talked with HB again at about 7;15 and the tow truck was there after the melon. I understood him to say that they were headed to a harley shop with it and there was a motel right beside it where they will spend the night. All is well with barry, a few knots and bruises.

hey TCinVA,  this website is awesome. Just like a family. The melon I think has a dented tank, busted fairing, bent sidebag and nonfunctional inst panel. This coming from on sight inspection from HB. Youre right this can all be fixed :2vrolijk_21:

I am not real sure what happened with DA and his wreck. Him and his bike are supposed to have been picked up today around noon. He will probably post up when he gets home. Have not talked to any of them today.

Just got off the phone with Barry. He may have a cracked rib and he has some swelling in his wrist. Otherwise he's fine. I think his pride is hurt more than his body. We were exiting off the interstate onto one of the old cloverleave type exits. He wasn't doing over 35 MPH or so. The rear tire slid and the bike went into a wobble back and forth and tried to go straight. He said all of a sudden he had absolutely no control over it. The rear tire is slick and it's no longer crowned, it's flat across the bottom. I've seen Barry ride and he's as good of a rider as I've seen. BAD TIRE.

CHANGE WORN TIRES before you have a problem.(deepsouth eagle? You reading this?) If you see one of your brothers with a slick tire, make sure he gets a new one! Barry's a great guy, an excellant rider, We all wanna see him around to ride for years to come.

This photo shows he's ok. He had to ride bitch with Don (TwoLaneRider) to get to the motel. He was gracious enough to grab a girl's bandana and jump on for the photo Op.

Man, hate to hear about Barry going down, but hope the injuries are not too bad.  Sounds like he needs to have that wrist x-rayed as well...could be a hairline fracture.  The main thing is he is up and walking around.  Hope the bike gets repaired/replaced to his satisfaction.

Well all,

I am home and showered and the bike is at the shop. Got banged pretty good.
Wrist and rib bad...the rest just aches. Going to have someone I know xray it monday...
but I dont think its broke.

Brain...I will take you up on the offer...thanks...your a good man. I will pm you with number when I feel better. Its taking awhile to type this.

To all who want to know what happened. It just perplexes me how this could have happened. After a fun filled day of high speed curves I loose it at normal, to lower than speeds just exiting on a off ramp. My tire tread was getting low but after a day on the road, it just disapeared, after the accident we noticed the tire was bald.(Iwill never run a tire this low agian!) As I was exiting...and just getting ready to accelerate a little bit into the curve the ass end just slid out of know where and jumped back quickly into a tank slapper and nothing seem to correct it. I was just going to have to go straight and find a place to land. Landing was unsuccessful...but since I wasnt going that fast... I am alive to talk about it. If the tire did this fifteen minutes before on the big sweep on the parkway...I wouldnt be here typing. I have been riding my whole life and other than a few dirt bikes and mini bikes trashed when I was a kid and one little fender ding on a bike in college...this is my first biker down...and hopefully my last. Thanks to all who posted. Me and the bike will survive. I pray this will never happen to any of you who read this. Check your tires!!! I am sore and going to rest.

Thanks,
Barry

DisAir, sorry to read that you took a spill but was glad ;D to read that your came out with minimal damage.  :2vrolijk_21: Heal up and know that you're not the only one of us to run a tire too long and drop a scooter because of it.  I just took my rear tire off the huckleberry with 15,550 miles on it.....now, that's just stupid at my age.  We've all gotta ride smarter.  ;) spyder

Hey  DeepSouthEag, didn't mean to hijack this thread, but I've always run what came on the bike...the Dunlop MU85.......last two have given over 15K.  That's 5K more than I was getting w/ the older Dunlops.  The 'new and improved' variety.  :huepfenlol2: har!  spyder

Barry, so glad to see the post and thanks for posing on Don's bike too.

He's been looking for a date ever since he left the pizza girl with Scot in Cripple Creek.

Seriously though, hope your recovery comes along quickly, the rib and wrist will heal and the bike can be repaired.  We just can't replace you, so it was truly fortunate to happen at low speed and not have been more serious.

Get well soon, Rog

Barry, I am glad to hear you are not to badly injured. I guess what happened to you will make other riders take a look at their tires and replace them. So Thanks for being honest and telling us all what the cause was. I wish you the best for a total and speedy recovery.

Barry, so glad to see the post and thanks for posing on Don's bike too.

The funny thing is, It was just a pose. He wasn't actually even riding with Don at the time. He caught a ride in the Harley guy's truck. BUT, we already had the cameras out and he graciously agreed to pose on Don's bike for us. He wasn't hurt too badly, so we decided to lighten things up about the whole incident. Barry was a great sport for letting us take that shot riding bitch, wearing a girl's bandana. Some of us did raise an eyebrow when he said he really like the Chubby's. The handlebars, the handlebars!

