Just read a PM from one of the guys who had also installed the Harmon Kardon radio in an 05 bike. Since the question applies to a half dozen or so of us that I know of will answer here for the benefit of the rest of the crowd.
Was asked if the latest software update (v8.9) currently available on Harley's website can be loaded "without messing up whatever software change was done to the radio to make it work in the older bikes?"
Yes, you can. The (actually very small) change that was done rewrote some of the radio's firmware. The software changes available won't touch that area of the radio's programming. I've had the v8.9 update on my bike since just a few days after the update was released. Loading instructions are exactly the same and the benefits gained from the new software are the same as well.
