Some folks have installed their 117" upgrade without doing the bottom end and have not had any problems.

I sent mine to Dark Horse and then added a SE Timken bearing. For me, I can sleep at night knowing I don't have to worry bout that!

Simple answer is maybe, depends on where its at, how you ride etc.   When going larger I always suggest working a crank or buying a replacement like S&S or P3R.

Just because you know the cam side run out does not mean you know the whole story.   Bushings, heat, comp side really only tested out of the case.  Can get an idea using the 4 pt method due to the splines on the comp side.

I wouldn't do it, mostly because Murphy would bite me while I was on vacation as the most inopportune time to have an issue.   To me not worth the chance of being stuck over the cost or my vacation time.

maybe is a good answer,if your looking to build it (or just looking for piece of mind) have darkhorse do it the crank (or get a S&S unit)

If you plan to ride it aggressively, and I assume you would do so after spending the time and money to do those mods, I would definitely split the cases and do the bottom end.  Of course the purpose of that 117 drop-on kit is to avoid having to split the cases or machine the spigot openings, so if you decide to split them you can look at other options besides that kit.

HP wouldn't be my concern.  Bottom end tq and engine breaking is why I like to get my cranks done.

"Tattoo " on Harley tech Talk did one with 259 cams and shaved the heads .018 & .030 head gasket and got mid 120's . Without doing anything to the heads and thich .045 HD gasket you are looking at 108-115 neighborhood. Hearing the '259's like compression. Surburban HD is selling a set of Mahle 10.8's for the 117 builds for $400 Believe that' might be the way to go .

Really like to find out how much you can mill a "wet head"safely. . I'm seeing .020 and I heard .040 the other day. Thinking with .020 you could get the chamber  down to about 92cc ,with .030 gasket and piston -.005 in the hole your static compression would be about 10. 5 and corrected compression of  9.3 and 190 CCP with 259 cams . Thinking that would bust the 120 mark and be a blast to ride...
