Headset adapter for earbuds
« on: January 04, 2008, 02:39:08 PM »

Anyone know of an adapter to connect earbuds to our headset connection?  I would like to connect a set of earbuds instead of the headset, but I can't find an adapter.   :nixweiss:

The correct link is www.bigearinc.com

They were at the Bike Show last week, and are coming out with a fitted ear plug Bluetooth version too. Should work with the Zumo. ;)

If you can solder the tiny little wires in the buds, it wouldn't be too difficult to connect the wires to a DIN plug and make your own.

I wear a 1/2 helmet, and didnt like the sound quality of the stock HD headsets. I purchased a real good pair of Sony, noise canceling in-the-ear headphones, and modified my MoCo system by cutting off the speakers, and installing a female jack to accomodate the Sony headphones. It blocks out a lot of wind and road noise while giving me excellent sound qualities. I can use the CB, MP3 player, XM radio, Intercom with very positive results. This type of mod may not be for all, but it serves and satifies my needs...

Hows the sound?  I was working on an earbud solution when I saw your post.  Use the same setup, and it sounds great except for no bass.  I think it's the radio, because when I use the same earbuds direct from my ipod, it sounds great.

Thanks for all of the replies. Aerostitch has exactly what I wanted for less than $20.00.  Bigear had a similar adapter at the motorcycle show, only they wanted $65.00 and I had to order it  :o

I understand how these will accommodate the ear bud for audio but that will leave you without the ability to transmit, right.....or am I missing something? :nixweiss:

I still am not clear exactly what Shriner did.  In the pic I see the mic and what looks like a female connector.  I am slow obviously.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I think he did this:

cut the leads to the helmet speakers where they leave the piece that clips to helmet and where the boom for the mic is attached (and cable to the console attaches)

bought a female stereo plug from Radio shack and attached speaker leads to jack.

the male ear buds then plug into the jack.

You can open up the microphone mount (5 screws) and remove the headset wires (un solder).
Then you simply solder the wires for the female 1/8" stereo jack in their place.
This way you can just plug in any earphones and away you go!

I have used this system for awhile and it works great.
Put your earphones in your ears, pull on your helmet and plug in the earphone jack and then plug your microphone cord into the intercom plug on the dash.

Now if we could only get a "cooler looking" microphone and/or a cordless set up, we would be stylin'!!
My BSR and a few non FD buddies tell me I look funny with that dorky thing stuck to my helmet........

Brad, I hate to tell you but I boogered up my headset!  There was so much silicone inside that when opening the case too much damage happened.  Those tiny wires are fragile when simply confirms what a cheap headset HD supplies with the bike.  Anyway after unsoldering what I could salvage it's not worth trying to reconnect all those little wires.  So I am on a different search to accommodate a half or 3/4 helmet.  I tried on a modular Nolan today but could not stand the enclosure.....too damn uncomfortable for me.  The best I might do is with a 3/4 helmet but I still will probably stay with the half helmet carbon fiber I have....so light and comfy.  I would rather have that than any music or conversation!!!!  :cherry:

J&M has a new headset for half helmets.  I haven't tried it yet, but J&M is quality stuff.  Also, the mike is smaller, so you do look like you are a pilot on the Space Shuttle.  :P

You're still going to have to modify it yourself...J&M won't do it for liability reasons...I already asked them.  However, my job is in the aviation field and I think I can get it done.  Our flight helmets are set up exactly the way you want your helmet to be.

He said that the BMW lower is coming out first - but perhaps if enough people were interested (group buy anyone?)  we could get him to expedite an order.

Now all this would be great if only it were bluetooth w/streaming stereo.
And a dongle on the console to receive.
I would be interested with that setup. :2vrolijk_21:

J&M Needs to offer an adaptor which would connect between the lower section and the upper section to allow the ear buds to plug in.  Then it would work with any of their cordsets regardless of which make of motorcycle it was for.  Then hopefully it would be considerably cheaper than $99.99!  Oh well, just typical of the prices we pay for accessories for our bikes.....got to have one anyway no matter what the price!  :-\

I called J&M this morning, they have nothing out yet that will work.  What was cited above is 6 Pin and we need a 7 Pin according to them so, back to the starting point.
