Title: 2014 bars??
Post by: Bigfoot16 on June 20, 2014, 11:37:38 AM
Okay gang, I need advice please. I need to put some mini apes on my bike, 10" or 12". I'm noticing the selection is limited. Can anyone recommend a brand or dealer or any advice?  Thanks

Finally got my Wild One 578 bars put on yesterday. After trying to get several independent shops to do it, neither keeping appointment schedule, decided to do it myself with the help of a few friends. Took about 3 hours. I used the Namz NHCX-J12 wire extensions. They are true plug and play and made the job much easier.
Really like the way they feel. I'm 5' 10" and now feel like I'm sitting upright with my arms relaxed.

The 578's are 10". They come to the top edge for the fairing. There are pictures in this tread. I'll try to post pictures this evening. Dealer wanted $500 to install. If you can turn a wrench it's not hard to do. You need the help of a friend or two to hold parts out of the way.

Okay, I'm still getting mixed information from my local shops.  Last year I put 12" bars on my CVO and was able to use my stock cables and wires.  I want to do the same on the new bike but have had a few people say I need new cables and a few say they are the same as last year and will not need new ones.  Can anyone help with this?  Thanks

I did not put cables on my 14 CVO. I did get the Namz wire extensions ($35) to make it easier. I cut the 2 zip ties off the cables to give them room to move. No tightness or binding.

I have the 578s on a Street Glide and I love them!  I was able to utilize stock brake and electronics, but I had to get a longer clutch cable.  I went with a 4" over stock, and it was perfect.  This was on a non-cvo, so it was a cable, not hydraulic clutch.

Bigfoot, what bars are on your pic above?  Maybe I missed it but they look a couple of inches taller than WO 578's.  Does the grip width of the WO578 bother anyone particularly in slow turns?

I went with the 577's, 12.5" bars.  I have a 37" sleeve length, so the width fits me really well.

Thanks, I have KW 2+2's on an older Limited and probably looking at 578's when I upgrade rides.  Want to keep hands behind fairing.  I too have a long sleeve length so can handle the wide bars in slow turns but do notice it in full lock parking.  Specs on 578's look to be about an inch wider on each side than my 2+2's and maybe an inch taller.  The KW 2+2 bar shape does not fit the inner fairing as well as the WO bars and are smaller so difficult to inner wire.

I really like the short chrome trim piece on the side of the front fender. Did you install? If so, please post the part number if you don't mind. I have a Ultra Limited and would love replacing the word "Limited" with that trim piece. Much cleaner. Thank you

Thank you! Did you install the bar? or did it come on your bike. Again, thank you.

It comes on HDI bikes as standard, Scott.

I just bought a 2014 Ultra Limited CVO. Hate the stock Bars. I had 575s on my 2011 Ultra Classic CVO and loved them. Unfortunately they (the 575s) don't fit the 2014. So I am forced to get the 578s. Don't really care for apes but they are the closest to the 575s. I wonder if I pull the bars back towards me if they will be closer to the 575s. What I mean by that is if you look at the schematic that shows all the bagger bars in that picture it looks as though if you roll the bars back at the rider it looks as though it would end up in the same spot as the 575s. Any thoughts on that. Really need input before shelling out money for something I wont like. :-\

There is some adjust-ability in the 578's, they can be moved forward and back a bit. I think they are very, very comfortable, you don't notice the added width and no pull on the shoulder blades. Hands are still below the fairing. These "look" like they belong on the bike.

I was in the same position as you - I went with the HD pullback bars which are a lot more comfortable.  I still think the 575s could fit though...  I think your problem in pulling back the 578s will be there can't be much movement before they hit the tank on lock.

PS: Changing the bars on a '14 is an awful lot quicker and easier than on earlier years!!

Did you put the HD 2 inch pullbacks on? Did you need any cables or changes or extensions, I'm going in next week to replace the front end and I might have them put on pullbacks when I'm in there. They didn't seem to know if they needed any extra parts or if the 2 inch pullbacks would even fit. The website says the HD 2 inch pullbacks won't fit the Limited CVO. Please advise!

Yup, the HD 2" pullbacks Bill.  Absolutely NO extra parts needed under any circumstances.   The reason the website says they won't fit is because they don't fit into the "channels" where the stock bars sit on the inner fairing, but you just keep them a little further back from the inner fairing and they are fine. Good thread with pics here: http://www.hdforums.com/forum/new-rushmore-models/941239-installing-2-pullback-bars-flhtk-pics-included.html

Thanks, dealer told me since they have it apart for replacing the scratched front legs (warranty work) that they would only charge me 1 to 1 1/2 hr labor. I think that is fair. Thanks again for your help.

My 578's came in Friday. My local dealer says you must change hydraulic lines to longer ones to avoid lines that would be to short on 10 inch apes, and to avoid kinking which would cause possible brake failure. Also wiring extensions. They want to charge me 6 hours labor for the job and 300 for the parts. Looking at the posts on this site it looks as though they are trying to rip me off. Does this sound right?

Absolutely not, the hydraulic lines DO NOT have to be changed, take it somewhere else to have it done.
Wiring, it can be done but it's much easier to do the job with the short wiring extensions.
