Good news Bad news Weekend!
« on: September 06, 2016, 11:29:43 AM »

Went to leave Friday afternoon for a long weekend ride and my 13 CVO was chirping like a nest of baby robins! (stole that line from someone else)
So being the smart man that I am, (I have 2 HD's) I decided to take my 2nd HD. I moved all the luggage from the 13 CVO to the 08 and away we went.
Something happened to the back up HD so I stopped in Marion Il to have it looked at and 4 hours later I left there on this sweet ride! They made me a great deal that I jumped on! Not the color I was originally interested in but since this is my wife's bike I let her chose the color!

After 800 miles I must say I do like this bike and all of its new gadgets! The biggest one that shocked me was how the little luggage lights come on when you unlock the bike with the FOB. A very nice touch that I was not expecting! Radio is ok sound wise and I am getting used to the new GPS. Definitely going to miss my Garmin though until I figure out this thing! Wife loves the extra room and so far the ride is ok. I do see premium rear shocks in my future though!
Power is pretty similar to my 13 CVO but I do see an exhaust change in my future as well.

Darn I was going to copyright my line about the baby robins, lol. Sorry you had to use that description though.

Nice bike!

I still see a lot of Garmin cradles on the Rushmores, so you're not alone in your feelings about the GPS.

Nice bike, sorry you ended up getting it under those circumstances but it seems like it all worked out in the end. Looks like you still have any issue with "your" bike back home. How many miles on the 13?

43,000 , talked to a couple of indy shops this morning. I will get it to one of them this week. IF it is the lifters I intend to go with the S&S premiums but stick with the SE255 cams, do the cam bearings and chain tensioners as well while I am in there.
Nothing else that isn't needed. I am happy with the HP & Torque the way it is.

43K miles - I would think these would last longer but it seems not. I have to start planning on what to replace when to insure no problems when I am riding.

I am glad it all worked out for you.

Just talked to the indy working on my 13. They heard the noise and have the engine tore down. Lifters look good but cam looks worn. That seems odd to me. so far though they have not found the source of the noise. They felt, like me, that it was definitely coming from inside the engine.

The breakdown on my 2012 cuse7 sounds remarkably similar - motor making the chirping sound I described as a nest full of hungry baby robins.  Dealer tore the top end down last week.  Some metal transfer on one of the lifters / cam lobe but looked pretty mild.  Definite wear in the oil pump cavity.  Cam chain tensioner shoes looked remarkably good.  But absolutely no sign of metal particles roaming around.

Dealer tech & service manager (and I) expected to see something broken because it sounded really bad, wouldn't idle right and hiccuped while pulling it on the rack.  But they did note restriction in the flywheel / crankshaft.  It seemed to be binding in one spot so service manager said probably bad journal bearings.  ESP told them to split the cases to inspect the bottom end for anything else that might be amiss or broken and ESP inspector is due this week to review and decide on repair strategy.

Ok here is the latest

Checked crank and it moves smoothly and has less than 4,000 run out.

One cam lobe is worn a lot more than the others and one lifter has some pitting on it. Very little metal flakes running around, almost so little as to say there is none!

Decided to replace the cam plate (S&S), tensioners(even tho they look like new) S&S premium lifters and S&S cam bearings. Going back with HD 255 cams, I need a part number for them so I can order them from Surdyke.com!
Top end all looks great so leaving that alone.
Oil pump looks great so leaving that alone.
Going to replace the inner primary bearing as well since we are right there. Comp looks great as well.

I think that is everything!

Also have to contact Steve at Fulsac, my pipe is cracked and the rear bracket broke as well.

Sounds great!  I may have missed this but what was making the noise you and the dealer heard?

The engine had a very loud chirping noise, like a next of baby robins chirping away through a 200 watt megaphone! Through this forum I learned that the lifters will make that noise right before they totally fail!

If you are replacing the Primary bearing best to use the Baker one. You can talk to Jim hddude about this. Mine was done way back on my 07 CVO and still no issues.

The primary bearing appears to be good but since we are right there already we thought now was the time to change it out
