Excellent choice.  Nothing is worse than a flat on the road or a crash caused by a blow out.

Have a tube put in it. Been there done that before. A lot cheaper than a tire and you'll get your tread out of that one.

Got to agree. get a patch put on the inside and run a tube in it. Have done this before on a couple of occasions with no problems. At least that way you get full use of the tire.

Can this be repaired with a plug?
« Reply #18 on: August 16, 2015, 02:41:06 AM »

First question is.... Is it leaking air? (I may have skimmed over that) The tread area is more than an inch thick, if it's not actually a puncture then remove the metal junk, test for leaks and ride on.

If you decide you want to use a tube to get your money's worth out of the tire, first make sure the tire is rated for use with a tube.  Most of the earlier tires for Harley's like the D402's could be used with or without tubes, and they were listed that way by Dunflop (tube/tubeless).  I haven't seen that same designation used on the D407.  :nixweiss:

My first thoughts on this were how big is the puncture, i.e., is that just the head of the nail showing? Cure with inside patch and tube.

Glad this thread was posted. I have never heard of a problem with plugs blowing out so I learned something today. Oh, make that two things, I didn't know you could not run a tube in a tire not designed for a tube.

let me say again coming from someone who has more than 100 tires on the road daily. forget the tire with a hole or puncture and go buy yourself a tire. you do not want to .....roll the dice and take a chance on two wheels!!

Personally I have been there with a nail in a new tire.  I had to consider the financial pain vs the potential physical pain or worse causing someone else physical pain if the tire failed.  I purchased a new tire.

Picked this up to day. I don't know if it can be repaired with a plug or not? I don't want to be stuck with a new tire if it can be plugged. I know when there is side wall damage a new tier is required but not sure on nails in the tread. If you can plug this kind of flat I'll just get a repair kit and do it myself
I haven't called my breakdown service as yet I was hoping for some input first, Can it be repaired?, will it need replacing? If it can be repaired, CAN a plug be used or dose a patch have to be put on the inside?

What's your life worth?

Back in about 1990 a friend had a tire plugged.  He died about 80 miles into that plugged tire.

A tire plug on a motorcycle tire is just an emergency to get you to the next place to change the tire.  Tires and brakes are the two most important things on your bike....what's your life worth?  :nixweiss:

Tomorrow I'm having the bike picked up and taken to a bike tire shop. I'll see if a tube can be put in if not then it will be new rubber.
I'm taking all advice and staying away from the plugs

Good decision.  Plug kits -  I do carry one on the bike - are for emergency repair in order to allow one to ride carefully to a tire shop.  A reputable tire shop should give you advice based on your tire.

Is it actually leaking?
Is it maybe possible that even after removing the metal bits that you'll find that it's not actually punctured?

I've run plugged tires for 1,000s of miles, never an issue, I used leather plugs only.

'Worked for Goodyear in my younger days...

'Wouldn't run a tube unless the tire is made for it.

I gotta say Longlast, JC is correct! Taking the advice of someone else as to whether you should risk your life to save a few hundred bucks is insane! Most new car dealerships will no longer plug a tire due to liability and thats on a car. We are all just trying to give our worried opinion.
