Locking fuel tank cover - Locking gas cap
« on: February 20, 2005, 06:18:38 PM »

My bike does not have any way to lock the fuel tank console door.  I have tried to find a locking gas cap.  Harley does not make a locking gas cap for the SEEG.  They only sell a locking fuel tank console door release part number 53842-00B.  Which can be opened and locked with any barrel key.  I would like to have a little more secure way to lock my tank than to have a lock that any barrel key can open.  Does any body have any ideas on how to make our fuel tanks more secure??   [smiley=confused5.gif]

Have the lock in the locking cover rekeyed by a locksmith to match your ignition key.

DJW Thanks for that info.  I will buy and try the Harley self-locking gas cap.  I will let you know if it fits.  Thanks again for the info, I don't know what I would do without this site.  It's great!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

A buddy of mine north of Kansas City has a locking gas inside the cover on his Ultra.  It was some third party part and not an OE item but that wouldn't make any difference.   You still know it can work ok.

Oddly I opted for less security on the red bike.  When the bike got here one of the pieces I'd already picked up was that little push button with the key lock in it mentioned in a prior post here.  Didn't like it.  That button was LITTLE and it didn't really lock anything anyway (since any key would work).  On top of that I didn't like the way it looked compared to the big shiny button.  So I put the big shiny button back on.  Don likes big shiny buttons  [smiley=7.gif]

I was at Biketoberfest  last year when my fuel door button failed.
That was,, at the gas station needing gas.
Couldn't open fuel door.
Had to use the knife to pry open the door.
Not something you want to do on a 03 Classic.
But I had no choice.
Hard to look good pushing a dresser [smiley=nervous.gif]

Rode rest of week with a hole in the door where lock use to be.
Got home, put stock lock back on.
No locking gas cap for me!

JCZ

I agree! It's a good question.

Have never locked my gas cap.
Even with the push button on the 03 I could lock it but never did.

Maybe I'm to gulliable, but have never felt the need.

DJW, you were 100% correct about the Harley locking gas cap 62803-97A.  It fits great and the best part is that it looks great as well.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
The only time that I have any reason to worry about my bike is when I can't see it.  I'm not concerned when I know that it is parked in a safe place.
Sorry, but with 25 years in law enforcement.  I really don't need to explain why you need to lock your bike, car, boat or house.  People do the stranges things sometimes for no good reason.  That's why I will be safe now  [smiley=blush.gif] instead or being sorry  [smiley=cry2.gif] later.