Handlebars my ass!  We rode back and forth dinner after that.  That boy is handsy!

Actually while there are no real benefits to bending a bike I guess you take what you can from any experience.  After we got his green bike out of the ditch I rode it about 4 miles up the road to a McDonalds and he rode my red bike.  His stock handlebars are bent just a little on the left side.  Not bad.  But they'll need to be replaced.  While riding mine Barry got to discover that he really preferred those Wild1 Chubby 575 bars.  So now while parts are being collected for replacement that Watermelon bike will get a set of bars that will make its rider more comfortable and will make it look better.

Candy, it's of course too early to know for sure how the Watermelon will come out of this unfortunate spring hibernation.  But it could experience some Steve Austin (we have the technology, we can rebuilt it, better than before) improvements if its proud papa chooses to take advantage of the down time waiting for paint.

The current bent and broken shiny bits are of course unfortunate.  But I rode the bike and it tracks straight and feels fine going down the road.  So am not concerned about anything that won't bolt on or repair to get it going again.

Along with looking so sweet with the new paint it'll come out with though Barry was very keen on the idea of dark green cylinders and heads with diamond cut, he got to experience our Wild1 575 handlebars and he got to see the effect of that Traxxion Dynamics front end work.  As unfortunate as the slide was if he chooses to a few weeks down the road Barry might come out with the sweetest Watermelon any of us have ever seen.

Barry, if you can relax a little without your bike for a few weeks and the results could indeed be dark green cylinder heads and diamond cut too, I'd let that wrist and rib heal real well.  I remember when we first got the road king, it had a little dump which resulted in a dented gas tank, too bad to ride till painted parts came in.  It had us without bike from July through November at that time.  But honestly, Jamey had some bruises and missing skin patches that were just getting to that healed point at same time.  Funny, things take the time they take for reasons none of can figure.  But going with the flow can result in improvements, so it sounds like you have some great opportunity in this cloud lined with silver.  Still, sorry to hear about the pain.   :cherry:

I like Hoist's idea. Have a new tire put on. Order all the painted parts. Duct tape the scratches and dents, and ride on. If you want it to look better, spray paint the duct tape with watermelon paint. No way I'd not ride it for 3 months. I'd ride my bike if it was painted with primer.

You have a very nice bike that will get better soon. An incident like this just gives the bike a little character.

Smiler, Watermelon is what we  call the green 06 SEUC Barry rides. Its that lime green/brown bike.

Ramp is an offramp from the interstate.

Thanks Fired00d, I understand that tyre tread may be the reason, in your opinion is it worth fitting TrueTrack, is there much  difference in the ride.

I have neither True-Trak or Ride Str8 so I can't say. Some that have had them have said they were the cure all, and others say they still have the instability problems.

John,

Had about 8.5 when we noticed low tread...about 600 miles later and the last time I checked...right after the wreck it was bald and not round...it was flat bottomed.

Barry, this is the second time I've heard about a rear going fast...once they get to a certain point, they must go quickly.  The main thing is that you are not hurt badly, and the bike sounds like it did not get permanently tweaked.  I'm sure that between your lovely wife, your beautiful daughter, your son, and those great dogs, you'll get plently of love and attention, so will mend quickly. :2vrolijk_21:

For all you kids in CVO Land, heed the warning! A WORN TIRE WEARS EXPONENTIONALLY! DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO GET EVERY LAST DROP OUT OF A TIRE!!! YOUR LIFE IS RIDING ON IT!  We all got $150 bucks and that's the cheapest bike insurance you can buy! I  DON'T WANT TO SEE ONE WORN TIRE IN HOT SPRINGS!  Riide safe, ride smart and ride hard my brothers and sisters! Hoist! 8)

Just remember, any tire that looks even half way close to Howie's or my head is too bald to ride on!

Thanks Fired00d, I understand that tyre tread may be the reason, in your opinion is it worth fitting TrueTrack, is there much  difference in the ride.

Smiler, I did the Traxxion, True Track and rear shocks all at once.  The Traxxion is a huge upgrade along with the Progressives in the rear.  The true track firmed everything up as well.

All of the mods improve the ride and handling in my opinion.

Barry,

Just found this thread. Sorry to hear of your accident and the melon. I am so glad you are Ok, and not hurt too badly. What time did it happen? I left the group at about 2:30 PM in Beaver Dam, just after TNcBham.
You are in my prayers, and please if you need anything, you know I am only a few miles away. Just give me a call.

Wife made me go to the ER today. No broken bones. Had a few cracked ribs that had been healed that I didnt know about though. I have a high tolerance for pain. My wife knows that and thats why she made me go to the ER. I will see an othopedic friend tomorrow just to check out the wrist and hand...but all is good and will probably be riding long before the bike gets fixed.

