Possible FREE Garmin GPS Updates
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:04:35 PM »

For those of you with a Garmin GPS you may be eligible for FREE Updates not only for the unit software but also Software for navigation.

If you go to www.Garmin.com then upper right you will see a section called MY Garmin. Click on that and follow the instructions to be a registered person. You will need the GPS info such as Serial number and registration code for your Navigation software (such as City Navigator NT North America v7) That's usually on a small yellow piece of paper that came with the disc.
The website had a 2008 update for the City Navigator for $69.99 but once I registered my serial number for my Garmin 2720 they said I could order this update for free!

Maybe this system will work for you too.

Sorry didn't see other post. I wonder though if the decision to send the software for free has more to do with the number of updates you have asked for in the past vs. date purchased. I was using v7 since 04/06 and have not asked for an update until now.

Hmm, that is odd. When I went there this morning just to check I was so surprised when it said it was going to be free I just start clicking the next button. In the thread I mentioned in my previous post a member here that has had his Zumo since February wasn't eligible. Odd that you've been using a version since 04/06 and was able to receive a free update. That is longer then any of the criteria that any of us knew about (6 mos - 1 year) to receive free update. This is the first time I'd used that procedure for an update, but you would think unless you actually got an update to City Navigator it would allow you to get it one time free. :nixweiss: Since the other member just purchased his in February this would have been the first update available for City Navigator.

I was wondering if everyone was looking at the same location for the update. When I went to my garmin there was a link (in the left column of the page under my garmin services)for the free update. I also noticed that on the far right side there was a link to map updates. I clicked on the left link and requested the free update. Later after reading the preceding emails I went back to my garmin and the link to the free update in the left column of the main page was gone. I clicked on the link on the right and it indicated that obtaining the update here would cost $. I bought my zumo in July. Everyone might want to just double check and see if they have a link in the left column of their my garmin page. Good luck.

To add to that, those that aren't seeing the free update on the left it might be because you clicked on the "update" on the right first and it put a cookie on your computer. You may want to try to clean/delete cookies and try again. Not saying this is going to work, but it may be the reason that the "free update" isn't showing. :nixweiss: As mentioned in the post I quoted I no longer see the free update.

I guess time will tell on this offer. I posted this info on a Chevrolet Avalanche site also and someone there said they got the free disc but Garmin wanted $70 for the unlocking code.
I will let you know what happens when and if I get the disc.

If anyone is interested, I've got the DVD and you can have it.

If you want to get the DVD for free, call Garmin 1-800-800-1020 and talk to one of the cust serv reps. You can get the DVD for free, but will probably have to pay $75 to unlock it. They've been doing it this way for several years now.

That's a bunch of bull chit if I ever heard it. For them to say it is "Free" then say you have to pay for the unlock code how the heck can it be "Free" then? Can you use it w/o it being unlocked. :sauer005:

Chip,
I understand that, and used to keep my tank full so I could get the remaining two. ;) However if you say something is "Free" I expect it to be "Free" and able to use it. From all the high reports I've heard from Garmin I wouldn't expect that from them. :nixweiss: Also why would after you do the "Free" upgrade and then go back and click on updates it showing a cost just to get the CD. It's confusing, but time will tell if things are on the up and up. :confused5:

Gary,
I think yours will be free.  They have changed things from the way they've handled it in the past.
On my past updates, the CD was free but you had to pay for an unlock when you got it.  It looks like now, you pay for the CD/DVD update up front or it's free if you qualify.
