Coolant leak
« on: December 15, 2014, 07:52:54 AM »

My bike developed a coolant leak.  It was first noticed after the 5K service.  The day after the service when out for a ride I noticed a little coolant dripping down the inside right lower.  Took it to dealer.  They felt the found the leak at a clamp near the fill neck.  All fixed they said.

Road the bike 150 miles after the fix no issues.

Road the bike again yesterday, and at about 140 miles into the ride, I notice coolant dripping down the inside right lower again.  I am upset with local dealer now.  But then at a coffee stop on our ride, I notice my friends 15 CVO Road Glide has the same coolant on the right side lower.  His bike has not made it to the 5K service yet.

Very strange.  Neither of us had issues at 80 plus degree days in FL with coolant.

Both times I have had the issue it was below 35 degrees.  My friends one time, was below 35, and like me on a longer ride, not a short 30 mile ride.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your new ride... I thought that they had all this stuff figured out with the 14"s.  :nixweiss:

With still having leakage concerns, I'm surprised that they don't throw in a box of Depends with every new purchase!  ::)

Seriously though, I trust they get you all fixed up and you can continue to enjoy your new ride.

How hard can it be to circulate coolant?  Coolant cooled motors have only been around for about eighty years or so...   :nixweiss:

....and in about another 80, the MoCo will have all the bugs worked out......

Dave, sorry you are having issues with the new scoot.  At least you got the head bearing issues sorted.  Why is it leaking in cool weather and not warm?  Doesn't make any sense.  Are you going to leave it at SMHD for repair or take care of it after you get back from your stint at work offshore?  If you need any help with it while you are away, let me know....glad to help out.

I've only got about 150 miles on my 2015 FLTRUSE now and I noticed coolant inside my left cover. As soon as the rain lets up, I'll be getting it in to get it checked. I guess it's good to find it early on.

Haird,

I dropped it off on the way to the airport yesterday.  They have 3 weeks to figure it out.  I will pick it up on the way in from the airport Jan 7th.

I too thought they had a the coolant stuff fixed back in 14.  Heck mine did not drip any until after 6100 miles on it.  Not in hot weather, but in 30 degree weather.  Really does not make sense.

just wondering are they using a friction clamp or a worm gear clamp on the hoses?? ive seen plenty of leaks with a low grade friction clamp... more so in the cold, some thing to do with thermodynamics of two different types of materials  :nixweiss:  never mind im sure they (HD) checked into all of that in research & development     hope its all ironed out for you soon

Took the bike to the dealership this morning to check the coolant leak. I ended up having to leave the bike because it turned out to be a defective hose and it has to be ordered. Apparently the hose is coming apart and they recommended not to ride it. Oh well, guess I'll have to ride the Skunk, hopefully it won't take more than a week to get the part.

Sure hope your hose comes in quick.  So I would guess that is what they have found with mine also.  Did they say anything about mine?

Your Skunk is a great ride....

Well, looks like I get to join this thread. Bike has 121 miles on it. Been on the jack all winter. It was finally warm enough in the uninsulated garage to get busy with my winter mods. Noticed a puddle in the left lower. Called the dealer and told them I'll have it to them in a few days. I'll point out what Joe found out about the hose being bad. The driveway finally thawed out enough and we've had some rain lately to wash the salt off the roads so I'm itching to get some miles on it.

Mine was on the right side.  I believe they replaced the hose and the clamp.  I have about 2200 miles or more on it since the repairs and zero issues.  Joe has also put a lot of miles on his since the repairs and no issues.
