Title: 2013 MODELS: FLHRSE5 CVO™ ROAD KING®
Post by: naitram on August 20, 2012, 07:50:15 PM
Overview

The first factory-installed Road King audio system includes a 200-watt amplifier and an interface module for an included 8GB Apple® iPod® controlled by buttons on the handlebar. The system drives two 5x7-inch speakers with bridged tweeters located on the saddlebag lids, and two 5.25-inch speakers with bridged tweeters mounted in the fairing lowers. The new detachable Vented Wind Splitter windshield was developed by Harley-Davidson and tested in the Wichita State University wind tunnel to relieve low pressure behind the windshield and significantly reduce buffeting at the rider position. A vane within the vent should be adjusted to match air flow to the rider's height. A low-profile console holds a combination speedometer/tachometer with programmable back-light colors.

Other CVO Road King features include a chrome billet-style extended reach heel shifter, Mirror Chrome Agitator Custom wheels, extended saddlebag bottoms with a custom fascia and LED lighting, a new chromed handlebar with an ergonomic bend, and Slipstream Collection hand and foot controls. A new solo touring seat and the removable passenger pillion and backrest have a tuck-and-roll leather insert. A new painting process features hand-finished graphics created with textures and solvents in a multi-step process that results in unique detailing on each motorcycle. Three color options are available, including the 110th anniversary scheme.

A highlight of each 110th Anniversary Edition model are solid bronze fuel tank badges, plated in black nickel and then distressed to highlight the bronze. A bright gold-tone Bar and Shield cloisonné is inserted in the main body of the "single wing" badge while each motorcycle will carry other model-specific anniversary badging, trim and a serialization badge.

Any one have a deposit on one yet?

You can control the Ipod from the handle bars, but can you see what the play list is, or the song?

I am trying hard to decide between the Anniversary color CVO Road King and the Anniversary color CVO Road Glide.

Which ever I get will be a long term bike like my 100 Anniversary Fatboy.  I am keeping my Skunk for my long haul touring bike.

I am wondering the same thing......from the looks of the bars and dash, it appears the IPOD will be a guessing game.

Yeah, it sure is. If you look at the 360 view, it's real clear that it's a nice big windshield vent.

I do!!!   :bananarock: :mango: :orange: :pepper: :pineapple: :cucumber:Is supposed to be at HD any day.  The Blue one is expected Sept 15th.  I think I'm going to go for the Anniv model since only 900 will be made even if the paint is so so.  Looks cool on the web but who knows.  When it comes in I will post some pics for everone.
I love the blue but kinda loud.

Not impressed.  Why would they put lowers on a Road King?  From the pictures the gas tanks look too metric.  Maybe Willie G needs to come out of retirement.. :nixweiss:

Look out guys
7 months back I bought my 2012 ROADKING and I modified it the way it look now.
http://www.harley-davidsonforums.com/forums/touring-general-discussions/46040-roadking-photos-update.html

I guess HD took the idea from me,,,hahahaha
I should file a case against them and get some percentage from their sales this year.
I already mounted the same wheels, added the lower fairing to add the audio speakers, and also the LED light.

Shouldn't I work with them to give them some ideas for 2014 models!!! :cucumber:

I like the black on the engine with the Anniversary paint.  I think it goes well with the lower paint.  Adds a nice contrast to the chrome.

Very nice, looks great.

When I get my Anniversary color CVO King, it will also be sporting a solo seat.

I have been debating weather or not to add the passing lamps to it, seeing yours makes me think I might.

I am first in line with a Deposit on the Anniversary Color Road King at my local dealer.   :bananarock: :coolblue:

I also had a deposit on the Same color CVO road glide but I pulled it and added it to the king.  Was not sure which I wanted when carb info came out so I put a deposit on both.  LOL.

I always thought a King would be what I got after the Fatboy, but a 09 SERG called my name.  Then I traded that for the 12 SERG.  I am keeping the 12 SERG Skunk as I just love long trips on that bike.