All yalls posts have really made me feel a whole lot better. I can never thank yall enough.

Barry

Sure glad that you're O.K.  Not sure if I missed this thread or if it just shot to six pages real quick.

The two most important things on my bike are my tires and my brakes......everything else is secondary.  Also, as the tire wears down, the more it wears, the faster it wears.  So what looks like it may have another thousand miles left on it may only have a couple hundred miles on it in reality.  Not sure what, in the compound, makes it wear like that, but it does.  Of course speed or twisties would only accelerate that wear.

Had about 8.5 when we noticed low tread...about 600 miles later and the last time I checked...right after the wreck it was bald and not round...it was flat bottomed.

Thanks for posting this info Barry, missed it when skimming this thread the last time. I had the same kind of instance with the stock tires when leaving MV last year had about 7.5k on my seeg, I remember checking the back tire thinking I would have to get a new one seeing the tread gettin low but expected to have plenty after gettin home. I even remember looking at all the bikes that had changed to the elite 3's thinking I could shoe-horn a 160 in there. I was totaly bagged up running hard back home to Chi-town when getting home the back 402 was totaly bald getting my attention.

Forgot to add that I had no burn outs on this bike, and yes the air pressure at max.

It's not a question of the tire's compound somehow being softer closer to core as opposed to out on the tread JC.  At least not appreciably so to account for accelerated wear.  Biggest thing is that the tire just gets hotter.

Deep tread allows a channel for air flow.  Air flow is cooling.  Once tread gets very low or nonexistent you've got much greater surface area of the tire in direct contact or nearly direct contact with the pavement.  That'll make the tire run hotter.  That'll make it wear faster.

I'm sorry Don but I'm not buying your theory of the tread or lack of changing the tires ability of keeping it cool. My opinion is that because of the load verses the size of the tires on these bikes load causes a heat build up especially on a long ride when bagged up like on the trips we take. I do know that the compound on a tire can be changed by heating it up and cooling it down from my racing days, heck you've seen cup cars scrub in tires to get them set for the race haven't you. I believe that by running these tires like we do over and over again we actually make the surface softer causing the tire to wear more quickly as they get older, add to that the tire gets harder due to less rubber being there causing a handling problem like were discussing here. When I got back from my last long ride I couldn't believe after feeling both tires how hot that back tire was getting, I now run my back tire at maximum pressure on long trips. Maybe I'm out to lunch here but please comment if you have more accurate info.

Roy, it's not the only thing but it does factor in.  And it's not my theory.  Came from a structrual dynamacist teaching a class I took from Goodyear several years ago.  It's by no means the only factor.  But it is a compounding (pardon the pun) factor that then impacts on everything else that's going on.

Not trying to totally discredit your explanation as a possibility because I believe I could be wrong but I also remember Nascar trying rain tires (with tread) about a decade ago having a problem with the tires getting too hot. It's so funny how everyone has a different analysis of a situation that there is no clear cut answer.

Too true.  Here I'm just guessing and basing it on no one's instruction.  But I'd wonder how much of an apples to oranges comparison we'd be making with tires designed for the track in comparision to tires designed for the street?

Those are significantly different compounds with significantly different properties.  Ability to handle heat, just how soft they are, and a variety of other things are all much different.  That structural dynamics class I sat through was really bent toward street applications as it was spooling me up for some testimony to be given later.

Hopefully the company guy wasn't spinning the company line too hard.  Some independent verification later of the main points of his discussion suggested he wasn't.  But when you're being tutored on things beyond your own background it always pays to check it out a little  ::) .

If he were still a member here, I do believe he would have the answer.  Not that we could read to the end of the post to figure it all out, but he would have the answer.   :D

Definitely a blast from the past MrsWe.  He'd have explained, cut and pasted 17 sources detailing it, remotely planned the Canada ride and tightened the whole thread's lug nuts for good measure.  You suppose he's still out there in the hills someplace curled up behind a scope?

Barry,
I just saw this post and am glad you're not badly damaged. Sux to have your bike down coming into riding season but I know you'll use the time wisely (planning what iteration of the melon you'll bring to life). I was questioning how much longer I was going to leave my aging rear tire on the scoot... you gave me the answer. Thanks.  :2vrolijk_21:

Barry, just saw the thread and sorry about your mishap but so very glad you are OK.  Take care of that melon buddy.  Ain't that many out there and as you know I killed one last year in MV.  No fun and not something to be repeated.

The bike is replaceable. How did your X-rays go?

So, while your recovering are you looking for a back up bike? ;)

Painted parts fairing and inner fairing. front fender and tank. One rear saddlebag.

Xrays say nothing broke. MRI of wrist to check ligements on Friday. I am
actually getting better and stronger every day.

