Weird intercom problem.
« on: March 27, 2016, 12:59:50 PM »

Strange problems with my Harleys never cease to amaze, confuse and pizz me off!  Here's the latest and I hope someone may be able to shed some light on it.  This is on my 2012 cuse7.

Since last summer I've had issues with the intercom system between me and my co-rider.  Finally after exhaustive testing and contemplation I determined the most likely source to be the audio overlay wire harness (p/n 69200167) which has the hook up for the passenger's headset.  My dealer agreed and I just had it replaced.  So far so good.  Original problems seem to be rectified but now a totally new issue has arisen.

I always ride with the INT and CB turned ON so I can communicate with my co-rider and with other riders in my group.  When you press the PTT button it activates both the CB and the INT.  You can see the CB and INT notations at the bottom left of the radio display highlighted when activated.  Now sometimes when the PTT button is released the CB goes inactive but the INT is still activated.  The radio volume is reduced as it should be when INT is active and I can't hear fellow riders replying to me on their CBs.

It does usually release the INT after a minute or so but sometimes I've had to turn the radio off and back on to return to normal operation.  And of course just to make it interesting it is intermittent and doesn't happen everytime.

This problem was not present before the new audio overlay harness was installed and arose immediately afterward.  I have no idea  :nixweiss: how that might cause this new problem but sure hope to find a solution before we head out to CA for the GTG in a few weeks.  Any ideas?

To me it sounds like the vox setting for the intercom is staying open try lowering the vox setting.

If I remember correctly... you do not press the PTT to use the Intercom if you have the VOX turned on.

My BSR will turn down the volume for the CB side, and put up with my communication across the CB, but it's a one sided conversation for her.

Setting up the VOX Sensitivity takes a bit of trial and error (wind noise and all).  But, anything communicated through the driver headset will transfer to the passenger headset.

If you are using the PTT, you are communicating on the CB and Intercom.  If you simply break the threshold for the VOX, you are talking with your passenger alone.

Thanks 14CVOultra and T-Hawk.  You guys are 100% correct.  But unfortunately that is not the problem.

I don't use the PTT to talk on the intercom.  As you both said talking will break the VOX and activate the INT.  VOX sensitivity is set to mid point which is where I always keep it.  Even when wind / ambient noise has been so high as to break VOX it has never stayed activated without interruption.

PTT is only pressed when making a CB transmission and that is the problem.  Xmit is OK but upon release of PTT the INT stays active for some reason and I can't hear my riding friends response from their CBs.  Really weird, but then again most all the problems I've had with my Harleys have been really strange to say the least.

I would still try turning the vox gain down The vox may be opening on the intercom from a reverse burst of static noise from the CB when you release the PTT button.

I had the same problem with my '09, Jerry.  I finally traced it back to the NIM.  Removing it resolved the issue.  Don't know whether you have one installed, but if you do, it might be something to consider.

Yes I do have the NIM.  But it seems to be functioning properly in that the nav prompts come through.  This problem (INT hanging open) only happens after I have pressed the PTT button.

I have some more troubleshooting to do no doubt.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

Exactly the problem I had.  Everything worked as advertised until I hit PTT.  Removing the NIM solved the problem.

K.  I'll try that - disconnect the NIM and see if that works.  Possibly bad NIM.  Who knows.   :nixweiss:

I should probably have been more specific.  I not only disconnected the NIM, but removed it's entire wiring harness as well.  Good luck.  The job's a pain, but easily done at home.

NIM - navigation interface module. It lets the GPS nav prompts come through the audio system.

More specifically, it's an option for the pre '14 touring bikes when using one of HD's Garmin Zumo GPS units.  Not a worry on your bike, Wingman.

Jerry, I have a brand new NIM in a box never used. Part number 83537-11A. As you know Jerry this will not work on my 15 Limited CVO if you want this NIM you can have it. Just let me know and I will ship it to you.