However I decided I want a 110th anniversary bike to go with my 100th anniversary bike.

Headed over there today to put deposit on a UCSE, Just can not decide which color Stardust Silver or Tribal Orange, If i knew for sure the Silver matched my PU i would go with it.  :nixweiss:

The SESG is finally starting to grow on me and then HD has to come out with the SERK5 Anny.

Lets see I'd
- remove the tank emblems / replace with a set of SESG emblems
- probably replace gloss black rockers, primary and timing cover with chrome
- .....

Naaa, I'll just hold off for another year. I hope I never bump into one at a dealership. 3 SERKs? Just dumb.

Think I'll hold on to my 08" SERK, but wonder if they would sell me the hand controls. I am currently using a wrist mounted remote control unit and small potentiometer mounted on the side of dash for manual control. Notice small black nob on side of dash. System is 4 Hertz 6X9 speaker in bags alond with 6.5 Hertz speakers in lowers, pushed by an Alpine PDX amp,iPod nano with audio control signal booster. Sounds clear at 80mph with out the shield on. HD can't copy that  :2vrolijk_21:

Just one opinion; passing lamps are practical and helpful.  But the big Harley lamps are disproportionate in place against a Road King nacelle.  Check out Headwinds for some smaller more complementary options that work as well or better and look much better.

One example using Headwinds lamps and brackets, here with the Street Glide style turn signals:

I have been thinking about adding the passing lamps since I put the deposit on the SERK.  Seeing underdogs makes me think about it more.

Funny thing is five months ago I took the passing lamps off my fatboy when I added the 21 front wheel and the Big Road King Nacelle to it.

No, I would not do the street glide fairing.  If you want that, find a left over SESG 2012.

You could do an aftermarket fairing on a SERK, but a standard street glide fairing would be a wiring nightmare. You would also need to think about re-locating the ignition switch to the lower fairing cap location, which brings up a whole new project of what to do with the tank console. Same with the speedo......aftermarket fairing with just a radio and maybe 2 gauges would be the way to go.

The best mod to me would be to  put a color matched ( that you could remove ) Dead Center Fairing with the 6x9s and a tourpac for when touring...makes for a true RoadKing...build it up or strip it down for a night on the town....

I seriously doubt they will have a back rest for the seat, same basic seat with a different cover as was on the 11 and 12 SESG and the 12 SERG.  No back rests for them.

On my 12 SERG I put a corbin with a rider back rest on.  I'm not sure what I will put on the CVO King, but for me, over three hours I want a back rest.

I just put a deposit down on the Anniversary Color RK, 1K over MSRP, and I have to pay shipping, start-up & title.  Not due to arrive until 10.26.12.  I live in the small state of NH, so my HD dealerships are not getting many of these.  My 2nd CVO, 1st Road King!!  Fired00d told me to stay away from paying over, but the game was one by them.  It was that or they were not going to hold it for me.  I did get the 1st oil change & winter storage for no cost.  On another note, another dealership in the area called me back on Weds, they wanted 6K over MSRP and I actually upset the guy, when I laughed for a good 7 secs!!  (My FXDSE has not sold yet)  :bananarock:

WOW!!!! :shocked2: I was just checking out the new parts from the MoCo and they sure think a lot of this new windshield that comes standard on this years SERK...

Wind Splitter Windshield - Road King® Models (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448779920&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302491575&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302491575&locale=en_US&locale=en_US&bmUID=1347054818185&bmLocale=en_US)

Reduce helmet buffeting at speed. The windshield features an exclusive fingertip-adjustable center vent that reduces turbulence behind the windscreen. Then open, the controlled airflow fills the negative pressure area behind the shield, and helps to smooth the flow of air over the top of the screen and around the rider. The revised flow reduces helmet bobbing and neck fatigue. The open vent also provides cooling airflow to the rider at low speeds and in city traffic. Engineered to provide the riding comfort of a larger windshield. The shape keeps the windshield below your site line so you don't look through bugs and road grime, and the detachable design means you can ride without the shield when the mood strikes. The shield is formed of hard-coated polycarbonate for strength and scratch resistance, and the dark-smoked finish reduces glare. The slim polished stainless steel brackets mount to the Original Equipment rubber isolated docking points for ease of installation and removal. Available October 2012.

