Bushtec Roadstar paint work complete
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:48:20 AM »

I was a slut this weekend in Hot Springs.  And not even a cheap one.  Pulled the new (to me) trailer for the first time. Just to see what it was like as much as anything else.  All the advice from those that had been there before was much appreciated over the weekend.

Had a few weeks ago got it painted to color match the light red on the bike.  And it looked good.  No complaints at all really.

Then at the Hot Springs event saw a painter working who had done some work for me before and who I'd seen many times around the country.  Pitched my general idea to him of a nice simple way to finish connecting the look of the bike and the trailer.  He said, sounds good, couple hundred bucks.  I said "sounds good, I'll go get the trailer."

Of course actually looking at it he had good ideas to extend my initial, basic, frugal idea.  And as he did I kicked my hind leg log a dog who is getting "the spot" scratched just right.  So $200 became $400.  But I like what he did.  With the Screamin bird engraving in the forks already, and the air cleaner cover and the shifter the work continues the them from front to rear very well.  His color match of the gold and the orange are dead on too.

Sorry for showing off a bit here.  But I really like how it ended up.

That's not bragging, it's sharing.  Isn't that what this site is for?

That looks fantastic and you've raised the bar for the rest of us on the fence regarding trailers.  Congratulations.  I hope you get many miles of smiles from that rig.  I think it's time to quit your job and go find yourself on a 7,000 mile trip.

Thanks guys.  Really appreciate it.  I don't get any credit for this last bit of work of course.  That's all Joey Hutson working at the rally site.  He really did do a nice job.  He convinced me his idea would work and show up better than what I'd originally thought of and he was right.

Left to my own devices I'd have had just the eagle head with a bit of flamed tail done in solid in the dark red from the bike and have that outlined by a thin orange pinstripe.  Joey told me they'd not highlight well one from the other.  A bit of paint dabbed on for illustration showed he was right.

Then went on to sketching out this Plan B and adding the text in the gold color from the bike and adding the striping on the lid to pick up the work on the top surfaces of the bike.  All done I'm really pleased with the guy's work.  Glad there's audience among our gang of friends that also likes a little bird infested trailer.

I doubt it Chuck.  If the work were on any forward facing areas would do it without a second though.  Prior experience with other work on other non-forward facing surfaces has always suggested that keeping it well waxed is satisfactory.

We didn't have a dew that first night so I was able to leave it uncovered.  That helped it cure and a heavy dew left to just set on it could have been bad.  It made the trip home without a mark on it.  Though I have to admit I took a rag with a spot of stripper on it and took off the artist's signature in that tiny little spot he'd done it.  After it sets for another week or so I'll give it a couple of good coats of wax and it should be good to go.

I really appreciated having you behind me on the trip down Travis.  I had no idea what that thing would act like back there.  Getting your input as to what it was actually doing or not doing was very helpful.

On the way back I even pointed the mirrors down so I could watch the trailer's wheels and started playing around seeing how close to the white lines or shoulder I could run the bike without pushing the trailer over the edge.  Was an interesting experience having it behind me.

Was nice being able to easily carry far more than I'd ever need for four days.  Don't think I'll have it behind me for anything other than at least long weekend road trips.  But I am beginning to understand now how nice it will be to have the option.  Hey, just having the space to so easily haul other people's pick up items a couple of times was pretty handy.

Thanks Don.  I'm pleased with the final outcome also.  The painting work really wasn't bad at all; especially the first part.

A local body shop whose work I'm familiar with did the solid color paint work.  I had a used set of lowers and their caps that were scuffed that I'd scored on eBay for next to nothing.  Also had that Street Glide rear fender light part.  They painted the trailer, the lowers and the rear light all for $500.00.  They sprayed the base and six coats of color to get the color match.  Couple coats of clear on top.  The color match is dead on in any lighting condition.

The striping/graphics work cost almost as much.  For just over two hours work that $400 was a lot pricier than the $500 for the original paint work.  But it's a custom painter at a rally event.  So what are you gonna do :nixweiss: ?

The custom guy did make a brown paper stencil to story board the design we'd sketched.  So eash side is as identical as such work could be.  My first suggestion was the bird heads with about 3/4 the lenght of tail they currently have.  And that was it.  Just to pick up the engraved bird heads on the bike and the shift linkage and carry it back to tie to the two together.

