OCC BlueLinx Bike
« on: March 09, 2005, 11:21:48 AM »

My brother is a branch manager for BlueLinx Corporation, formerly Georgia Pacific Lumber.  They had OCC build a theme bike for them; attached is a photo...look at the airbrush detail on the primary cover.  It won't be on the Discovery Channel though...he said that it would have cost the company an additional $500k to have the build featured as a TV show!

Nothing really "themed" about that one in the hardware fabrication though.  Really just a not unconventional looking but attractive chopper with some company specific paint work going on.

Guess the real question is....why would anyone hire OCC to build anything?

The way I see it, $500k for an hour of TV time is pretty cheap now days. My neighbor is the Finance VP for Beazer Homes and they just spent well in excess of $1 million on a home for the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. And Beazer's name wasn't mentioned nearly as much as those companies on OCC. If your product fits the demographics of those watching the show, I think it would be $500k VERY well spent. My .02.

My only consideration there would be the targeted (or not) demographics.  I remember a bike for Snap On and another for Miller Electric.  Ok, tool users are generally gear heads.  And they might be watching a show on motorcycles or motorcycle fabrication.  But I just recently got what was apparently the final episode of a build themed for the Lincoln truck.  Is a Lincoln Continental buyer (generally) going to be a bike nut?

Never studied the demographics on such things so I really don't know the answer to the question.  It just seems that while some may in fact be a really good fit (and advertising well spent at least moderately effectively) some others are just out of their nut or are there simply for the fun of it (not that there is anything wrong with that).

In my opinion, their bikes are way overpriced.  They paid $120k for this one, and as Twolane pointed out, it's not much more than a fairly nice chopper with a themed paint job...I just don't see $120k, obviously somebody does.

The only reason they can get these prices is because of reality TV. Where would they be if someone didn't take a chance on airing a grown man acting like a spoiled idiot who cusses alot and builds cool bikes? They would be like thousands of other bike builders just building cool bikes to make a decent living.
They were out here last year at a bike rally at the casinos. There was a line like you see at disneyland to recieve an autograph T shirt for $30 a pop. Some people waited in line for a couple hours! Not me!
I will say I do enjoy seeing them build the bikes and I love Mikey, he makes me laugh. But rest assure SR. is going to go off atleast once a show and that is just what it is.... SHOW!
So now you have a grown man acting like a spoiled idiot who is now a Multi Millionaire and can ask what ever he wants and justifies it because of his fame and popularity.

Yea, their bikes are over-priced, but as long as they have customers they will probly get price-ier (is that a word?) They are making all they can while they can..I say more power to them..I would much rather have a bike that is more comfortable to ride...this old body doesn't like hardtails any more...hell I thought I was nuts to spend over 30 Large for my SEEG. Now I wish I had 2 like some of you lucky people. [smiley=laugh.gif]

I like the blue powder coat on the motor , was thinking of doing that to mine if I go up to 95".  I was about to take off the other day when a woman walked by my ride and asked me if it was an OCC bike , I just replied "no M'am , this is the Real Thing , a genuine Harley Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations bike , made by skilled craftsmen not loudmouth jerks"