I don't think so.  The mail slot is in the way and no way to attach it.

I was afraid of that, no way to do a windshield bag.  I have always liked having one, and then the road glide has two glove boxes.  Like to be able to keep gum, or hard candy at my finger tips when doing trips.

Has anyone seen if the iPod hookup has an additional 3.5mm line-in plug? For Zumo audio, etc.

Put a deposit on a blue RK yesterday! Saw one at the local dealer and it was lust at first sight. And it was surprisingly comfortable; stock setups almost never fit my short arse.

Dave, agree with jr on this.  Saw a SERK Blue at SMHD this past weekend and doesn't look like any current bag will fit.  Here's a pic just in case.

I had a chance to sit on the blue SERK this weekend and while the vent/mail slot is pretty large, it's really not in the field of view any more than the bat or shark would be.  I did notice that the windshield was LOW as it hit me about neck high and I'm 5'6.  Didn't notice if it's adjustable or not but it would keep the wind off my chest but my head would be hanging out ('bout what it's good for according to some folks...)

Have a SERK5 coming in early November with my name on it - Anniversary color, MSRP.  Deal is my bike (SERK3 - Cobalt - 29,200 miles, perfect condition)plus $14K OTD (allowing me about 18K for the SERK3).  Would be getting the new frame, 6 gallon tank, ABS, tunes, etc.  Would need to add a tuner, pipes, header,  maybe a seat (w/backrest) at a minimum to the SERK5.  Tough decision - keep thinking I could keep my bike and buy a F800GS adventure scoot, or a Street Bob or a ????  Also concerned that maybe the value of the SERK3 has peaked and now is the time to upgrade.  Help me!

I ended up picking up my  Burgandy SERK5 this last weekend. I got a good deal on my trade so I couldn't pass it up. I took it out for a 130 mile ride.
The IPOD conecition works great. I am using my wifes IPOD until my music is uploaded to the one that came with the bike. I am going to see how the 3.5mm hook up works when I find my MP3 player. The speakers work good to about 50 miles per hour than the wind noise takes over and you can't hear the speakers.  I am going to have to find a way to pipe the music into my helmet.
I like the windshield the mail slot is nice to direct air at me when its hot. I am 5'7" so the windshield seems low but it wasn't a problem.  I also want a windshield bag, I will have to figure out a way to get on on there.
My fuel mileage wasn't bad either 43 mpg running it up the the mountains.
Overall I am very happy with my ride.  :pepper: :orange: :mango: :bananarock: :pineapple:

I did not figure the mail slot / vent would be in the line of vision.  I also figured the shield was really low, that is the current cool trend with touring bikes.

However from what I read, the vent is adjustable and directs air over your head to keep you out of the turbulence, I hope to find out on the demo ride at Bikes Blues and BBQ the end of the month.

2013 CVO RK, LE (#90): Have about 600 miles on it.  I'm 6'2" and the vent adds some cooling air on the hot days, and adjusting it really reduces buffeting, but I miss the silence (with exception of 4in Rines) from my old RK windscreen.  The ipod is loaded with one playlist and you scroll thru the list with the Right grip  audio control.  The seat had to go and it now has a Mustang Super Solo.  It has the extra ponies that my RK was lacking, and I'm waiting on Power Duals, 4in Rine's, and a Racing Tuner to finish the only mods I'm doing to it.  I love the response and handling over my RK, and recommend it to anyone that wants to drop the coin.  I found myself buying a piece of chrome, and identifying three more that I needed to get.  I saw myself building a CVO over the next 5 years, so I cut the trip short, and got a 110ci in the deal.

