I like hops, I made a lot of IPA. I was experementing once and made a whisky barrel stout. In the old days they would ferment in any good container they could find. Some used old whisky barrels, the stout would pick up some of the oak and a slight whisky taste from the barrel. I made 5 gal, added some sterilized oak chips to the fermenter, and a cup of good whisky just before bottling. It came out really well if I do say so my self.

Hop shortage
« Reply #529 on: December 13, 2007, 10:41:37 AM »

just got this in an e-mail newsletter

World-Wide Hop Shortage

Attention Home-Brewers:

Hops are in short supply.

Prices have Doubled! :(

Availability of certain types of hops is extremely limited.

We are working to secure as much of this essential ingredient as possible. Please bear with us during this shortage.

There are many factors contributing to this shortage, and the resulating price increases:
Poor Crop Yield
Less Acreage devoted to hops
Increased Craft Brew Sales and Hop Usage
2 Major Hop Warehouse Fires
Weak US Dollar
What to expect:

Decreased availability
Price Increase (listed below)
Some varieties will be unavailable until at least December 2008.
Substitutions may be necessary.
Possible Purchasing Quantity Restrictions.
New Hop Prices are as follows:

Hop Pellets (1 oz.) = $3.25
Hop Pellets (16 oz.) = $40.00
Hop Leaf (1 oz.) = $3.95
Hop Leaf (16 oz.) = $45.00
Hop Plugs (1 oz.) = $4.95
What can I do during this shortage?

Please do not stock-pile hops.
Try to assess your specific hop needs.
Be flexible with the type of hops (pellets/plugs/leaf)
Be flexible with hop variety choices.
Contact us ASAP if you need a specific variety of hop.
Try some NEW Varieties of hops (coming soon!)
Grow your own hops (available this spring).
Relax, Don't Worry, Have a Home-Brew.
Thank you for your patience during this shortage.

Does that mean we will be seeing a price increase in beer (at store's) as well, or is that just a home brew thing?

might see an increase on micro brews, doubt it will effect a big volume beer

Neal,

Do you (or anyone else here) know if hops are difficult to grow?

Climate a factor, I suppose?

I started with Miller Lite, switched to Saranac (had alot of great flavors, including their version of a Belgian white ale). After sampling the Belgian White ale, I fell in heavy like...so I tried alot of other brands that made a version of it regularly, such as Spanish Peaks. I finally decided to get a kegerator, and have switched between Dominion Ale & Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Since i got a Dui in November (going to court next Thursday) I have been laying low, tail tucked between my legs...I'll take any prayers for a good outcome!  :(

Yea, despite what they say in their commercials, the big brewers don't use much hops in their beer, and from the taste their not that good either!!!!

Hops grow like weeds, I have several friends here in Colorado that grow them. just need a long trellis for them to grow on, they grow up to around 15'. Cut them back each fall and cover the cut off shoots with mulch.

Looked up a site on growing hops. The problem is getting variety, many beers use several types of hops. You can grow the hops you use the most, maybe trade with other people in your area growing different types, that's what my friends do.

I am never going to tell you that I do not drink.  I do not drink and drive. I make sure before I get into the hops, that there is enough to last the evening, then I don't leave home.  Maybe it is bit antisocial, but it is a lot safer.

Lots of luck in your court case.  Seems to me with what I've seen, the cost of the lawyer somewhat conincides with the outcome of the case.

Many of your local brew shops, or good plant nurseries should be able to get you plants, they usually come bare root. You won't get much the first year.
