Well I have been waiting on Thunder Heart Industries to come out with the updated version of the Thunder Max for the RDRS that is standard on my bike. The new version is due to be released at the end of this month. I have also decided to not use the fueling 521 cam. Instead I am going with the Cycle Rama 480. I am really looking for more torque. So next week I am going to start the build. The weather will be warming up and I can get some much need riding time in.

Hey Dawg,

Can we get the cam breakdown for each and tell why you selected the one you did? May help for us all to learn what you know?

I went with the Cycle Rama 480 for the early torque. Most of my riding is below 3500 rpm. I will also be pulling a Bushtec Trailer with this bike. I'm not chasing HP numbers on a 1050 lb. Motorcycle. And most of my riding is on the highway. The 480 came highly recommended from quite a few people for being a torque monster. So I hope I made the right decision. If not it would just be another simple cam change. Can't wait to get this build done. It's been a busy winter for me. I need some wind therapy very soon.

The sucess will be strongly dependent on a good tune and a pipe conducive to making torque.

I agree completely. But some cams will climb to their max torque at a lower RPM. Right now that is what I am looking for. I guess time will tell.

Well I finally got around to getting the motor finished. Parts are now becoming scarce. Still waiting on the Rekluse clutch basket and clutches. But the motor is finished and I now have 200 miles on it. I installed the Harley Pro Street Tuner with the Auto Tune Module for the breakin and first dyno numbers. While I have been pretty easy on it I did give it a 1/2 throttle blast up to 3500 RPM and went through the gears. I am very impressed on how quick this bike is. It is going to take a few weeks to get 1000 miles on it before it heads to the treadmill. Can't wait to see the numbers.

When you get it broken in and tuned, try a 6th gear roll on from 60-65! You’ll like the torque!
Mine will keep pulling until you roll off, long grades over the mountains here are NO problem, just set the cruise control for 85 and it will climb with ease.

Thanks Mike. I was at the dealer today talking to the Service Manager. I asked him how many miles he wanted on the motor before the tune. We chucked as he said you tell me when you are ready. Well I have 300 miles on the motor right now and will be riding it this weekend. Soooooo we are talking about the second week of June. I'll get there early and they will pull right into the dyno room. Looking forward to getting this finished up.

Absolutely, He will likely know how to do a "break-in" tune for you. Realize that yours is an M8.  Broke my 117 Twin Cam  in right on the dyno with no miles on it.

The HD with auto tune may be okay with the combo but I always shake my head when I hear people ridding their bikes for 1,000 miles with a bad tune to "break in the motor". Seems crazy to me.  I always believed in letting the rings seat ie. a few good heat cycles and a few easy miles and then I wanted it tuned correctly.

I have already decided to get it tuned asap. I have been busy and when I can ride it's always raining here. And after the first 50 miles I put her back on the lift and changed the engine oil. So you are correct. There is no reason not to put the bike on the dyno and get the tune richened up.

If it didn't break in after 30 miles of normal riding it will never. Harley brewed up the 1000 mile number to buffer warranty issues.

And I have to agree with you. I thought a couple of good weekends of riding local would have put me at 1000 miles. The auto tune is working as the motor is running cooler now. I have over 500 miles on the motor and it is scheduled to be dynoed a week from tomorrow, Now if I can find the time to ride this year I will be a happy man!!!!

I had the bike tuned yesterday with the HD Tuner. it came in at 136/150. While I am happy with the EPA tuned numbers, this bike runs HOTTTTTT. I will be changing either to the Power Vision or the T-Max real soon.

Which clutch are people using that isn't a beast to pull in?
