I usually carry a 45 as well, but having to deal with the larger frame, weight and on going concealment issues, I'm definitely looking at something smaller.  The 357 is close to a 9 ballistically.  My biggest problem with the 9 is it's over penetration/ricochet abilities.  It definitely likes to skip and go through things.  A 45 will blow a hole out the backside, but essentaily it's done at that point, assuming you're hitting COM and not extremeties.  The 9 is much easier to carry and something the size of a rohrbaugh would be really easy to carry, I just worry about collateral damage.  Since we expect to be firing at close to zero ranges, maybe the ricochet component is reduced, but the over penetration isn't.  I guess I've got to play some more with some jhp's to see what the latest are doing.

Of course, carrying something is much better than nothing at all.  It shouldn't be too often the BG's are going to give you problems in the middle of a crowd. ;)

i prefer a .40SW, maybe a .45
we all know the 9mm has a bad rep for stopping power...   some earned some not..
a recent example...  NYSP is finally dumping the 9 for a 45...
its all about personal preference....i just dont trust the 9
on the other hand...  even my compact .40 is friggin heavy...  so its a trade off
even a 9 or a .380 carried  is better than the .45 sitting at home cuz its too heavy
hows that for a mixed message?

IMO, there is not really any appreciable difference between the .40 and the 9mm.

The .45, now you're talking.  Plenty of stopping power, however I think sometimes quantity is better than quality.  My 9mm has 18 round clips and can be easily concealed, where as with most .45's you are looking at 6 rounds.  The .45 is best if you can be cool under fire and are a crack shot (everytime).  For me, in such a situation, I would like to have a few more rounds in the magazine, just in case.

You are right, it is personal preference.  I would like to have a .45 that is as compact and light as a 9mm or .40 and with the magazine capacity of my 9mm, but thus far have not found that gun.

I have an assortment from .45, .44 & .357, 9's, .40 & .380 all the way down to a .25 derringer.  They all have their pro's & con's.

Yep, I've got several long guns as well.

Kinda getting into the antique variety now.

I like my S&W K66 stainless .357.  4" barrel, pacmyer grips, and with hollow points will cause a little bit of damage to "watermellons".

Here's an interesting take on the 9 vs 45 dilemma.  See this site: http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/9mm%20vs%2045.htm.  It is good reading.  I did some further research on some aspects of this and feel that what ever somebody is comfortable shooting is what is best for them.  Premium ammo may be the real factor, not so much the caliber.  The cost of ammo needs to be considered as well.  9 is pretty cheap, 45 is a little higher, while 357 is higher still for the better stuff.

Two in the chest and one in the forehead pretty well negates what caliber it may be.

i use to carry a glock 26 9mm, just recently went to a springfield sub compact 40 cal. big difference in knockdown power imo. the difference in grain size of the lead will make you a believer. but where does it end. a 50 cal.... :coolblue:

i operate a business that requires me to carry or lay down.

How did you like the Glock? I'm thinking of one as a backup (ankle carry).

Yea it is a great weapon for close in self defense. I'd be a little concerned of the collateral damage if I had to use it for something of greater distance.

You know D00d, I don't understand our gun laws at all.  If you have a sawed-off .410 that's too short, it is so illigal that you do hard time just for possession of it.  Yet, that pistol is even more concealable (while not really small) and I'm guessing is legal classified as a handgun.  What are they retailing for money-wise?    :nixweiss:spyder
