putting to bed for the winter 08 SERK-question on storage
« on: November 05, 2007, 11:40:30 AM »

Unfortunately I have to put my new FLHRSE4 to bed for the winter. Just running out of weather. I'm all set on basic storage procedure but my question is can I leave the SYN 3 in all 3 holes with 97mi on the odometer until spring when I do a complete fluid change or should I change all fluids now before I put it to bed this year and still do a fluid change in the spring? I'm going over to M1 v twinn in the crank, F+ in the primary and M1 75w90 synthetic gear in the tranny same as I run in my 07 Dyna now. Advice ?

I'd leave it as is.  Lots of bikes sitting in showrooms for longer with a few miles on them.  If your last few rides have been really short that it didn't get up to full temp then MAYBE I'd get it heated up before putting it away.  You'll be changing it pretty soon for the first service when spring comes; it would be a waste to do it now and again so soon after.

It's always better to put her to bed with clean oil but I wouldn't consider 97 miles dirty oil.

I'm taking mine to the local dealer where they have inside storage for 250 bikes.  I have a list of service items for them also (IDS install, 5K service etc).

Is it common in cold weather states to have a dealer with storage capacity and service orders? I have never heard of that before; sounds like a good business practice for slow winter sales and busy service days, making the service end produce revenue year long like the shops out here in California.

Yeah it's a nice idea.  They're even discounting parts 15%.  They secure the bikes to a pallet and place them in a racking system.  I give them a call a few days before I want to pick it up and they put the charged battery back in.  It's $150 for the season.  I'll drop it off within the next week or so.  We've got a few inches of snow on the ground right now.  It's not a lot of fun riding in that kind of cold.  I'll pick it up late March or early April.

I just keep mine full of gas,  and don't stop riding till they start layin down the salt.
put my older bikes on a battery tender,  but won't start using one on the 07 til next year.
I never change the oils before putting them to bed.  but do it first thing in the spring.,, never had any problems.

Hey Harleyteam,
I took mine to Stan's HD yesterday (Batavia).  It rained the whole way there and was 40 degrees.  I asked if they could do a showroom detail on it before they put it away after service (IDS, 5k checkup, rear tire, inspection).  They said yes.  I was glad to hear that the road salt wouldn't be on it for 5 months.  They need three days notice to have it ready for me in the spring.  I needed more room in the garage.

can't get my pickup in my garage if I tried,,, so it just holds Harleys.  mine is not in bed yet.  going to use it Tuesday, for an escort of the soldier from Tonawanda. taking off work to stand honor guard at his funral on sheridan dr., then escort to cemetary. with 2 from this area gettin killed in Iraq last week,  the Patriot Guard are being spread real thin Mon. and Tues.  both services are basically at the same time, only 15 miles apart.

oooops sorry :jack:
