New noise doesn't sound good
« on: March 29, 2017, 05:59:37 AM »

Heard this noise the other day, found a video on Youtube;

From the comments on the video I still have no clue what it could be, other than it doesn't sound good.  I am planning to take it into the shop this coming Saturday, but any suggestions and ideas would be very helpful.

This morning riding into work it felt like it would stutter a bit while cruising on the highway.  Just enough that I noticed it would seem to lose power then grab again, made me wonder if something really bad is happening to the motor.

My bike is the 2015 Road Glide Ultra CVO, just rolled over 36,000.

Lifters here too.

And from your description, that's exactly what my motor did when the lifter crapped out.

When you hear a new noise that doesn't sound good, I would think the smart thing to do would be to shut it down to hopefully prevent a total failure.  Anyone who has followed the forum over the past six years should be familiar with the lifter failures in CVO110 engines.  When it starts making that noise, damage is already being done.  Continuing to run the engine just means the repair bill keeps getting bigger.

Dropped the bike off this morning.  They concur with your diagnosis, lifters.  The parts are in stock and has been scheduled for completion this coming Thursday.  If all goes well I will be back on the bike on Friday afternoon.

Still under warranty? Either way I recommend you head off worrisome  future lifter problems by replacing them with a set of S&S Premium lifters. And if you're keeping the stock pushrods you can't go wrong installing a set of Rockouts in your rockers .....you may be amazed at how much more quiet your valve train becomes. I went that route as a precautionary measure and now my twin cam valve train is almost as quiet as an M8 :2vrolijk_21:!

The standard S&S lifters would be fine,if the bad lifter/lifters lost any rollers, make sure the HD dealer dosnt just do a quick clean up & install new lifters and let it go,all the debris MUST be cleaned out of motor & oil tank

Yes, all the work is being done under original warranty.

Did talk to them about fully inspecting and they assured me that is part of their process to check other parts and look for shavings.

I have a 2013 Ultra Classic CVO Anniversary with the SE110. I have 35000 miles on it and it started making that noise with a loud chirp. I had just bought the bike and have extended warranty on it. Turned out to be a cam bearing locked up and took out the cam plate, cams, chains, lifters, tensioners, and oil pump. Warranty is fixing and the dealer is paying the deductible.

Definitely go with the rocker lockers or Rockouts.  I just did and big big difference especially around 2800 to 3200 RPM. You guys would be surprised at the fact that a lot of Harley Service writers and techs do not know about them. My tech who races at Bonneville had not and after the install he is going to recommend them to his customers with valve train issues. CAHDBIKER

Are "rockouts" the same thing as "rockerlockers"?  I just saw them online the other day. Mine isn't making noise (yet) but I'm learning for when it does what I could/should do.

Did the dealer find anything else wrong besides the lifters? Would love to hear the final outcome.

Nothing else was found to be wrong with the bike.  I am now at over 53,000 miles and enjoying the riding.

Was out to California and back in early June.  Up to northern Michigan in early July.  Over to West Virginia this past weekend.  Heading to North Carolina next month for the solar eclipse.
