Flush mount gas cap not popping up.
« on: July 16, 2021, 09:17:32 PM »

The gas cap on my 12 SERG has decided that it doesn't want to pop up on it's own after doing the 1/4 turn to release it.
It made for an interesting time at the gas station the other day.

I've got it off now and have put some sewing machine oil down the grooves on the inside of it. It slides up and down real easy and the 1/4 turn lock and unlock work great. The damn cap just doesn't want to pop up in it's own. With it off the bike I can pull it just a little and get it to pop but that doesn't work when on the bike due to the trim ring. This one is date stamped 3/17/15 so it's been replaced once already.

Anyone else run into this? I'm thinking it's time to replace it.

Tighten the screws, should fix the problem.

Open it. There should be two screws there. Maybe I'm not understanding your issue.

I don't see any screws anywhere on this.  :nixweiss:

This is a flush mount fuel cap that goes on the throttle side of the tank. You screw it in, push down on the top and then with your palm or fingers, give it a 1/4 turn so it locks down. Reverse the order to remove it. When you get that 1/4 turn done, the top should pop up so you can grab it and then unscrew the whole thing. It isn't popping up so I can grab it to turn it.

Ok. That's what I was doing last night. I'll play with it some more after work today.

My 17 FXSE does the exact same thing. Had the cap replaced under warranty. Same issue.

If the spring is still intact might try working in some light weight oil to where it will free up the plunger.  May have a lot of oxidation causing the issue.

I've been having a Hell of a time with the gas cap on my 2020 Road Glide. Especially frustrating during Iron Butt rides when you're trying to hurry  ;D

I'm looking into a few aftermarket companies. There are some where the very center of the cap pops up so you can get a grip and twist. Just want to make sure it's not a situation where I get what I pay for, because they don't cost much.

For what is worth, I found that using the palm of my hand to open the flush mount pop up gas cap was hit and miss, especially if you are in a rush or anyone is watching, lol! What I've found is using the index finger of each hand, placed 180* from each other around the periphery of the cap and pushing down equally seems to help it pop up every time. Works for me. anyway

Won't do any good. As you can see in the pix previously posted, it sticks closed even when not on the bike.

Mine works great when it’s not in the tank. I started to assume that my fuel tank has a bit of an issue at the filler.
Like I said before, the cap was replaced under warranty and nothing changed.

Picked up a new cap yesterday at the almost local dealer (closest dealer is now 40 minutes in any direction from me thanks to HD) and solved that problem. The edge of the cap is a little different from the old one but You'll never know because you'll never see them side by side.

Part number is 61100052A
