The "hand built" part of CVO production has not been the case for years now.  Initially and for several years the CVO bikes were built in an old building behind the main production plant in York.  There were a few years that some of us from the CVO group toured.  Two or three person teams per bike with frames on various wheeled rolling carts with few modern tools, conveniences, or conveyances.  It was indeed hand-built but it never struck me as "ideal" when compared to modern assembly standards.  It did make for good press though and the people one could speak with seemed generally proud of their efforts.

That all changed when that production was moved to the standard line at York.  Don't remember the specific year but more than a decade ago.  That change brought its own issues.  Specialty paint that was CVO specific not staying matched to an individual bike (mismatched bikes) and a few other interesting glitches.  "Hand built" went away with that change though.

I believe 2009 was the last year the CVOs were built by specific teams. Back in the day the bike moved from point to point along the assembly line and the team of builders moved with the bike until it was finished, then started over with another bare frame.

2009 was the last year CVO was built in a small building to the side of the touring bike line.  A team of two built the bikes.  I toured the CVO line that year, also had a 2009 CVO.   In 2010 the CVO moved to the regular production line in York.

Very nice, that's the color I'd choose.  I like the two tone (three tone?) paint job.

So how many salesmen for Harley have you met that know much at all about the bike they are selling?  I'm really not surprised he did not know that practice was stopped 11 years ago.

Very True... I’m on bike # 26 and always know exactly what I want and how much I will pay before entering a dealership...