Brother has Ultra with 95" and headwork. Can use anytime. The wrist may take few
weeks though.

It looks worse than it is.

The longest wait will be the painted parts...I have been fighting to get the fairing and bags replaced a second time as they got milky. It will now get done. While I wait I will send the forks to traxxion dynamics for overhaul and go ahead and have the six speed put in. Since the bars are bent I will go ahead with the chubby wild 1 575 handlebars...as I like the way they felt when I rode Dons bike.(no wise cracks!) Have a few other plans since it will sit in the shop waiting.

Sounds like a great suite of upgrades to get accomplished during the down time Barry.  Not only will it come home without the milky paint it'll come home being an even better riding bike.  Significantly so actually.  You're going to be looking forward to this homecoming as much as you did when it came home new the first time.

I'm home right now after an operation and have my bike in the shop with a trans oil leak, its fixed and I can't even drive (according to the doctor and my wife) so I can't pick up the bike and its killing me so I know where your comming from. Oh yea dumb me my second bike is apart so I guess I'll catch up on these boards.

Roy, your wife can get your bike home from the shop, right?  Or a buddy, then you can rest easy knowing it is safe in your garage.

Hope you are on the bend from your operation, follow the Dr's orders now.  And the wife's too.

So one bike at the shop, but fixed, one bike tore apart and you are not healthy enough to ride anyway.  Looks like we get to see a lot of you, and that is a good thing, right?

Fine bike Barry.  And it still rode perfectly straight out of the ditch and the four miles up to McDonalds.  In fact if we'd have known the darned wrecker was going to take as long as it did I'd have willingly ridden it on over to the dealership.  That green bike is going to be just fine.

Roy....

Roy,

  What were your racing days?

Scott

Scott,
Here I go again taking the thread astray sorry Barry/Hoist.

“My racing days” was I guess a statement taking in all my experience from racing, maybe not an accurate statement as you guys are not going to know me from seeing me on tv but I have to look at all the involvement I have had in my work job and all the money time I spent on racing.

My first job working at a large Mobile service station / Goodyear dealer gave me quite a bit of info on tires and how to interpret failed condition, we moved a lot of tires in those days and I knew tires. Being from Tinley Park and having friends with the Bettenhausen family I was kind of in the loop of what was going on at Indy when it was going on, you didn’t see that stuff on TV back then. I would also would go to stock car races when it was usac, you could go to a race at Michigan to see the twin 200 that was 200 miles of indy cars and 200 miles of 426-428 ci stock cars, those cars would take your breath away. I would go with these guys in the mobile home and they knew what was going on, I was just a kid back then.

I raced dirt bikes as a kid
“  “       Snowmobiles getting pretty serious drag and snow pro but not professional
“  “        Hobby stock  dirt and asphalt (amateur)
“  “        demo derby  (obviously amateur)
“  “        Drag racing from bracket to Pro Gas  (you could call it amateur ask Otis)

Being a mechanic I got most of what I know today as far as making things go fast and last in drag racing. The pro gas car was a 850hp 1970 Challenger and I miss that car and those days. I pretty much leaned how to spend every dime I had getting the motor to run then doing the work myself instead of paying the machine shops. At that time they didn’t have schools for that.

I even helped a friend take his 58 ft sportfish with twin 1080hp diesels from Chicago to Lauderdale and back 12 times, let me tell you the way we ran that boat it was like the hardest racing I’ve ever done

These days I work at a Peterbilt dealership and still have contact reading tire condition, new problems with the super single tires some of these guys run.

Not to get too far off topic of my “racing days” I wanted to sum it up by saying my experience early on at the Mobile/Goodyear dealer going to the races over the years and reading tires from the various racing I did has given me an understanding that is what I would say is hands on experience. I have also seen quite a bit of data from engineers over the years on explanations of why tires fail and both give what I think is a good understanding.

This is the best way I could explain my experience……..Roy

Thanks Barry,

The pain really came on yesterday and I don't even remember a lot of what was going on with my thinking.

Your really a good guy Barry and seeing Jen on this forum the other day brought me back to seeing you guys on your watermelon last year at MV. Keep yourself busy with the mods and fixes on the bike while your wrist is healing. I guess I will be seeing you hear while your healing like me.

Barry, you sound better already! I just got to read this whole episode, and I'm really glad you are OK. The watermelon will be better'n new, and everything's turning out fine.
What's really freaky :nervous: ... just at the time you had your mishap, I was looking at my own rear tire (11,500 miles) and got nervous. The few little trips we took before I got them (F & R) replaced, I swear the bike felt skittish... or was it my imagination?  I put Metzler 880s on, and the ride is so much different that it doesn't seem like the same bike.

Heal fast and good, Bro!
