Radio upgrade suggestions?
« on: June 25, 2021, 10:33:08 AM »

What systems (Aquatic, Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood, etc.) are preferred and truly plug and play?  This is for a 2007 Ultra Classic CVO.  Everything I've found seem to have fitment issues with either the amp not being compatible, extra unit needed for SiriusXM, and things like that.  Like many factory radios, my auxiliary port is shot, the sound is cutting out all the time (but the unit still has power) and can't he heard when I'm going 60-70 mph.  I'm looking for a replacement that won't break the bank, is a reasonable install, and is louder and clearer.  All advice is appreciated.

If you're wanting truly "plug and play" the stock radio is the only thing with exactly the same form factor and accessory connections.  Everything else will require some degree (a little or a lot) of replacement of other accessory (sat radio modules for example), mounting, wiring, etc.  Some not a lot but some quite a bit.

If you don't hate the stock radio but would like it more reliable you do have an option.  Send it to a place called Iron Cross (link below).  They can fix what you have, add some upgrades to the existing unit, and make it more robust and reliable.  They're at least worth a conversation.

Aquatic is a great solution on a 07 touring bike. I had the bt version on a 2010 cvo sg and a 2013 cvo rg. Plug and play, factory controls. Only downside on the earlier model was the display was hard to see in bright sunlight. Both sounded great!

Have only seen three of those radios in person so have to assume there are models I'm unaware of.  The one's I've seen, however, only had the standard or "stock" radio harness connector.  No accessory harness connector so the amps, sat radio module, or anything else that runs through the accessory harness couldn't work with them.  Had to go Aquatic or other aftermarket to remake the bike's audio system.

Sorry, dam autocorrect. There were only 2 models available when I used them. They have pretty good power right out of the box, however I used them both with arc audio amp back then.

The aquatic is a nice unit but you can't see a thing in the sun. For that reason I wouldn't consider it. I would probably do the iron cross thing with a sounds amp and speakers. Stuart.

SteveL - would you go as far to replace the inner faring to house a double-din radio?

https://fatheadcycles.com/products/sony-xav-ax7000-rockford-fairing-speaker-plug-play-bundle-w-metra-95-hdif-inner-fairing-99-13?_pos=2&_sid=54e1adff5&_ss=r

I did this myself a few months ago on my 2010 - I'd say it was plug/play - just a little tedious. I suggest adding an amp as well.
