need help-how do i get 3 motorcycles in small spot?
« on: December 16, 2020, 11:54:58 PM »

So as recent "empty nesters" we are selling our large house out in the boonies with large garage and lots of space where I have each of my 3 motorcycles in a Cycle Shell and buying a very small house by the bay in San Diego with a very small 2 car (barely) garage. I will park my car outside but cant of course my wife will park her large SUV in the garage. I have seen over the years deals where you pull your bike onto it and in a chalk then bike will roll around? anyone have any suggestions?

Is the garage tall enough for a lift?  If so put the bikes above the SUV.

If not you might check out

Put center stands on the bikes and park them upright. Two bikes on side stands use as much room as three bikes on center stands.

Ship me the Maple. That will save you some room ;D ;D

I know the style of dolly you're talking about. I tried the cheap Harbor Freight one before and it wasn't pretty. Spend the money on quality ones if you do go that route.

Can you add 10 feet out from the back of the garage for a bike room or would that end up in the swimming pool?

I don't have center stands but when I do have multiple bikes in the garage (guests mostly) I use two Condor chocks to keep them upright.

For winter storage I tend to put my bike on a J&S Jack. On the jack I can move the bike anywhere I want in the garage. If the garage floor has a slope it will move on it's own if you don't use a wedge or use floor stops.

X2.  Get the bikes upright & off the jiffy stands, will save a lot of room.

This shows 3 bikes in what was a Mother-in-law's room option instead of a double deep garage option on one side of a 2 car garage. I installed a sliding double door set-up to the main 2 car garage and converted the room our motorcycle garage.  3 bikes fit well with the wheel chocks, although 2 of the bikes are not baggers I would think you could still get 3 HD's in this space which is the same size as 1/2 of a 2 car garage.

Damn Alan, you've got problems.....should have just bought a toy hauler!
You can bring one of those bikes over here to Tucson and leave it for when you visit!  I'm not to particular......any one is fine! :2vrolijk_21:

I don’t know the brand, but a buddy who downsized bought a lift that picks the bike up from the side and raises it up.  When the bike is raised up, the hood of his wife’s SUV fits under the bike.

Alan, the Condor Wheel Chocks are a great idea too! I have two for my trailer.

One thing to consider is that you live in Earthquake Country. While the quality bike lifts are sturdy enough when strapped down, as a fellow Californian I'd still feel better with my bike on the ground on a center stand or Condor Chock. And having the bike on the ground makes it easier to get out and ride, which we can do year round in SoCal!

I have an MC460 Motorcycle Dolly for storing, detailing and working on the bike.   I love it but you have to first raise it on a jack but then it's easy to move around...

Believe me, if I was retired there would be only 2 bikes in there at once! I took 60 days off between jobs a year and a half ago and rode 58 of those days, absolutely had a blast! All my work week is a countdown to getting on a bike..

I use the Wheeldock on my lift and in my trailer Alan, they can be used free standing on any level floor and you can just roll in or out of them with very little effort.

No Alan, I have replaced mine with the Wheeldock which can be used unsecured to anything because there is no apex to overcome going in or out of it therefore there is no reason to secure it on the garage floor, unless you choose to, just roll in and step on the release and step off the bike. Done.

This is it. I have one also and love it. No hump to go over or back out of. Ride in, hit the foot pedal and the clamp comes up. Stand on the arm to lower the clamp and roll back out. Easy peasy.

I also use the Wheeldock, for a bit more security I remove the rubber plugs on the front bar and insert a 4' X 1 1/2" pipe.

I've had both the WheelDock and the Condor.  I like the WheelDock much better--no hump to get over.  Very stable and easy.

That Wheeldock looks great. Does it move when you ride it in? When you release it is it secure until you can get on the bike?

Anyone know if I buy 3 of the Wheel Docks can I arrange them in a single garage spot so I can get any of the bikes in and out without moving the others?
Just watched the video on the Wheel Dock and Im all in. Hoping I can just do them and not mess with the dolly's. If I cant arrange all 3 maybe I can do 2 on the dock and only have to do 1 on a dolly?

What if you ran a pipe thru all 3 , space them as needed than drill holes and use pins to keep them at the distance you want.

That Wheeldock looks great. Does it move when you ride it in? When you release it is it secure until you can get on the bike?

Won't move if you don't hammer into it. Ease in, you feel your tire against it, stop and hit the pedal. Done.

I leave mine in gear so it doesn't try to roll backwards. If you're on a slope at all, by all means your bike will want to naturally want to roll in that direction.

Would really need to know how much space you have to work with. If you can put all three side by side standing upright, then you're good.

No problem with either pulling in or pulling out.  My garage floor is level, so I leave it in neutral, but in gear is fine.

When riding in, just approach slowly, get bike straight in, then ease forward until most of the way in--kick the release lever, and the chock closes on the (back of) the front wheel.  This eases the bike all the way in, without moving the chock, and holds bike securely upright.  It also prevents bike from rolling forward or backward.  I then put down the kickstand just for the extra security (although I find it's not really necessary, and KS doesn't even touch ground; chock keeps bike upright and is very stable).

When I'm ready to leave, I hold the handlebar just for extra security, step on the chock's holding bar to release it (to allow rearward motion of bike, although it's still held upright by chock and kickstand), then mount up and put KS up.  Again, these precautions are for extra security, but not really needed...WheelDock is very stable.

If you want to provide extra resistance to "sliding" of chock, a piece of rubber mat under the main support can help.

Doing the inspection tomorrow so will get exact measurements. No way to get all 3 side by side as my wifes medium sized SUV will park in there as well (unfortunately..).

garage is 210" wide by 226" long. Taped it off on Xmas and will put 2 in Wheeldock chalks straight in with chalk against back wall and 1 on Condor dolly where i can either ride that bike or roll that bike behind the one I am not riding and take other. Now just need to find a way to stop my wife from stacking "things" behind whatever bike is open..
Thanks all for the help!
New issue is garage in alley and when I start bike (all 3 crazy loud, 1=Boarzilla, 1 Fulsac header and Tab Zombies, even BMW has Remus headers and exhaust and almost as loud as the Harleys..) it will wake up everyone on both sides of that alley and I usually leave Sat and Sun mornings 6:30 to 7:30 so I will instantly become the horrible new neighbor!

Congrats on the new digs Alan. Sounds like a block party is in order to meet and "charm" all of your new neighbors. And then you can somewhat get away with being THAT neighbor. I've always been the loud neighbor wherever I've lived, what with my Harleys and Classic cars and my classic rock band that practices out in my shop. I realize that being in a cul de sac, like me, and living on or near the water in a super tight community are not the same but meeting as many neighbors as possible could definitely take the edge off, and hell you may even make a few car deals!!  :nixweiss:

Alan you're not in an HOA are you?  If so, you might want to check the CC&Rs for any motorcycle restrictions.  Should be OK since they're all street licensed but in Calif. you never know.

Starting a bike at that time should be fine.
I usually get out and fire up the snowblower at 6 am sometimes at 5:30 am when it's coming down hard. So if anyone has a problem tell them to just be happy they aren't my neighbors.
Besides motorcycle start up is just soothing music for the sole.
