A member of our HOG chapter was riding with the local CMA group last week. It was a group of 10, she was in the back. They were all sitting at a stoplight at the bottom of a hill when an 18-wheeler crested the hill. He didn't know there was a stoplight at the bottom, and tried the brakes. The road was 4-lane, and he was coming up behind them in the left lane, the group being in the right. Anyway, the truck jacknifed, and the 52,000lb piece of equipment that only had 3 SMALL chains holding it on, broke loose and came skidding down the road. It hit her, pinning her underneath. As it slid down the road her leg was pinned, then it came to rest against a curb. She was face down on the pavement, but concious. As she looked down the road, she could see the trail she had left behind (extremely graphic, you get the idea).....she thought it was her insides on the road, and kept saying she was going to die.
Well, the group circled her and kept her talking during the 45 minutes it took to get the crane and get the equipment off of her. They life-flighted her out, and obviously had to amputate her right leg. She is finally out of ICU, and doing pretty good. She is already talking about the next ride, and our chapter has set up a fund for her.
I just think its great that despite what happened, she is ready to get back in the saddle ASAP. She is a seasoned rider, and an inspiration.
