Can you share a SERT?
« on: January 09, 2007, 08:50:40 AM »

My buddy and I are both getting CVO's in the next 30-45 days from the same dealership.  He is on the Dyna and I on the SERK.  My question is can we split the cost of the SERT and have the dealer utilize the same unit for both of our bikes.

I have never utilized one before, so I am not sure if the set up has to be exclusive to one bike.  Same engine on both and this would save us a ton of dough to use on other assorted goodies.

Any issues with this? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hi Cobaltman,
From what I have read the SERT mates with the ECM and can not be changed. If you moved it from one bike to another you would have to move the ECM too. But I do not own one so mabe an owner will answer you soon. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Nope, RT's are not interchangeable (shared).  At the first initialization the unit is mated to your ECM and downloads a variety of identifying data from your particular bike that is specific to that ECM.

Right you are... mere mortals would not be able to bypass this. I expect, however, that it can be done by resetting the RT to factory default. How is this done?? I don't have a clue, but it's likely that the information is stored on a static RAM chip much like your computers BIOS. I'll bet someone could make some bucks figuring this one out. Now, understand I am NOT advocating infringement on the MOCOs copyrighted or licensed products .... my ideas are strictly hypothetical.  :o ::) ::) ::) ;)

No can do amigo.   :-X  As stated above, the SERT is electronically "signed" to your ECM and will not work with any other ECM.  That's why once you get one, the dealer will tell you to make sure you bring the SERT with you if you're going to do any dyno work and EFI mapping...they don't even have a "master SERT" at the dealerships...if you lose your module, you have to buy another SERT and have it associate with your ECM and redo the mapping.

Based upon pretty good knowledge, its' already been tried and is protected much as my "on the road" laptop is in that any hacking or unauthorized password attempts results in a total chip re-format to clean.  With the RT, I'm told that once the integrity has been violated that it cannot be reused and will not accept any input.

You and your buddy can share a SERT.  Doing so just means that you or he is riding b*tch.

They recommended that I bring in the SERT for the service work as well.

All you will need to bring is the interface (see picture below). This picture is old and shows cables of which are no longer included in the SERT package and can be brought separately.

In the immortal words of Ed McMahon, "You are correct, Sir!!!"   The dealer has/or should have, everything but the module, so that's all you need to take with you....Some recommend you leave it with the bike...not sure about that recommendation, but I do know, I won't leave home without it, just in case.

Exactly. If you are going on an extended trip doesn't hurt to take the module and have your latest map on a disk/cd w/you in case something were to happen to your ECM.
