A new HD for the garage
« on: February 23, 2021, 02:24:23 PM »

For better or worse, just ordered a new Pan American Special. Hopefully it will bridge the gap between a BMW GSA and spending 40k on a CVO. I now can wear my HD shirts, my airbag jacket and full face helmet.... all with one bike!!

If it doesn't, it will make a decent trade on another CVO!!

while you're waiting for it to come in, you can do some reading up on it at the harley sip site.  they now have it loaded and you can peruse the owner's manual.

https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/user/loginForm

congrats.  lot to be impressed with on this bike.

Thank you for the link. Time will tell if the bike will live up to the hype.

I don't ride the ways one would want to really take advantage of the (hoped for) capabilities of a bike like this and have not for a very long time.  Even so I've found this bike interesting. It's outside of HD's normal footprint so can't help but wonder how well their design and engineering efforts will play out.  Also don't hate the look.  It's a machine that piques my curiosity. Will look forward to what you share as you and the bike get more familiar with each other.

The bike supposedly will land in May. And I will definitely let the group know my thoughts. I have a real fear that this bike, no matter how well it works, will not scratch the itch I have for another M8 bike.  This could get expensive!!

Although I am keeping my current bikes including my CVO street glide; I am going to test ride a Pan American Special when they are available. I will likely purchase either a Pan American Special or BMW GSA to add to my bikes. For hard core dirt riding I trailer my Yamaha YZ250F to the single tracks or enduro.

The Pan American's 150 HP should scratch that itch pretty good!  ;D

I have had 4 BMW GSA bikes in the past. Great bikes, but the dealer network is poor. For example from my home in SE Minnesota to Billings, Montana there are 2 dealerships in a 1000 miles! Compare that to HD with multiple dealerships along the way. That and the fact my nearest BMW dealer is over 100 miles from me as compared to 25 miles for the HD dealership, weighed greatly in my decision to purchase the Pan American  rather than another GSA. Guess I will see if that was a wise decision.

Did the Pan American motor start with a blank sheet of paper or is it based upon the SE V-Rod motor , as it appears to resemble it and is the same displacement?

Sure looks good on paper.

From my understanding, it's a completely new engine, but I may be mistaken.

Dood.... hadn't seen that particular video yet.  For reasons that make no sense to how I use a motorcycle anymore I've got zero need for a bike like this.  But it interests me.  Maybe it's a 2nd (3rd ?) stage mid-life crisis.  But it interests me.

Maybe some dealer within range of me will put one in their rental fleet?  If so I'll go someplace and rent one of the damned things for a day or a weekend and get it out of my system.  Yeah, that's a plan.
