Yep, when I see people riding in flip-flops or sandels of any kind, I shudder. Just remembering the times I've been down and the abuse the boots took makes me know that you're gonna sustain a lot of damage to toes/ankles/ and esp. heels w/o good protection. jmho. :o spyder

I believe riders should be permitted to ride with whatever modesty will allow. The government should have nothing to say about it, helmets included, period.
With that said I never ride without jeans or leathers, boots and at least a mesh jacket. I do cheat and use a half helmet in the heat of summer, a FF when it cools down. But that is MY CHOICE.
Every rider has to make the choice for him(her)self. [smiley=soapbox.gif]

Jamie, aren't there enough hazards (deer, elk, speed traps, cell phone talking drivers, rocks on the road, potholes, etc) without adding those must see situations???? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] har! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] spyder

Have a scar on my left calf from the header pipe on my VOR dirtbike while riding in shorts. Never will forget the smell of human flesh cooking on the exhaust pipe (MY FLESH!!!!) Never again. Always long pants (jeans) for me. And if it isn't real hot outside, leather chaps also.
-
I agree with the right to choose. I personally choose to wear boots, long pants, heavy jacket(even in 100 degree temps), and full fingered gloves. I also wear a DOT half helmet and am considering a full face. Wife wears the same. We also wear chaps "most" of the time....yes, even in hot weather.
For those of you that have never been down hard...I used to wear just t-shirt & jeans. Once you've been down, you realize you need as much protection as you can stand to wear.
I've always said ... when riding a motorcycle, it's not "if" you will go down, it's "when" you will go down. I'm not saying it will be the riders fault either...most likely it will be the other person.
just my 2 cents...
-
I agree with the right to choose.

[smiley=kiss2.gif] 30 years in the saddle, long pants and boots only!!!I agree with you guys. No new wave or old school just smart or...
-
40 years in the saddle (and I am 45 years old), and 20 years doing a LOT of motorcycle accidents in my legal practice, and while I am totally PRO-CHOICE for the rider to decide what he or she wears from head to toe, I wear boots, Draggin' Jeans, a MotoGP Mesh Jacket with shoulder, elbow and back armor, full gloves, and a DOT helmet (I have all three styles) EVERY TIME I RIDE except for the quick in-town errands.
SHORTS AND SANDALS are CRAZYYY!!!
I should post some of the pics of some of my cases with shorts and sandals and BEANIE helmets, and you will be cleaning your keyboards!! :(

Every now and again I will don a pair of shorts for a little ride. But the flip flops ,only around the house thats it. Later Q"The Idiot" ;)

Hey Dude, don't candy coat it. Tell us how you really feel.

Hey Big D

Wearing long pants. Never shorts. 3/4 DOT approbed helmet or full face on sport tourers. Full protected wear on sport tourers. Jeans and leather jacket on HD.
Have to confess on some occasions was seen in long sleeved HD T-shirt with leather vest.
To be honest still undecided what to do about absence of knee, elbow and back protection in HD clothes. Some models which have them are too heavy to wear especially during hot summer day. Just bought something like a Chaos jacket with protection - multi layer to be able to wear at any weather - something I think is very useful on long trips.
-
I'm confussed. 35 years ago I would ride in shorts and tennis shoes without batting an eye. My new style is long pants, boots, and gloves (helmet 30%). Which is old school and which is new?
I'm still rethinking the level of protection that is right for me, especially after last week. I went down in a parking lot a week ago today. Thank god I had the chance to learn from a low speed mistake. No big deal luckily. The crashbars on the right took it all. I did chip the bone in my right foot and I'm still using a cane to get around this week. I was wearing boots but they didn't provide enough protection against the weight of an Ultra. Tennis shoes or flip flops would probably mean surgery right now. And I can't buy into the "errand" way of thinking anymore. I didn't know I was going down until it was time to get up off the ground. Just say "car-bam" as fast as you can and that's how it is in reality.
Maybe I'm a wuss, maybe I'm just getting wiser. I don't know,
-
Dang, BG.....sorry to hear you crashed in a parking lot......I assume you collided w/ a car??? Those are quick. Parking lots are scary. Glad you were not hurt worse, but look after that foot, don't wanna let it go South. Getting the scooter fixed yet? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] spyder
-
Thanks Spy. It does happen fast and you never know where.
I didn't hit the car but that's the reason I went down. I'm 99% sure the only bike damage is on the bottom edge of the crash bars but to be honest I haven't really been able to get out there to check it out. As for the foot, they did xrays and it'll heal.
-
Bret,
Sorry to hear of your parking lot misfortune. Glad that your injuries were minimal and you will be back in the wind soon. Take care.

That's just wrong. I remember now several years ago the first time I got noticably sunburned on top of my head. But never had thought before to be concerned about a sunburned tallywacker [smiley=nixweiss.gif] .

Long pants (plus leathers if not too hot) and boots.
