Good luck.  I'm a home brewer too!  I have a knock off of Sam Adams Boston Lager that's dead on.  Let me know if you'd like a copy......

extract or All grain?

Boston Beer uses a decoction mash to get the extra malt flavor they are famous for, but a two step infusion works fine for me. The key to sucess of the beer is the strict use of only 100% Noble Hops.

10 gal batch

18-lbs pale two row malt
1-lbs 60l crystal
1/2-lbs vienna malt
1/2-lbs munich malt
1/2-lbs cara-pils malt

mash for 30 min @ 122 deg. (protein rest)
mash for 60 min @ 155 deg. (saccharification)

Bittering hops
2 oz leaf Tettnanger (4.5 % alpha) for 60 min boil

Flavor hops
1 oz leaf Hallertau Mittelfrüh for 30 min boil
1 oz leaf Hallertau Mittelfrüh for 15 min boil

2 Tsp. Irish moss for last 15 min boil

Aroma hops
1 oz leaf Tettnanger for  last 2 min of boil

Wyeast # 2206 Bavarian Lager yeast

Dry hop in secondary, 1/4 oz. Hallertau Mittelfrüh/5 gal

Hops grow like weeds, I have several friends here in Colorado that grow them. just need a long trellis for them to grow on, they grow up to around 15'. Cut them back each fall and cover the cut off shoots with mulch.

Looked up a site on growing hops. The problem is getting variety, many beers use several types of hops. You can grow the hops you use the most, maybe trade with other people in your area growing different types, that's what my friends do.

My sentiments exactly, a lot of work and your crop comes in all at once like tomatoes, so you need to pick, package and seal them to stay fresh for future use. Even with the inflated prices, Its still not worth the effort for me.

Thanks for the info on hops Talon & Eagle.

Reminds me somewhat of Italian restaurant owners that choose grow their own herbs or tomatoes, etc..  Lots of trouble, but you know what you are getting.

I started with Miller Lite, switched to Saranac (had alot of great flavors, including their version of a Belgian white ale). After sampling the Belgian White ale, I fell in heavy like...so I tried alot of other brands that made a version of it regularly, such as Spanish Peaks. I finally decided to get a kegerator, and have switched between Dominion Ale & Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Since i got a Dui in November (going to court next Thursday) I have been laying low, tail tucked between my legs...I'll take any prayers for a good outcome!  :(

Will offer up a prayer for your outcome in that case.

Several friends/family have been through that ordeal - generally not described as pleasant. Laying low is a good strategy, considering.

I talked to one of my friends last night, he said that his Mt. Hood hops had a few buds the second year, but really took three years to get a half decent crop. He uses his wife's food vacuum sealer to package them after they dry, gets almost all the air out.

The Value of a Drink

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink
I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes
and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their
dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
~ Jack Handy

And saving t he best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers.
One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to
his buddy Norm.
Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast
as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and
weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is
good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the
whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the
slowest b rain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain
cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.
In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells,
making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always
feel smarter after a few beers."

WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering
when you are not
