warped rotors
« on: May 17, 2020, 09:34:23 AM »

7000 miles rotors are warped. With floating rotors, shouldn't that take out the pulsating from being warped? If not do you replace rotors with the OEM or go aftremarket and if aftermarket what do you go with for the Aggressor wheels? Thank you, the other JC

I had to go replace mine on a 19 CVO rg at 7000 miles also.  First time ever I had to do that.  It was covered under warranty and no questions were asked.    I think the new roters just suck and don't last.  I don't have any idea why.   ???  Stuart

It's been a problem for years, and more so especially after Harley started using rotors that don't have a center carrier mounted to the hub.  You have the style mounted directly to the wheel, and now you have to deal not only with warping of the actual rotors but also a lateral runout condition of the mounting points on the wheels.  That was found to be a problem with some wheels, and bolting a new rotor to such a wheel leads to fairly rapid warping.  The "floating" feature of the rotors is very limited and won't mitigate the problem.  Have the wheel checked for lateral variation of the rotor mounting pads before you buy and install new rotors.

Y'all know where the rotors are made right?

New rotors are junk, I'm sure made by the very lowest bidder.  Between my wife and I we have had 14 new Harley's since 2009.  My 09 CVO had rotors replaced once and was told it had to due with original software version for ABS.  No other bike has had rotors replaced, all but two went over 45K miles.

My 19 CVO Road glide is on its 4th set of rotors, second front wheel.  First set replaced at 6000 miles, then again at 1300 miles and again at 20,500 needed replacement and ordered by dealer, but due to covid not installed until 27K miles.  New rim was put on to see if that is why rotors warp. My bet is by 32000 miles I will need rotors again.

Sad that I need rotors more often then tires.   Dealer has checked rims, mounting surfaces, caliper mounts, caliper operation.

Not sure what to do, but once out of warranty cant afford three sets of front rotors a year.

My FXR4 has 96k miles on OEM floating rotors.
My 98 Road King has 68k on OEM non floating rotors
Are the older ones better quality?

HD seems to be designing stuff to "just" work for the casual rider.  As stated many times, most will fail out of warranty.

Best you can do sometimes is look for higher quality aftermarket.  I've found that the NAO pads generate less heat and are easier on the rotors than the more aggressive pads (including OE pads).

Out of 14 new Harleys between my wife and I, had rotors replaced once on my 09.  No other bike had rotors replaced, put at least 45K on all but two of them.

My 19, well it needs new rotors every 6 to 7K miles, more than tires.  I still ride the same.  I really believe its sourcing from cheapest supplier.  Just like my 19 has the only seat that is worn out and looks ragged by 10K miles, cheeper materials.

My 17 cvo wheels were made in Australia and after the dealer changed 3 front rotors we found the mounting points on the wheel were not even and when installing the NEW rotors they were warped right away. If the tech would check the trueness of the WHEEL mounts before slapping on the rotors that may be your issue.
I was told they have a new vendor for the wheels but my 19 still has “Australia” stamped on it. My 19 wheels and rotors seem to be fine, so I’m guessing QC may not be great. Luck of the draw I guess.

I'm on the second front wheel, they replaced the first trying to find the issue.  I'll soon see if it fixes it.

I am curious for you guys that have had the warped rotor or uneven rims - what were the conditions that you experienced that said 'something isnt right'?  Not sure I have been on a bike that had this condition - is it uneven braking, fading, vibration, poor braking, pulsating, jumping around, etc

Just trying to learn what you experienced....  thanks

Get ready for a bad pulse when front brakes are applied.    You will know when you need new rotors.  Stuart.

I too went through two sets of front rotors last summer.  My feeling is that the floating rotor carrier does not have enough structural integrity and can’t handle the load being applied.  It’s permanently deflecting which makes the rotor portion of the assembly run untrue.  In my case I could make that happen with one hard stop.  I asked the dealership to look through their catalog and find the strongest looking rotor they could find (sure was ugly) and put them on.  I needed something that actually worked!  Ran the rest of the season like that with no issue, even with aggressive braking.  Lyndall Bow tie rotors on now with their best (most aggressive) pads and boy does it stop now.  Hopefully they stand up.