That he'd have done for $200.  Once he saw the trailer itself though he started the "well, we can do just that, but it'd look better if we did this too, and some of that, and a little up here."  By the time he was done I was scratching fleas and panting and the price had gone from two to four hundred.  He did do a nice job though.  And I'm real pleased with the results.  So I'm not complaining.

Dang it Don, you done cause me to want to get my Bushtec painted to match my 08 CUSE3.  Just wish I could come out that cheap with work that good.  Very nice.

Milford

Just have to decide to go for it and pull the trigger.  FWIW it was a LOT cheaper to get just a single color paint job done to the trailer and then let the striper have his way with it for couple of hours than it would have been to have a custom painter actually paint the trailer to truly match the bike.

A future potential side benefit is that while the trailer does visually mate to the bike now it is not so absolutely matched to it that it could not be sold to anyone else with a red Harley.  A couple of hours elbow grease with some thinner and a rag could even get the new work off if it needed to be more generic.

He did do a nice job though.  And I'm real pleased with the results.  So I'm not complaining.

Yeah.....  It's just a thing with me.  I don't like dealer name plates on my cars.  And I don't like artist's signatures in pinstriping or other graphics work on a vehicle.  Once it's on my vehicle/bike/trailer/whatever it's there for the purpose of adorning the vehicle not recognizing his efforts.

Most of them, Joey here included, don't even ask first.  They just put their name on your stuff.  It just annoys me.  So I take it off.  Then I'm not annoyed anymore :drink: .

Where did you get the replacement low profile taillights for your roadstar?

Those were an aftermarket lens that used to be relatively popular.  Was called "Aurora."  They fit the 1973-1998 bikes; which just happened to be the light that the Roadstar trailer used.  I thought the more angular look of the Aurora light was a much better fit with the shape of the Roadstar trailer.

thanks a lot for that.
I installed Kuryakyn smoked LED laydown lights on mine, as well as changing the turn signals out to the 86-90 style chrome fitting so I could use smoked lens with a "Superbright" Red LED light bulb.

My bike has all smoked LED taillights, including tourpak,  (Harley) so I did my best to match the trailer up...

Don,
Good post and pictures!  It's nice to know someone else can do a good job without having to go back to Bushtec for it.  They quoted me $1500 minimum over 4 years ago to repaint mine, and I balked at that.  Now that I have the new RGU, the colors are close enough that I can spend the money on other goodies!
Congrats.  It looks great!

These trailers really are simple beasts.  Nice little suspension setup.  But even that is easy to work on after the fact and rest is just a tub and a little wiring.  So no reason we can't get all over these things any way we want to and without having to spend a ton of money doing it.

Seeing this old thread come back has had me thinking today just how much I prefer the Roadstar over the other models.  It's smaller (volume) than the others.  But it still has a ton of room for most any road trip.  It's shape and lines, at least to my eye, just look so much better behind a Harley than do the other models though.

Thought about it so much today while doing other things almost have myself talked in to selling the one I've got now and starting to watch for a good deal on a Roadstar again.  This website is just dangerous that way sometimes....  Too many wallet-attacking-ideas come from the brethren....  ::)

Can anyone advise if they took the fenders off on the Bushtec Roadstar trailer for painting, or just left them on.
I am having a roadstar trailer color matched to my 2016 CVO Limited, and I think it would make more sense to take the fenders off for paining. Any help would be be great!!

When I talked to Bushtec, they took everything off, including all weatherstripping and 'chrome' strips.  They said when they put it back together that they would use all new strips for it, but that was like ... 5 years ago or so?
If a third party did it, who can say?

Thanks very much.
I was inquiring because I did not know whether Bushtec "glued" the fender to the body as well as bolt them.

I am picking up a '94 Turbo II in a few weeks.....and will be doing the paint thing with it. I ordered 14' of new rubber seal....and the painters I have talked to said the chrome trim is generic enough to source here. I am going with one color....most likely....maybe 2....but, to get the ghost flames matched ...don't think that's gonna happen. Seeing that transformation from not matching ....to.....matching .........Re-enforces my desire to paint it!

On my Turbo +II the fenders are part of the body, as they are on the Roadstars.  They are molded into the fiberglass so are neither glued nor bolted on. My Turbo+II is from '07, though, so I don't know if they've changed things since then, but I don't think so.

Well I  took the fenders off as I thought.... They are not molded to the body but rather bolted on with some silicon on the inside. Mine is A 2006 so they may have changed the build process since then. I will forward the progress pictures and the final color match when it is complete. By the by my bike is the palladium silver and charcoal slate color limited.
