Title: Maggie Valley 2006
Post by: JR on October 12, 2006, 04:18:24 PM
Hey Ya'll,

Wanted to post some pics I took so far. Came in on Sunday with Brian and hung out here since my buddy who started out with me hit a deer and was hospitalized. This is first time here and it's been awesome! Big Brian made it in from CA along with others from the east. I will be trying to get more pics tonight. God Bless!

Here's a few pics that Suzanne took with her camera...some riding and some hanging out around JCI.  I had a low rear tire on my bike when I pulled it out Friday AM, so did not get to do the Friday ride  :(  Jock was kind enough to let me use his portable compressor to air the tire up enough to get to Ghost Town HD in Waynesville...the owner of the dealership went out of his way to accomodate me by plugging the tire and calling ahead to Asheville to get us lined up for  a new tire since they did not have one in stock.  Long story short...we wound up riding back from Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so all was not lost.  When you get a lemon, just make lemonade!!   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  We really hated to miss the Dragon, but there was no way to catch up with the group, as we did not get back on the road until after 1:00 PM.  Also included here are a few photos Suzanne took while riding sweep Thursday in our small second group.  I haven't downloaded all the photos from my camera yet as it will take a while to do that since there are a couple of hundred of them.  Meanwhile, hope you enjoy these!

The weather was great, and the scenery was beautiful.  Really couldn't have asked for a better week!!

Next several are our group on the dragon.  I'd gone down ahead a couple of miles to find a place to get as many as could be captured.  Unfortunately (and I apologize) wasn't able to get everyone individually.  We were bunched up tight enough in some places that the camera couldn't shoot fast enough to catch it all.

These will be low res images here just for viewing.  In a day or two I'll get the high res images cleaned up and placed in the galler in case anyone finds anything they'd like to download.

So..... down The Dragon we go......

At the end of the Wheels Through Time Museum tour we staged all the CVO bikes (that we could find) for what is likely a photo of the largest collection of CVO bikes in one place that has ever been taken.  This was fun/interesting/rabbit herding to put together but everyone seemed to get a kick out of it.

Again, low res images here.  High res images in the Gallery later.  This is one random selection of the group photo followed by groups of us in front of the groups of bikes for those that want to capture themselves now.

This will likely end up being my favorite of everything taken.  We were losing light toward the end so it's certainly not my favority for photographic quality.  This, however, is the group we could round up at the time that were at both Cripple Creek and Maggie Valley.  The photo only captures 10 of us.  There were actually 13 that were at Maggie Valley who were also at Cripple Creek.

That's roughly 1/4 of all Cripple Creek attendees and over 10% of the Maggie Valley attendees.  Given that this is not a small country we live in and made its way across to enjoy these Gatherings this is no insignificant thing.  So to everyone in the pic and those we missed; thanks guys.  It was great to see you again; and it will be again next time too.

Many of these group photos were taken for us by Neal's brother Steve.  Anything you see shot from this higher perspective was done when I handed the camera up to Steve who had climbed up a high and cold rock.  He kept his derrier on that cold rock shooting pics for us for close to an hour.  We all owe Steve (and his rear end) a major thank you for service above and beyond the call of duty here.  Thanks Steve!

I have an idea!

And no it's not original.

Heard it from a good friend that heard it from Andy.

How about the man on the right in the picture below as CVO site chaplain!

How many "Amens" do we hear on that?

I thought we all pretty much inducted him as that!!  At least that was the consensus by Barry and myself!!

All in favor?  AMEN!  (So be it!)

JR's ride warming up early Sunday morning.
This pic was funny to me.  I had gotten up and had a shower, but my Under Armer shirt was on my bike.  So I had come out and saw the 1/8th inch of frost on the seats of our bikes so threw a towel over them.  You can see the towels on our seats?   I am so sorry I was not dressed and ready to come out and wave goodbye, but everyone knows that the hugs were still sent out .......... mentally ........... virtually.......... you know you were in the thoughts of folks still sleeping/ getting ready / already gone.  It was just such an awesome experience.  Here I am - bone tired, and still looking to see what someone else can say about this gathering.  I was at work today. Can't honestly say I worked today.  Mind is still trying to grapple all the conversations, body languages, laughter, genuine caring for fellow cvo riders.  An experience that will not soon be topped.  The scenery is provided, not by man, but man pointed us in the direction of the routes to best view it.  Great!  Great!  Fantastic!  Neal, looking forward to the pic you took of the fairing of my bike with the frost on it.  I took only a couple of pictures all week with my camera.  My mind has millions.

Junkman and Junkmom just wanted to say that we had a great time in Maggie Valley!  Thanks to everyone who had a hand in orgaizing it!  We had a blast with everyone we rode with, especially Harry, Michelle, Jorge, Squirrel, Bill and Deb, and the Gettin Old couple.  It was nice to meet all of you!  Thanks for inviting us, Dave!  What awesone scenery! The 11-12 hour trip was well worth the while!  We hope to be on the site more and will be looking forward to trips planned next year!  Thanks to everyone who is sharing thier pictures on line.

