117 kit stage 3
« on: December 13, 2017, 08:01:36 PM »

Has anybody used the stage 3 with the 2018 CVO Ultra and is it worth it, I am taking the motor apart to diamond cut and they are saying I may as well use stage 3. Opinions are needed. Thank you

I was not aware that are any 2018 117" CVO Limited stages available from the mother ship.  :nixweiss:

I have a CVO Limited on order, if you know something I don't please tell me!

My Harley Dealer suggested it because I’m taking my motor apart to diamond cut it.

I have a 2018 FLHTKSE that I rode stock for a about a thousand miles while waiting on parts. I had the stage 3 kit, High Flow exhaust, and Heavy Breather A/C installed along with the Street Tuner and Smart Tune Auto module. No dyno runs to compare, but it feels like a different bike. I had a 2016 SERG with a 117 stage 3 kit and Pro Super Tuner with Fullsac headers and baffles and the 2018 feels very close on the road, except for the sound of course. Very happy with the upgrade. It was more labor intensive than the stage 3 on the 16, but since you already have it apart that isn't an issue. The stage 4 is a great value for what you get but it shifts the torque curve to the higher rpm bands that I don't use.

A couple of minor negatives :
Fuel mileage went down a couple mpg
Clutch lever pull is increased a little - I don't remember exactly without looking it up but on the order of 2 lbs

Have you had a real tune done on it or are you using a canned tune?

With the Street tuner about the only thing you can change is VE, so no dyno tune, I am still running the HD download for warranty reasons.

Also the stage 2 power cam is shown as applying to the 2018 117 but not the torque cam.

The stock cam in the 2018 seems to be a little bit of a mystery, no specs to be found. I couldn't get a straight answer on what it was, and how much of a change I would be looking at moving to the SE8-462 cam.

These kits you have mentioned and sent links to are for a 114 to 117, am I missing something here....  The 2018 CVO's already have a 117" motor and harley does not list out any Stage kits  to improve the 117"... ..   Ironically the HD store shows the stage lll kits fitting the '18's but again they are already a 117" configuration....

Yup, you're right.  When I searched the Harley site I used a 2018 CVO Limited as the model to search for and those came up.  I didn't double check, which I should know to do by now since their site often gives bad results.  Sorry about that.

Jerry

While we're talking about this, I'd like someone to explain this listing in the actual 2018 Screamin' Eagle catalog I've attached below.  Notice the price for the kit to take a 117 to a 117 is the same as the other Stage IV kits, but of course the 117 shouldn't need new cylinders, etc..

Seems to me looking at this that they skip stage 1 & 2.

While you don't need the cylinders, they do not offer a kit without them. You need the higher compression pistons, stronger valve springs, and new cam. If you look in the catalog, they are listed as a 114 to 117 or a 117 to 117 kit.

Those are not kits to install on a 117", those are kits to go from 114" to 117". My 2018 CVO Limited (when it arrives) will come stock with a 117". A true Stage 4 would make it bigger, maybe 124"??
