Just relating a conversation I had earlier today. The 05 police bikes are equipped with ABS but I was wondering why the brake fluid spec had changed to DOT 4 on all touring models. Obviously you can't use DOT 5 with an ABS system but that didn't explain the other 99% of the bikes and it seemed odd to change them all for the very few that did have ABS.
The local service manager had told me last week he had a tech off to "brake school" for "something" on the 05s. So now that he's back I asked why DOT 4 was the spec on the 05 touring bikes even though they didn't have ABS. The answer was the interesting part.
Though he couldn't document it with a part number he said that after the first of the year sometime there's going to be a Screamin' Eagle kit to add ABS to the 05s. Had no idea as to cost nor any other information. Just that they'd been trained on the ABS system and told while there that there would be a retrofit kit for 05s without. He said he was told they'd work only on the 05s. I can't think of any other difference other than the DOT5 fluid on the earlier models. But at least the possibility is interesting.

Abs is an option only on police bike at the present time. Would think that retro fitting abs to a bike would be a night mare not to mention very spendy. Am told that the unit takes up a quarted of the right saddlebag (alot of space to give up). Has a sensor on the left front wheel and the rear wheel.

I was wondering just how small the pump and control systems could be and how much storage space would be lost. A buddy with an ABS Wing and I have swapped rides a few times and it's "fun" to try to lock the wheels up and see how different it feels. Strange actually.
I would have no intention of making the change at either what I expect the financial cost would be or at the cost of a lost saddlebag. Did, however, think the idea of a retrofit kit for ABS was interesting.

It's ashame is is so big, as the BMW ABS module is about the size of a paper back if I remember correctly.