Thanks Q.  Enjoyed the hell out of meeting you too.  The best thing about these events is the riding; the riding that is right after meeting everyone and finally getting say hello and shake hands face to face and shoot the breeze for hours around the hotel parking lot.

Was glad we had the chance to say at least a few good byes that frosty morning.  I remember Rainman and Roy and a couple of others out there too.  But it was a pretty quiet parking lot just before dawn that morning.

In the gallery section you'll now find a collection of images that show the construction of the CVO bikes group photo.  Grabbed several that show what we did all the way from Scot putting his toe in the dirt to mark the frame for the camera to all 47 bikes proudly standing together.

These are the higher res images so are a bit large (for your viewing pleasure).  Check out the gallery section here: http://flhrsei.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=28115 .  The CVO group bike photos begin with the several images starting at img_3709 .

The several photos of the groups of friends standing in front of the group of bikes will be up perhaps tomorrow evening.

Went ahead and uploaded all the imagery for individuals or groups of friends standing in front of the CVO bikes group.  Starting at file img_3745 in the gallery here:  http://flhrsei.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=28115

There are LOTS of photos of the people so I resized them all down to 1024x768 for uploading.  That's still a decent size for screen use.  However, if anyone wants the higher res version of any particular image just PM me with your email address and the filename and I'll send it to you.

Barry, We told you in person,  not only do you have a most gorgeous HD ride there -------------- ya gotta back it up with the white shot gun.   ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

We so enjoyed both of your companies this last week. and we got our fair share.  It was so fabulous to meet a man who has such a close relationship with his children.  What a blessed time you both had that she was out of school at the same time you had a trip planned and was looking for company.  I bet that this trip will be etched in the memories of both of you for a life time.  I can almost hear the rumble of the pipes of the man she marries falling in behind Mom and Dad for the CVO Rider Ralley 2011.  Anyone else hear that same rumble?
Barry, it was such a pleasure to meet you and your daughter.  We are both early risers and we both like to talk to our maker in the quiet of the morn.    ;)

It's called, learning how to use a new lens...the hood was not on right in those photos...not snapped into position.  Fortunately, I figured that out quickly and the group photos don't have that operator error....

I always shoot with a lens hood to keep glare off the lens which desaturates the photo and makes it look "washed out"...This lens has a "flower petal" type hood, and if it's not put on in the correct position and locked in place, it shows up in the photo, espeically at the 18mm setting (25mm for 35mm equivalent).  There's a certain position it must be in before rotating it into place with a click...I know better, but am not accustomed to that type of lens hood.   [smiley=oops.gif] [smiley=oops.gif]

Just sent off two cd's full of pictures of the MV event to Twolane.
I believe he is going to put together a photo album that all can get or post them in the gallery. So if you didnt get many pics, not to worry, I took a ton just for that reason.

I also wanted to thank twolane for for all his time he puts in for this site. If you ever did patches, pins, or shirts you would all know how much time it really does take. We all thank Brain also for all time he spent putting this togethter...I will never forget this trip!

And a special thank you to Don "Twolane" for the event pin...that was very gracious of you to give them away to all...once again your time and money given without a second thought...

Thanks to all for such a great time!

You can predict the length/severity of the upcoming winter
by the amount of berries they produce.

Hey Bungee,

You don't need no stinkin' berry tree to predict the winter, man it is going ot be a cold long winter no matter how you measure it up there [smiley=hat.gif]

Actually you might be surprised at the mildness of some of our winters, last year it didn't get much below -10C (14F) for more than a week or so. No snow 'till almost x-mas too.

This year they're predicting mild w/ more snow - perfect for sleddin'! Usually we get less than a foot all winter.

Don't get me wrong however, some winters are colder than a whores heart, -30 for weeks on end!

That's what I was thinking, and perhaps this expedition up the hill and into the woods wasn't for a better camera angle? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] ;D

We enjoyed riding with the outcasts of group 2 that day. It was worth it to make the detour to the waterfall. Nice pic that porthole took. Sorry you lost your glasses there.
Kathy has been after me to go to a Bristol race for 19 years. I don't know if I told you that back in the 80's I worked for Luck Stone racing on saturdays and for Melling racing on Sundays. Of all the tracks Bristol is definately the best [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]Definately looking foreward to riding with you again, this time with a new clutch.

Some of you my recall my little adventure I had coming down the Dragon on Monday night. 2 inches of rain and 106 mph winds.

The next day I took a ride up to see just how bad it was and to check road conditions for the bike.

BTW, I had so much fun I did it 5 times?

3rd trip had me following this guy. Must have been a local, I kept up with him but he was cranking up the hill. I was in my truck, using the 4wd too. Every left turn he took like this, sometimes well before the turn.

One of the trees I moved on Monday night. You don't move the trees off the road, just out of the way for one lane.

All the downed trees were cut up by noon the next day. Locals told me it is usually guys in pickups that move them then the county comes and cuts them up. They let nature take care of the leaves though, that is why I used the truck.

Look where this tree is cracked, that is indicative of hurricane force winds.

