My bike doesn't have either, but I know a little about CD's and MP3's.  If you are burning your own CD's or MP3 songs onto a CD, the software you use may give you the ability to adjust the recording volume.  Not all songs are recorded at the same volume and there can be quite a variance between songs if you burn your own.  Some software will equalize volume levels across songs as well.

I use iTunes from Apple (works with a Mac or a PC) and use it to burn CD's and MP3 discs, as well as downloading songs to my ipods.  If you don't already have an iPod, I would strongly recommend one to you.  You can put ALL of your music on it and then just plug it in to your bike's audio system.  It just doesn't get any better than that!

Tony;
I believe you are using the handlebar mount HD version. There is an A-B switch on the back of the unit. You need to move the switch to the A position as it comes set at the factory in the B position. This will increase the sound output of the unit.

On mine I also added a low level line driver to bring the signal up a bit more as the output was still lower than the CD's.

Do tell Jim, where can one of these little gems be found?

This is the one that I have:

http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/PAC_TURBO_1_LINE_DRIVER_FOR_RCA_p_4930.html

While searching for the above unit I also found this one that looks to be a good product:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/PERPLD10
