Opinions please!
« on: July 04, 2007, 02:49:25 PM »

Having become increasingly dissatisfied with the built-in GPS on my CUSE2, and knowing the fondness many of you have for devices like the Garmin Zumo, I'm considering, with an acquaintance who is an electronics engineer, going into production of a device that will allow a GPS/Radar detector with an audio output to connect into the HD Audio system ('06-on type).  It will mute the audio you are listening to, give you the message in your headset/through your fairing speakers, and return the audio to normal thereafter.  In that respect it will be far and away superior to the AUX socket!   It will be a proper, discrete device, mounted out of sight, and all you'll see will be a (probably fairing mounted) jack into which you'd plug the audio-out of your GPS or Radar detector. You will still be able to listen to your radio/CD/XM/MP3 player unlike just playing MP3s of the card in the Zumo (or whatever) through the AUX input.

Can I ask:

1)  how interested would you be in such a device (ignoring cost for the moment), and

2) (now not ignoring cost!) what sort of figure you'd expect to pay for it?

Thanks for your input, everyone!

Jim, I saw this earlier yesterday, but didn't respond, because I have no use for any of the devices for which a capability like the one you describe would be used..........at this point in my life.  Then I saw your post in the FLHTCUSE section, and figured I'd at least add some data that hopefully you can meld into information.  So, to answer your first question, at this point in my life, I'm not interested.  As for #2.......surely that must be rhetorical.  It's difficult to gage what you need to recover R&D, System Design and Development, Low Rate Initial Production and an ultimate full tool-up to mass production.............so, considering that all of that is not being considered, then there is no more rhetoric.  For a simple circuit board, harness and jack, no more than $20.00.

Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks Reggab.  It'll be a bit more sophisticated than that though, and we're just trying to gauge how spohisticated it should be.

It is a bit difficult to gage what one feels something is worth, without knowing all the logistics processes involved in the effort.  I gleaned the data I could fron your initial post, formed it into the best information I could, and arrived at what I thought would be a fair price......without considering your need to recover all the costs of development.  I think you're on the right track tho'...........and I'd also expect to see a price considerably higher than the one I listed.............but with the data you provided, and the information I formed from that data, my case analysis yields a pretty low figure.....but there are many holes yet to be filled.

I wish you much success with your endeavor.

Jim,

I use my Garmin Zumo very often. The one thing I don't like is having to wear an earpiece to hear the audio. I would much prefer the sound to come through my fairing speakers.
So yes, I would be interested. Cost???? Really not sure.

We're considering just how "clever" to make it at the moment, which will impact the cost, hence the question.  is the audio output on the Zumo just a 3.5mm jack?

Jim,

Check out Cell Set. I think they offer a line of units similar to what you are talking about. Maybe you can get some of the information you are looking for by reviewing their offerings. They look like the only game in town for this stuff, so having competing products would be good for everyone, except Cell Set that is.

Thanks Chief.  I used a Cellset gizmo on my 03 bike, and it worked fine. However, it was very complex - modular, and you had a fair amount of wiring to do yourself - and expensive. MUCH more expensive than the device we plan.  The main thing is, though, that they have no plans to produce a device for the '06 on HK audio system.

Jim,

I wasn't aware they weren't going after the HK market. Actually, I remember a post a few months back when one member was having trouble interfacing the Zumo into the HK and his solution involved a chain of Cell Set products. I never saw anything else about that. I couldn't find that thread searching either.

I hope you come up with a more economical solution than the Cell Set as I looked into them for my GPS, but it was cost prohibitive, so I guess I would be interested in a device to hook my Garmin in at a price point substantially less than Cell Set's price.

Does that help?

Yes, thanks Chief.  We'd hope that it will be very substantially less, and much simpler to install, than Cellset's price.

We were considering making the device increase volume with speed, but I doubt that's necessary?  My TomTom has that feature already, so am I correct in assuming the Garmin range does too?