I was surprisingly satisfied with the clean air behind the windshield, and with the sound from the speakers. Good stuff.

How does the red look in person? Is it a dark burgundy with lighter colors mised?

First thing I thought on seeing one was, the marbled scallops looked like recently dried blood. From the pictures I'd seen, I figured it'd look more gold, but in person it's more of a coppery, hand-textured rich red, especially in the sunlight. If it were a girl, it'd be her:

Looks really wicked...I dig it in a big way.

The demo truck had the red, and the dealer had the blue on the floor; the blue scallops reminded me of Caribbean water. Shimmery blue-green-copper. The blue would be her:

They're both gorgeous. Most of the CVO paint schemes of recent years I could take or leave. Nice, but not breathtaking. The MoCo hit it out of the park with the Road Kings this year.

I have a deposit on an Anniversary CVO RK that's being delivered in November, but I'm very seriously considering calling up and asking them to find me a red. The 110th badges are cool, but I was drooling over that ginger bitch.

I bought the SERK5 Anniversary on 9/18/12. I paid MSRP. I've ridden 3500 miles on it and love the performance and the Anniversary colors. I don't like the mailbox windshield because the wind gets directed to flow across my ears and even with a full helmet the noise is so loud that the bike speakers are useless over 30 mph. I will probably put the windshield from my '05 RK on it.

I added matching highway pegs. It should have come with those. My Garmin Zumo mount cable fit well under the dashboard. With a HOG Tunes 1 meter male-male cable, I connected the audio to the spare input to the speaker system, but I don't like closing the cable in the saddlebag lid. The right audio selector pushes in to switch between the iPod and the GPS audio. XM sound works well through my Zumo 665. I mounted the XM puck on the front brake reserve so I get good reception.

I had a rock or something put a hole in my headlight and spidered the lens glass. That was a warning to me to add the Harley Passing lamps. The stock headlight does a poor job of illuminating the road at night. I've got full LEDs on my '05, including the Kisan modulator programmed for a LED headlight. Those LEDs will be on the SERK5 by Spring. I also want to get the cruiser style turn signals off the handlebars and back under the passing lamps as a RK should have. I'll probably also add fog/driving lamps, but not the Harley ones that mount on the crash bar.

SGME/JR1000,
The spots make the bikes look completely different.  I'm thinking about getting the clear Ventilator Windscreen, adding the spots, and going towards that traditional Road King look, but the lowers may look odd with all that.  I do like the OEM windscreen for the summer, but as it gets colder, I want something that limits more of the wind.  The OEM is too small.

It is good to know that I'm not the only one that can't just buy something and leave it alone.  Always have to change it.

I used that kit on my misses 07 RKC.

What I dont like is the turn signal wire wraps behind the fork on the outside of the nacell and then enters the nacell from the rear.

When sitting on the bike you can see the wire wrapping around the nacell.  It does not look clean at all.

The only way to modify that would be to drill a hole in the nacell behind the turn signal mounting bracket, except the windshield bracket is in the way.

Im stopping by the dealer tomarrow, I will get a pic if her bike hasnt sold.

I just added the Arlen Ness Bob Dron sport shield. Modified the brackets to be quick disconnect and just finished an 1 1/2 hour ride in 48 degree weather. The Dron fairing was just the ticket for me. No electric gear but have a Scorpion Hat trick jacket, good gloves and chaps. Going to do it again before it just gets to frigging cold. It will then be muffler coring time using fullsac replacements and also painting the fairing to match when there is less riding time.

BTW, that is a photoshop red fairing, It's still black right now.

Question on the Ipods that come with these.  Are they still the little square Nano touches or did they go with the new nano touch that is now rectangular now?

Square 8gb Nano. i have an itouch that i am using instead. gave the nano to my son. the fairing works really well, I do wish it was a few inches taller but i don't have enough miles on it to know for sure it i want to make the shield taller.

overall i love this the bike. My best ride yet!

