Abnormal tire wear

Got something strange going on with the wear pattern on rear tire. Don't do left hand burn outs or only make left hand corners. Drive belt is tracking well enough it is not riding on either side of the drive pulley leading me to believe that tire is fairly square to the bike, and up on jack I really don't feel and looseness. Bike is handling as alway. Any suggestions? Bad shock possible?

For it to be wearing that unevenly there may be an issue on the bike with alignment. Have other tires worn the same way? Have you kept up on the tire pressure?

Its not normal for a tire to wear that much more on one side than the other.

That looks like cupping to me.

I haven't ever had a tire cup on just one side before is what is throwing me

Jim this is the first tire I have ever had wear that way. I have had cupping before with the OEM tires but it was uniform on both side. How is the best way to check for alignment? 09 and has the cams on both sides of the wheel bolt and belt appears to be tracking in center of pulley. If one of the cams were screwed up wouldn't the drive belt be riding the side of the drive pulley?

Sure with he had posted a pic of the tire. This is the AE tire and I am in the 13 to 14000 range. Just never had a tire only wear out on one edge, 2/3's of the tire is in great shape

Lol there is the pic. That is an exaggerated example of what I have too. You have a few more mile on it than I do and would bet another 2000 and we would have pairs. Crown could have something to do with it, maybe just never seen it on the OEM tires because they were cupped so by by 10,000 they came off. I am anal on tire pressure and keep at 42. I feel a little better now seeing a match because I have the bike up on the jack now and can't find a dang thing that has any slop. Thank you for postings that CatEye

I had looked at the Commanders but have seen a lot of post about wet traction. I seem to have a real issue with being smart enough to get out of the rain so that has kind of scared me off them for now

Agreed not normal for a tire to wear that way, But----- I have had two street glides and both had worn the same way, sold the 15 before doing anything about it and on the 16 I switched to Michelin and so far so good, no cupping or abnormal wear

I only got caught in a light rain last Wednesday in Maggie Valley, the roads where wet, didn't have any problem heading back to the hotel, but again it wasn't a heavy rain

Maybe so. Something that I just thought of too, and have no idea if it would have an effect or not but this tire has been on the drum twice for tuning...

With CatEyes post and me going through the bike again and finding nothing loose I may just have to say 14,000 may be the limit for my riding. Got to be happy with that...about 5000 more than I got out of the stock Dunlops

I only got 12k out of the rear Dunlop, was cupping and had a lot of noise when on a smooth left curve road, I have a little over 4k on the commander II's, I will update you with how they do but I may only get another 2k on them before winter, I will also let you know how they are in the rain, I cant believe I haven't been caught in the rain yet in NE Ohio, but it will happen :D

Oh yea if you are going to ride you will sooner or later find rain...  ;D. Wife and I have a dumb rule, we decided if we ride by opening the garage door. If its not raining we go...sometimes we get really wet 10 miles down the road...lol. Weatherman here in this area does the same.

I can't say that I have actually stopped and looked at the motor mounts but haven't noticed any extra movement in the motor either. I'll take a.closer look at them.

Front is.also the AE and it is somewhere around 20,000 and.looks great for a tire with that kind.of miles. No cupping and nice smooth wear.

Will probably replace wheel bearing with the tire this go around just to see if it makes any difference.

Left turns take a lot longer and take more rubber off than the right hand turns...in the USA. I've been told that's why the left side of the rear tire always shows the wear first. My bike starts making noise on the left handers WAY before the right handers after about 7000 miles on OEM tires. I still ride them to 12000ish and then plan on new tires. This year I'm going to try Pirreli Night Dragons because...why not?

I have Never gotten more than 7k miles from Any tire on my FXR4.
Hopefully my newly reworked Road King will be better. The Michelin Commander 2 rear tire was better than others but I can't get more than 77k miles on them.  I Have never peeled out or done a wheelie on that bike.

Had customer that had same problem with the about the same mileage.  He switched to ME888 and so far so good.  Have installed several AE and only see the problem with the one so far.

Hopefully my newly reworked Road King will be better. The Michelin Commander 2 rear tire was better than others but I can't get more than 77k miles on them.  I Have never peeled out or done a wheelie on that bike.

7 to 9000 has always been the junk point in the past with the OEM, so I am very happy to be well beyond that. BUT....lol. when I looked at the tire and see the 5000 miles left in the half of the tire that I guess I don't use

Thank you. Maybe it is a one off then. First concern was the bike and possible problem there. Finding none bothered me as to what I was missing. I'll have to give the AE another go and see if the outcome is the same

Just out of boredom I emailed Dunlop/AE with the pics of the tire and finding nothing with the bike. Just curious as much as anything to see if I can even get a reply from them

Well I got a surprise today. Dunlop replied to my email with a number to call to talk to a service rep. Very nice guy and after a 10 minute chat we ended nowhere except maybe we were overloading the tire and were taking left hand corners much harder than right hand.....lol. I will say though as was mention in an earlier post, the rep felt like crown of the road could play a piece of it. He did make the comment that their European counterparts hear of higher wear on the right side of the tire. Long story short no real answers. Guessing I will throw another one on and see how it goes. Still several thousand miles ahead of where I had to chunk the OEM Dunlops

Maybe they could set up an exchange program with our European counterparts. We could wear out the left side and they could wear out the right. At a predetermined point of wear we exchange and balance the wear back out...  :huepfenjump3:

Not sure why Europe would have the reverse--only England (and most of its former colonies) drives on the left side.

Thanks for the follow up....I was thinking maybe Dunlop was expecting us to rotate tires every 1000 miles to maintain even tire wear.   :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
Or they expect us to put the bike in reverse gear and then ride backwards half the time.   ;)