Water pipe I went over or under many times. Right after I went under it here I took a switchback and immediately went over it. Was kind of cool. You have to get off the main roads sometimes!
Never did figure out were the water came from, but it ends up at the substation on the river.

The only way my wife got to see the Dragon at Deals Gap on the bike (it is in the background here).
She did get to do my "terror" ride during Monday's storm so I got her a "I survived the Dragon" t-shirt.
I think she earned it.

Since I left Maggie Valley, I was home only one day and once I return home next week I will share my own photos.  Of course they will not compare to the professional shots here, however there may be a different one or two to share.

Hi Bill,
It all came out fantastic!! I got a lot of footage, and just 2 days ago the ability to transfer it to digital format with zero loss of quality. I have to learn the program and all of it's features to make a great DVD with tunes. My only issue that I have yet to overcome is the placement of the mic. One would think it would be a nothing-nothing to move it, but the manufactor of the remote cam lens didn't make it an easy thing to accomplish. My goal is to place it behind the windshield so that my exhaust doesn't overcome the mic, and what the ears hear is what the mic will hear.
Glenn and I have put in a lot of effort into this and have come along way from JR'S camcorder taped to his helmet pic!!
Soon I'll be able to discuss with Neal how I can post up the video for the site, or how to link it for veiwing. (I'm a little slow on this chit).
I will say that the footage of the (Dragon) you don't want to be chitfaced and watch it without a pail !!
I've been having some strange times since getting back from the Valley- with a lot of problems going on- like my generator frying my house with mega voltage- no fires but- I've been repairing chit like you can't believe, so not much time left over from that and working.

BY LOOKING AT THE ANGLE OF THE VIDEO, ID SAY YOU WERE SHOOTING SKY SHOTS OR MAYBE YOU WERE JUST SET UP FOR VIDEOING GROVER DOING HIS SEEG WHEEL STANDS. ALSO I HAVE AN EXTRA TRI-POD IF YOU WANT TO TRY THAT [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

It would appear that way by the way I was sitting on the bike. But when I ride aggressive I will lean forward and then tilt head forward to compensate for the size of camera vs the wind resistance to get correct positioning of filming! It was thru extensive testing and many vigorous test runs that I positioned the camera in the precise area of this helmet to get great filming and more important, to keep from snapping my neck off!. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Also found it was a lot easier to tilt head forward than to change out duck tape!!! ;D [smiley=banana.gif] ;D [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I couldn't believe how fast I got my ZeePhoto CD.  It was like 2 or 3 days.  When I ordered from killboy last fall, it took 2 or 3 weeks. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yea, I have some more....trying to figure out the whole Gallery thing and how to efficiently load them.

Candy, These are shot in RGB and not sRGB, so monitors may vary in how they display the colors/brightness, etc.  Please feel free to alter them in whatever way you want.

I'll try some more tonight...

It has been for several years, this year 103thunder announced it was his last one for awhile as the event organizer, we are looking for volunteers to pick it up, so no current plan that I know of.

There sure are, you can check them from the HOME page and go to Events CVO, here's the link:

http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=event_CVO

And the next major event is in Nelson BC July 16 to 20 it is here: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1152457363

Finally, there is a "for no good reason" get together started with the SEEG guys here: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1161319113

And the Nelson and for no good reason get togethers are going to be soooooo much funnnnnnn!  Start your planning now.....................    ;)

Thanks for the reply! Maybe one day down the road I can pick it up. I plan on retiring in the Ashville area in about 10 years. Until then, I'll have to be a guest. I hope it gets picked up again though. It's a great area of the country and lots of great roads (NC, TN and SC). I'll keep an eye out and hopefully get to meet some of you there next Oct. Hoist!

Thanks so much for this link. MV was a seminal event in my life. Take far too many words than what I'm comfortable with posting here to explain why, but I found something in that place and left something of myself as well.Reading about the history of The Dragon was just another piece of that.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks to Mrs We, I think I've figured this out.  My buddy Lou and I overlooking the beauty of the BRP (I think?).  This is what it is all about.

Of course, getting to see everyone else's bikes inspired me to buy more chrome!  This is thanks to Big B (Spiderman), chrome eagle head horn cover with LED and matching eagle talon kickstand.  One screamin' eagle!

The place - the time - the people

It was and is a location that will stay in our hearts and minds for many, many years to come.  Pete great pics.  I remember the set up of the hugging of the witch on the bike at the HD shop.

I can not be sorry for one second that I was on my bike riding with great folks in the midst of great scenary, and I would not trade one word shared with others but I do wish my time could have been sliced and diced a bit more so I could have talked to more folks.

I feel in reflextion that I must have been just standing still, removed as if floating above the group, staring in silent amazement at seeing so many people at one time, even though I know I was constantly engaged with sharing all the time.  I loved meeting everyone I got to meet and if we only exchanged a glance, a wink, a smile, I hope you all know that you have made a huge impact on me and my husband.  We will never be quite the same again.   :D And this IS A GOOD thing.

He is explaining that to his wife now, I'll let you know what he tells her!  For me, it is what "goes on in MV stays in MV"

God Bless!
