2015 RG Ultra CVO extra weight?
« on: February 11, 2015, 06:00:47 PM »

My 2015 RG CVO Ultra is due to be delivered next week (carbon dust/autumn sunset). Wahoo! I have not been able to test ride one so I am hoping it rides as good as they say. I am a little concerned about the extra weight. I have had 6 Harleys and the last two have been ultras. On occasion, when my wife and I pack heavy for a cross country trip (which we do often) the bike is heavy enough to make my butt pucker a time or two when stopped or at parking lot speeds. Does anyone know if the extra pounds are down low on the frame or where? Is it in the 110 engine or what? I may need to get my lazy butt to the gym :-)

Not much different weight  from the Ultra. The weight of the stereo is not directly on the bars though. Makes life a little easier.

What?  Are you trying to claim a 949 pound bike is heavy?  I traded a 2009 SERG3 for the RGU. it is definitely heavier when parked but very well balanced.   If you have to ask whether or not you should hit the gym, the answer is no doubt yes!   :coolblue:

Well it is quite a bit heavier than the 12 SERG I traded for it, even when the chopped tour pack and lowers were on the 12.

It is not more difficult to ride at slow, parking lot speeds than my 12 SERG was or my 13 SERK is.  Still able to ride the MSF course box on the bike, or due a u-turn on a two lane road with out putting a foot down.

Gidday Sneezy,

Cool handle, I am guessing you have 6 brothers and are short. If so you should be happy as changes target smaller rides so they say.

I just changed from an 11 SERGU to a 15 SERGU. Handling without any great load is way better IMHO as weight is better distributed. ie heavier front forks, amplifier moved from under top box to fairing and lower top box (same or more capacity so they say). This should all add up to better behaviour when touring and packed up like the Beverley Hillbillies. Will test this theory and let you know in a couple weeks when we load up and head down to Floridah!

Best bet is stop only when you have to and stay out of parking lots and gyms! Elsewise practice your low speed and tight spaces stuff where it is safe and get used to the new ride before you load up.

I am sure you will love it.

Cheers

Well I took delivery today and I got to answer my own question (or actually confirm what some of you told me). The 2015 Road Glide Ultra is one sweet riding machine. I came off of a 2010 FLHTCU which I was very pleased with but I am absolutely amazed at how well this thing rides down the highway and also in the parking lot. The weight is situated so well it is a non issue.  I was struggling with the $40k decision but thanks to the info provided on this site I believe I just made the best motorcycle purchase decision anyone could ever make.
 I am lovin this ride!

Glad you're happy with it. Jealous that you got to ride it today. Had -2F temps when I left for work and it was windy as hell up here.

Congratulations!  The Carbon Dust / Autumn Sunset looks great in the sun.    :2vrolijk_21:

Come to think of it, that bike does look over weight.  You'd better hit the gym!

Looks nice!  Now let the modifications begin.  Reflectors should be first to go.

Great bikes, have just over 8K on mine.

Congratulations on your new ride sneezy!!  I know how you feel and it just keeps getting better... almost to the point where it's kind of depressing when my ride is over.  ;D

As promised I am now roaming around Floridah with a fair load on  board. All good no dramas and i am very impressed with how well Lucille goes with a 'full stomach' so to speak. Had a 10 mile detour over dirt today because of a wreck and while not my preferred surface I did not require a change of underwear afterwards as I probably would have on my 11.

LOL. I am glad to here it. What part of Fla are you riding thru? I hope the weather is a bit nicer than we have had. We have had snow, ice and rain just about every day since I picked my bike up. I did manage to squeeze in a ride Saturday. Lovin the RG. I don't think there could be a better ride. I have a business trip next week to northern Alabama so I am planning to ride up the Natchez trace up to Muscle Shoals  and maybe pop into Tenn.  a bit before my meeting.
Take care.

Sneezy, check road reports prior to riding into TN.  We are predicted to have another ice/snow headed this way Thursday.  If we get some warm days early next week it will melt pretty quick.

Good call TN when we left LA it was freezing until we hit the end of the panhandle bit thingy. We are somewhere in the middle heading towards key west which we will be at tomorrow night Sneezy. We will head to Daytona on fri 6th? Very warm down here.

I did not see anyone comment on this so decided I should. The only thing I would caution you about is the handle bars. Although so much better for riding, because they are a lot closer to the bike than my 2011's were I have noticed that there is no where near the leverage to pull the bike up if you loose balance. So, beware of that. If you turn the forks to get the leverage of the stops the grips are over the tank and without having legs like a giraffe you loose all leverage.

This is a great point. The first handlebar swap I did was for a set of Khromewerks bars that pulled back more. Man the leverage was horrible. Switched to 13" apes and it's amazing how much easier it is to stand the bike up from the kickstand.

Thanks all for the input. I had not thought about the handlebar change affecting the lifting point. I guess I better figure out another way to manage a tilted bike. Thanks

Great looking ride Sneezy. My first time out just could not get over how well balanced 943 lbs is. It only gets better with time. Ride safe....
