King and CVO tourpak rear view comparison
« on: December 04, 2007, 02:24:51 PM »

This was discussed in another thread, don't remember which one. Anyway, Don and I were throwing ideas back and forth as to what to use to cover up all the real estate back there.

King.

The white mark below the lid is the result of having a flag on the tourpak for 3500 miles  :-[

That sucks. :( I was always concerned about those flags on tourpaks and saddlebags. Thanks for the visual warning and assuring me my concern was valid.

This is one of the things I appreciate most about the crowd of people here and the things we enjoy doing to the bikes.  Identical bikes to start with.  Both silly enough to buy a second tour pak.  Both with the same problems; covering the holes for an antenna we both chose to lose and both not liking the big open field on the rear of the paks.  Same parts.  Same problems.  Same questions.  Same solutions?

Nope.  Not a chance :huepfenlol2: .

I'd covered the antenna holes with painted to match buttons or fillers of different sorts also.  My work was never quite as neat as Duane's and never quite as satisfactory.  Just about the time I was ready to finally just fill and smooth the holes and paint the surface I remembered the little stick shown here.  Filled a bit more space with a different emblem (in a different place).

On the King pak I'd tried the same emblem in the same place as the chopped pak, also used some conchos to break up the large field.  It's just a big open space that needs to be broken up.  After those few evolutions was finally satisfied with this.

The buttons I used are actually stainless carriage bolts. I chucked them in a drill and hit the grinder to clean them up. The a little "wet or dri" in the sink and the drill some more to make a nice smooth surface. I then used the CVO touch up paint to  ----- paint them.
They actually look much better in person then in the picture. If the pak ever needs to be painted for any reason, then they will  be filled and done right.

My original idea - using the little "pasties" that came on the tourpak spoiler - these were used to cover up the screw holes when in the paint shop.

I guess I should add what I did with the screws (1/4" carriage bolts).
They were cut down to 1/2" and I used 1/4" washers on the inside with acorn nuts (all stainless).
On the bigger of the 2 holes I used a piece of rubber tubing to keep the screw centered in the hole.

I tried pasties on the King Pak as a way to fill the big empty space.  The look wasn't even too bad.  Couldn't leave them on the bike though.  Mrs.We kept playing them :huepfenlol2: !

It's true.  Embarassing to admit.  But it's true.  The bike was a handfull when the tassles were on there.  The money was good.  But anytime you rode by a brass pole the bike tried to pull off the road!
