05 FatBoy Tear Drop Air Cleaner Insert
« on: February 14, 2005, 09:09:45 PM »

I bought a tear drop air cleaner for my SERK thinking I could buy the "103" insert that comes on the '05 SEFB.  But the MOCO won't sell it to anyone unless you have the bike.  Mine is an 03 SERK, but no deal.  Does anyone have one they want to sell or know of another insert or medallion or something that I could use in place of the stock insert that comes with it.  The stock insert that comes with the tear drop air cleaner just doesn't set it off.  I've been looking and so far haven't found anything that will fit it.  I may have to just make something.
 Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve [smiley=confused5.gif]

Found this coin replica that's solid silver so I silver soldered it to a piece and mounted it.  I think it looks better than stock, plus it's removable.  Not a very good picture but looks pretty good.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I made another insert out of a Skull belt buckle, which is round and just the right size for the air cleaner.  My wife prefers the skull, but I still like the coin since it's a little more unique.

Here's a pic of it on the bike.  The pic doesn' t due it justice, it really looks pretty good.  Although I still prefer the silver coin.

The local dealer has the belt buckle.  You have to cut off the parts that stick out from the back.  I used a dremel tool with a cutting saw blade.  Then I attached a blind nut with JB Weld and attached it with a stud replacing the original bolt.
The coin I mounted, I silver soldered it to the nut, but the belt buckle is made of material that melts at a very low temperature so I wasn' t able to solder it.  Maybe someone with more experience could.   The way it's made, even if the buckle part were to fall off, the blind nut will still hold the cover in place.  But it seems solid enough that I think it will last forever.  Then you just tighten it by hand.  I got some very thin washers ( or machinery bushings) and use them for spacers to make it appear vertical when fully tightened.
I'll try to take another picture tomorrow of the back of them and post so you can see how I did it.  You might think of a better way, also.
