So here's the rest of the story. Been riding a bit for about a month after our winter and the problem showed up again. All the same over voltage codes as before. So took it to the dealer and left it for a couple days. Finally they came to the conclusion the voltage regulator was bad. Replaced it and so far it's good. Sure wasn't a heated grip problem.

Thanks again for all the tips.

The voltage regulators have been a source of failure on my bikes - on '06 when it was about a year old; my '12 when it was about a year old and before the recall was announced then last fall on my '07 - it held in there the longest - 8 years and 90k.  You would think the moco could source better quality electrical parts but I guess it is not a high priority for them.

Was riding this past weekend with a friend that hS a 2012 cvo sg3. . His voltage regulator quit without any signs of going bad. . Only 6k miles on that one.  It was replaced under the bad reg campaign a few yrs ago. . Never can tell when they will go.  :nixweiss:

Happy it finally got sorted out Greg.  It's a shame that so many Harley dealerships have absolutely no clue about much of anything tougher than an oil change (and some even botch those), but until the Mothership demands that franchised dealers actually hire and train qualified people, versus just hiring the cheapest people they can find or the dumbest relatives, I don't see much hope for improvement.  The typical Harley dealer these days is similar to a used car dealer (and many of them used to be one):  All sales, no service.

Seems like this dealer has real trouble with electrical/electronic issues more than they do with mechanical problems. They commented they think chrome regulators fail at a higher rate than the black painted version. They think the black one dissipates heat better. Anyone have experience with that?

Thanks

I would think it depends on weather it's a shunt or series regulator. A shunt type dumps (or loads) excess current to the stator while a series type dissipates it as heat through the r&r fins which necessitates more airflow. One could assume that chrome could inhibit that process on a series type

Interesting, didn't know the differences. I doubt my dealer would know any of that information let alone understand it. Wonder if anyone knows which type is used.

Thanks for the info....

All my failures have been chrome regulators on my CVOs.  However my '07 now has a black regulator as that is all Pig Trail Harley in Fayetteville, AR, had in stock last fall during the Blues, Bikes and BBQ event.