Sort of figured they were still using the old out of date square nano touch.  That is what I came with my CVO Road Glide, so I guess I will have two of them now and my 32g touch.

Should be taking delivery of my King Nov 7th or so.

When did you pick it up?  Real curious as mine was delivered to the dealer Thursday, 162/900.  I pick mine up this wednesday as I am still off shore at work right now.

This will be my first RK also, but my 3rd CVO.  All my touring bikes have been Road Glides, and I am keeping my 12 CVO road glide.
I picked it up Saturday!  I have no clue when it was delivered, as the dealer didn't email me with the VIN when it shipped. Wow are #'s are close!!  (Does MoCo skip # 666?)  I did find out when I called MoCo about the gold key that, there are no gold keys, they are sending out commerative CVO gold coin.

What size bars are those?  I am trying to find a comfort zone, and don't know where to start?

Picked up AE #278 yesterday.  Long two month wait but it was worth it. Rear crash bars, 4 point dock kit and luggage rack installed at dealer and then long 5 hour drive home with it in the back of the truck. Put about 20 miles on today, enough to realize the windscreen has to go. Love the bike! :cucumber:

Rode mine home Wednesday the 56 miles.  The next day put 250 more on her, then Friday another 200 or so.  Then to Savannah and back over the week end, for 1500 plus miles in the first four days of ownership.

I  to love the bike.  Not sure on the windshield, love the looks but it is a lot of wind.

Mine is 162.

My big red should be ready for pickup tomorrow! I'm psyched...never spent so much effort trying to find a Harley.

Think I'll name her "Serefina".

The weather starting to turn a bit up here, but you should be able to log many miles on her in sunny St. Augustine.  Have a great time, and be safe.

Rear Crash Bars? I thought about that too, but it seemed to take some of the CVO build look from the bike. But those bars sure would protect against the inevitable dump when the bags would be damaged without the rear crash bars. Crash bars would also protect against pipe damage.

I wanted the rear crash bars for that reason, but there is no place to put the bags that hold the drink containers without them. Being in Florida means you need plenty of hydration in the summer, so we have found that carrying a couple thermos brand bottles in the crash bar drink holders provides a good means of accomplishing that.

I've got a stainless insulated drink holder for which I used on my old bike with the Kuryakyn universal drink holder on my throttle handgrip clamp. It's another thing sticking up off the handlebars, but quite functional. I bought the Kuryakyn leather pouch drink holder with handlebar mount and hope to mount it less obtrusively. I'll end up with the rear crash bars as soon as I stop detailing the bike each time I stop at a dealer.

I agree about the functionality of the saddle bag guards (rear crash bars).  I just can not bring my self to ruining the clean looks with out them.  Have considered it on both the CVO road glides and this bike.  But in the end, looks win out for me.

Brought her home yesterday! Only mod I had done on delivery was to lower her front and back with Progressives. At 5'6", I need all the help I can get. Considering some pullback risers and maybe the "comfort profile" rear crash bars (it occurs to me the bags would be REALLY pricey to fix/replace), and moving the front turns to the forks. Other than that and wiring up my Zumo, shes staying as-is.

Sharp bike.  I too am looking at getting the turns off the handle bars.

That Red is extremely sharp. The turn signals off of the bars does sound like a good looking mod.  Is this something that you would do yourself, or have the dealership do it?

Can I ask how much you lowered with the Progressive monotubes?  Estimate of the cost?  Thinking of lowering 1" over the winter on mine.  Thanks.

I went with the monotubes in the front and 412s in the back. Lowered about 3/4" in back and about 1" up front (I believe, might be wrong about that). The CVO RK already has the lowered HD suspension, so Progressives were the easiest way to go lower. Don't recall the cost. Want to say it was in the neighborhood of $500.

I'm looking at P/N 69577-06, which are the FLHRS-style turns. I always liked the RK Custom's look.

That is one of the options I am considering to get the signals off the bars.
