My taillight went out on my way to work this morning. Before I make the 60-mile trek in nasty (dangerous)Washington, DC holiday traffic to the house, can anyone give me some pointers to track down the problem and hopefully a simple fix? Such as, if there is a fuse I can visually check / location? I don't recall seeing any when I replaced the seat a few months ago.
I plan to head out during lunch and pop the seat off and see what I can see and trace the wiring the best I can. I have everything (manual, meter etc) I need at home, but I'm kind of limited to my eyes and Leatherman. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Hopefully these idiots understand arm signals and don't run over me because it will be stop and go all the way home. On the bright side, the speed will be slow.

I got my first look at it during lunch. All the fuses and connection look good. I'll brave the ride and break out the multi-meter when I get home. I have a bad feeling it's the LED taillight. Sticking my tongue to the rear most connector was not an option, so I'm assuming it's getting power as the turn signals are working and license plate light.

I thought mine had gone out because when I applied the rear brake it didn't get brighter, Mine turned out to be the brake switch located by the pedal. Only $20 repair.
If you don't have any power to the light them this is not it.

I popped the tail light out and measured the voltage, which was good. Tested the led tail light direct to a battery, which was bad.
$250 at my dealer ... a little steep if you ask me. Just pulled the trigger on an after market copy for $89. We'll see if it is any good.
Just and fyi:
Connector pins as facing the rearof the bike
Left most pin = ground
2nd pin = 12v with brake applied
Pins 3&4 = 12v (pin 3 not used on tail light assemby)

Been there done that. Got one on Amazon.com.
Piece of CRAP. The wire leading down into the unit is
not protected from Water.
Worst of all the illumination was Very Poor, think about that !
(when repl with fact. unit, diff was dramatic)
Luckily my purchase had an LED imperfection and sent it back.
That was a whole story in itself, but Amazon protection worked.
Mine was Not DOT or SAE approved, think about that as well.
Shopped the part with H-D discount dlrs and $172 got it del.
(shop just the bulb/light repl. not the whole pkg)
Based on the part # this is the 3rd try for H-D.

The LED board plug pulls loose from the circuit board. Fixed mine. Common problem

Carefully extract the outer lens from the unit and it's a fairly easy soldering fix ( once the unit is out of the bike !)
I've done both mine and a mates 2008 FXSTSSE2 and they're holding up well
