Why won't the SE 117 kit work on a 2009 model
« on: January 02, 2017, 08:28:57 PM »

I was getting pretty excited about doing this upgrade but it doesn't look like they offer it for older 110's. Why not? I am bummed.

Thanks/Sinker

The book probably says it won't work because 09's did not have a cat. So it will not make emissions.

If the kit is for the 110" motor, it should fit. And sorry but all of the 2009 110's did have catalytic converters.

The switch from having the cats in the mufflers to having them in the exhaust pipe did in fact occur for the 2009 CVO models, when they went to the new style frame and the 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust system.  Only the CVO's and California models were affected however, so you could buy the headpipe assembly for a 49 state regular model and wind up with a non-cat headpipe for your CVO.  That changed again for 2010, when all the touring models went to catalyst headpipes.  Just a little trivia I thought I'd throw into the conversation.

And btw, the subject engine kit should fit any 110, but since Harley had to make it a street legal kit to keep EPA off their butts, they only went back to the 2010 models because the standards are the same for 2010 to present, but were different for 2008-2009.  It cost's money to do the certification testing for EPA approval, and obviously they didn't see fit to spend additional money on certifying the older non-current standards models.  Since I'm guessing Sinker probably doesn't care about it being EPA legal, he should feel free to do that kit if he wants, or a higher output version from someone else.

Just like Jerry said, 2009 CVO's had a cat, but 2009 non-CVO's did not, except for the Cali models. All 2010 touring models got cats.

I believe my 2009 was one of the first beta testers on this fourm for this HD 117 Drop On Kit built by GMR, Steve documented the build, Do a search for HD 117 Drop On Kit on this forum. If you are using the stock crank it should drop on. Steve gave my bike the full GMR treatment which included a set of S&S wheels, & the Blue pump, & plate. The pistons required a little reliefing to accommodate the S&S rods. I have less than 3000 miles on the build & all is good.....   GO FOR IT!!!!