I don't know. I haven't ever used the audio out of my 2610 for obvious reasons.  ;D

Jim,

I wasn't aware they weren't going after the HK market.

When I asked him about the HK audio, when I got my first one he said they had no plans to develop a device for that, but looking at the site now, I see they have introduced this device: http://www.cellset.com/multigps.html  which it says is suitable for '06 on HD systems - I must be stupid though, because I can't work out from that page what you need or how much it costs!  :nixweiss:

Hello Jim,
I had heard that a device like that was available through J & M.... for the Goldwing.  It was an interface that put it all together.  Perhaps J & M might have some insight, before the wheel gets reinvented.  I am interested.

Lots of Goldwing stuff around, Ron - not so much for Harleys though, and less for '06 on Harleys! Cellset stuff has always been mainly for wings, too.

Cheers,

I don't think the Garmins do that Jim. I have had my 2610 for a couple of years now and am not aware of that facility. Not sure about the new Zumo though.

Have read trhough the tech spec on the Garmin website and it doesn't mention anything about the Zumo having the facility either.

Anyone else know different ??

To my knowledge there is no Auto Volume Control on the Zumo. Since I have mines hooked up to my radio via the Aux plug and the radio itself has the AVC then it takes care of ambient noise levels.

I don't have it in hand at the moment, but the 2820 does have a setting for automatic volume control relative to speed...I would assume the Zumo does as well.  I can't even remember how I got there on the screen, but the option is there.

Equons...I'm not real clear on what you are trying to accomplish here.  I have an additional AUX input on the back of my HK radio (thanks to hd-dude) with the 3.5mm stereo output jack from my 2820 fed into that jack instead of the one on the front of the unit.  Voice commands can come through my J&M headsets or through the speakers, depending on Switch position.  With HK in AUX mode, voice commands from the Garmin, and music from it's MP3 player feed through the AUX input.  Voice commands override the MP3 when needed.  I'm sure I'm missing something in what you're talking about doing here, so enlighten me further, please.

What there is a market for, IMO, is something to integrate, with STEREO output, the Bluetooth capability that comes with the new Garmin units (both listening and talking), a good quality set of helmet speakers (don't have to be Bose, but at least as good as J&M's....better would be better), a good microphone, and make it all work without being tethered to the bike with a cord to the helmet.  For both rider and passenger.

Make something that will do that, and I'd pay good money for it, particularly if the headsets were high quality, at least approaching the level of home type units.  I very rarely listen to music or Garmin voice commands through the bike's speakers any longer.  But, I wear a Nolan full face 98% of the time, as does my passenger.

Thanks for that - what your missing is that I want to overcome the shortcomings of connecting the audio input via the AUX socket; i.e. you do that, and it's byebye to radio/CD/XM listening.  I want to be able to have my music come from ANY source, and STILL hear the GPS voice commands.

Yes, my PDA has GPS, and Bluetooth too - but on an Ultra (or a CUSE) you aren't going to be using a bluetooth headset, are you?

Thanks for that - what your missing is that I want to overcome the shortcomings of connecting the audio input via the AUX socket; i.e. you do that, and it's byebye to radio/CD/XM listening.  I want to be able to have my music come from ANY source, and STILL hear the GPS voice commands.

If that could be done, it would be a nice feature to have.

We're pretty certain it can be done, without too much difficulty.  :)

Yes, my PDA has GPS, and Bluetooth too - but on an Ultra (or a CUSE) you aren't going to be using a bluetooth headset, are you?

I'm on a SEEG, not an Ultra

I know!  As you don't have the HK radio this doesn't apply to you anyhow, but wouldn't you like to be able to ride without the bluetooth headset?

Don't use the GPS too often, since any road is a good one on the bike.  The few times that I do use it, the bluetooth is okay and it saves a bunch of money.

You make a system that would allow my GPS and radar to interupt the audio output, I WANT ONE!!!

I would be interested in a system that would allow my GPS and radar to interrupt the audio output.
