16 SG CVO Tourpak & speaker addition tips
« on: June 15, 2016, 01:57:09 AM »

I purchased my first CVO a few weeks ago. I chose the '16 SG because I loved the Carbon Crystal with Ghost Flames color scheme. But I wanted a detachable Tourpak and comfy seat/backrest for the Mrs. I'm making this post because adding the speakers to the Tourpak was an adventure and I want to save others the trouble I encountered.

The current catalog doesn't include the correct wiring harness for this setup. And they also say it doesn't work for a detachable Tourpak. The new catalog coming out in a few months will have this info, but here it is for you now.

There are two key part numbers needed to add a detachable Tourpak with speakers to your 16 FLHXSE:
 - Wiring harness #69201477 - which is not in the current catalog but is online and is available for purchase;
 - Amp kit #76000584 - which is a swap out for part #76000585. This is a saddle bag mounted amp kit (76000584) versus the Tourpak mounted unit (76000585), which is required to be detachable.

When the dealer did this addition, the factory asked for pictures and install details because they didn't think it could be done. Well, it's in and working great. Six speakers and three amps when the Tourpak is mounted. Each saddlebag now has an amp, one for the saddlebag speakers and one for the Tourpak speakers. Two connections to connect/disconnect when mounting/removing the Tourpak.

I'm not convinced the Boom Audio ll system is the best audio system out there, but I wanted to stay with dealer installed HD gear for warranty reasons. Hope this info is helpful.

Great post.  Any pics of the additional amp and plug?  Is it worth all the hassle for 2 more speakers?

Toneaero - I'll load pics when I get home this evening.

Funny you should ask about the benefits for only 2 more speakers. I wasn't really interested in adding more sound to the bike. I just didn't like the look of the King Tourpak with the big backrest without the speaker pods to "fill in" the gap between the seat and backrest. I like the look with the speakers better. So that started me down the path to add the speakers and amp. Granted, that's an expensive addition that I didn't really think I needed, but considering it's a CVO, I wanted do it right. Was it worth it? I like it because it finishes the bike (to me) when we have it in 2 up touring mode. But I don't miss anything soundwise when I have it setup with the solo seat and no tourpak.

FYI - I'm having some trouble with the Tourpak system when using the Speed Volume Control. The speakers "smack" as soon as the volume control kicks in - even at the lowest setting. There are no problems when the Tourpak is removed. At the dealership today. MoCo said it was just blown speakers, but the replacements are doing the same. Flashing the head unit now. Not fixed yet. Will keep you posted.

Good point on filling in the gap.  Could you post a shot of how the king tour pack looks in relations to the bike?  I'm stuck deciding on King tour vs chopped.

One thing I love about this SG is the ability to convert from a long haul touring set-up to a great looking solo run around set-up in just a few minutes.

Sorry for all the pics, but I can't figure out how to build a collage to load several in one post.

Here are both amps located one in each saddlebag.

Here are the two connectors for the detachable Tourpak. One for the head unit and one for the amp.

Looks Great! We have the same set up on our '16 Carbon. Full Tour/Weekend Hot Rod. Question - is there still the ability to add tour pack lights with the addition of the speakers and amps?   :nixweiss: We added the full tour pack, bit haven't gotten to speakers or lights yet.

Here's a tip don't use Harley speakers. Did you think about putting both speakers in left saddlebag so you would have full space in right one? I guess may cause a heat issue.

262 CVO 16 - I was told that lights can be added to the Tourpak with speakers.  It was one of the options discussed with the "HD Chrome Consultant" when we fitted the bike from the dealer. Some say the wiring harness it the same as the Ultra, but I can tell you that the Tourpak speaker kit DOES NOT allow for passenger volume and mode control of the Infotainment system on the SG. So there must be some differences.

bigchuck - We have discussed non-HD speakers.  I spoke with Pete at CustomzSoundz in Sioux Falls, SD, but he is a bit of a purist when it comes to sound.  He doesn't want to put his speakers in a Boom 2 system - says it'll still "sound like crap". I don't believe the HD Boom 2 is the best available, but I didn't want any warranty issues with HD on a brand new bike, so we stayed with the HD system. Also, Pete won't use the saddlebag lid speakers and instead installs speakers in the lowers. He pulls all the Boom 2 speakers & amps and installs new.  His systems sound fantastic - but I just don't want to replace the bag lids on top of the extra $ for a new system. I know there are others (J&M, etc...) but I'm hopeful the Boom 2 will be okay.

Regarding the install of an amp in each saddlebag - I thought they were going to install both in one bag, but they put one in each instead.  I'm okay with it. As you said, probably would be a heat issue with both in the same bag.

FYI -  We are still having problems with the Tourpak speakers.  4 hours at the dealer on Wednesday and no solution. Replaced both speakers (tested blown) and there is still a problem when the Volume Speed Control is on. So the technician swapped the two amps but the problem remained with the Tourpak speakers - so it's not the amp.  Retested the new speakers and now they are also testing blown. I don't want to replace them again until we have some better answers about the problem source. These systems are set up for 6 & 8 speakers, so the problem is perplexing everyone. Lucky me, a "unique" problem nobody knows how to fix!
