Barnett Scorpion Clutch Steel Plates
« on: March 05, 2021, 03:51:16 PM »

I have an older Barnett Scorpion Clutch for 98-06 BT.
608-30-10098.  With Two sets of clutch plates. The Instructions call for ten .051 steel plates. Problem is that there appears to be at least two different thickness that's obvious by looking, feeling and micrometer. On other clutches there's a thicker one at the hub and one at the pressure plate but the instructions doesn't say anything about it. Has anyone installed a Scorpion Clutch and have answers
that isn't available? Thanks

You can see the differences in the pics. The .051 are the thinner plates. They are all the same diameter with the same inside circumference and all the teeth are a perfect match on all plates?

My first dumb question:
Are you in the process of attempting to install them or are you just cleaning up the garage?
If you are doing an install (replacing Barnett for Barnett) compare and possible reuse the steels from the old clutch pack.
If you want to install (as is) find spec for installed height, match to old pack (take into account friction wear of old plates) install and insure you have proper disengagement before you fill with oil and seal her up.
Hope it go's well for you.

I plan to swap clutches from FXR4 V111 Scorpion clutch to Road King S&S V124 Baker 9 plate street clutch. The Baker Clutch with light spring is too weak
For motor, the race diaphragm spring has caused damage to my left thumb. There's no other springs to fit the Baker and there aren't any Variable Pressure Plates for it. So I was going to swap them out.

I have the scorpion in my RK - 167 hp, recommend you get the owner of Barnett (Mike) and have him send you the bigger first ring - mine was squealing and lurching until we changed it out.   Was easy to deal with but I couldn’t launch the bike with any power.  Now it’s great

I have a bigger 1st ring fiber plate that's in perfect condition as far as I can tell. I bought second set of plates years ago as spare and never used them yet.
Maybe you can answer another question for me.
I am wanting to buy a Barnett 84 tooth Clutch Basket
But I don't know what pinon gear it uses. A 9 or 10 tooth. EVO IND has a Clutch basket that's looks identical to the Barnett that uses a 10 tooth pinon.
My Baker 84 tooth uses a 9 tooth pinon gear. You would think that if both Clutch basket starter ring gears were 84 tooth they would use the same number of teeth on the pinon gears? Don't Figure!

ITank,

Sorry I cant recall if it is a 9 or 10 tooth, I do know I bought the larger strong ring gear and pinion gear.  Saved a lot of broken teeth along with the 1400 starter.

I was not referring to the plates behind the plates is a dampener spring there are 2 sizes of them the smaller didn’t hold the motor, took a while to figure out the cause so we used the one from the hydraulic clutch setup and that was the ticket.

Barnett was super in helping figure it out.  Originally they thought it was stack height, so they sent me a new clutch pack,  one launch with a little power and we knew we still had an issue so Mike said let’s try the larger Dampener,   2-3 days later we tore back into it and it’s been perfect since.

Hope you get yours squared away.
