Topic: Stupid Black Thing on Rear Fender (Read 13093 times)

Does anyone know how this stupid black thing (picture accompanying) on the rear fender just below the license plate is attached or adhered? It's not part of the stud that comes from the fender through the rear brace (already tried that) so I'm guessing Harley took an "adhesive approach" to this ugly little thing. Was just hoping someone had already been there and done that before I tried just ripping it off. Just about anything else will have to look better back there then that Stupid Black Thing on the Rear Fender.

I think, don't have one in the garage to verify, but the B&B and the O&B both had a real pretty V emblem there, but slightly higher. I thought that our tags half covered that. Gotta go look. Yes, that is it. On the 04 SEEGs they did not have a luggage rack and their tag sits higher and this is a pretty emblem. We with the 05 SEEGs get a piece of black plastic that holds our tags. Why am I telling you this, you know what it does. You are asking how to remove it. I would think that hot hair dryer trick, but what will you do for holding your tag on. Do you have a replacement? If you are reffering to the round black thingy,,,,on my bike, the license plate hangs down and just almost touches it. With the vibration back there, it probably just keeps the license plate from touching the paint.

OK, Again hanging head down, shuffling feet in dirt. Why would I ever even try to answer a question and especially one who has so proven his worth in the garage as a mechanic. Duh, sorry. I ran out again and looked. You are so right, tmo465. I thought that round plastic tab actually held the bottom of my tag. Of course, It does not. Sorry, I will just exit stage left here and let you real mechanics talk. Since this does not involve peel and stick, I got nothing to add to this thread.

Don, yeah that thing is just a sticker. I took the emblem off of an old road king classic windshield bag and put it back there with double sided tape. It looks a lt like the emblem on the 2004 seeg, ie: lots better.

I am sure you already put the old small thin screwdriver back there and tried to get it to release a little.

Some people swear by the use of a hair dryer to warm up the doublesided sticky tape under the SUBTOF before removal. I just used a piece of dental floss and slowly worked it down by moving it side to side. There was just a little residue remaining and you can use an adhesive remover. They can be picked up at your local pharmacy or Home Depot the most common one I think is Goo be gone or something like that. I just used an isopropyl alcohol pad and it removed the residue fine, washed fender and waxed it.

That was it exactly Mike. Once Mobe had confirmed it was ok to force it I just got behind it with a piece of fishing line and cleaned off the residue with alcohol. 90 second job.

The SUBTOTF was of course being used to cover the stud that goes through the rear brace. If anyone ever wants to remove their SUBTOTF in the futre here's what's underneath.

Here it is a little closer to show the detail of the piece Iron Braids offers should anyone be so inclined. Only thing I'll really have to pay attention to now is keeping a good coat of wax on the rear fender and back of the King tour pak. That would have have been done anyway. But even more important now as the braids swinging in the breeze might eventually abrade the painted surface if left to rub on bare paint.

Then here's what a pair of them do disrupt that large blank field that is the back of the King tour pak. The chopped pak is really fine and doesn't need the help. But the King pak is just really big and really bare.

To kind of complete the theme I got a pair of levers from Iron Braids as well that use black for the tie offs at the end and the same burgundy and tan colors for the braiding. The burgundy matches one of the red shades on the bike very well, the tan complements the gold and the black ties in the seat. Plus they're just a little more comfortable and a little less vibratory to have your hands laying on for hours at a time.

iv'e always used WD-40 to remove adhesive/ road tar/ gum/ and try it on anything i

Please don't hate me because I have an 04 without SUBTOFT.

I actually ended up just leaving off the entire lower section of the licence plate bracket and the RBBB along with it. I've got the chrome ring around the license plate and with it, the plate itself and the upper frame section all bolted together there is not nearly enough flex there for any part of the lower section of frame or plate to come close to touching the bike.

On mine the lower half of the license frame protruded below the plate just a bit. Wasn't really a problem but for some reason it annoyed me. Now it looks a bit cleaner. The only way anything would ever touch down there is if someone is pushing the bike by hand by pushing on the bottom half of the license plate.

Y'know something else just realized that her targeting skills illustrated. That old axiom about look where you're going and not at what you're trying to avoid. Because you'll go where you're looking.

She probably saw you in front of her. Focused like a laser beam on your back fender thinking all the while "don't hit it don't hit it don't hit it." And then drove to exactly the point she was looking at.

I know it's not at all funny. And it's good you're taking it as you are. But I'm just really glad (for you and for her and for both bikes) that she didn't try to drive a foot farther than she did.

(And, just for the record, I'm guessing she was cute. After all, a guy would get a lot crankier if someone ugly hit him [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] )

No, the thread was SBTORF becuase Stupid Ugly Black Thing on The Fender didn't fit. But the part isn't a SBTORF it's a SUBTOTF. Geez, you're gonna confuse people and they'll end up ripping off the wrong Stupid Black Thing (SBT)

I just realized why I now absolutely love the concho that went on the red bike in place of the SUBTOTF. It's because it's not a concho but a tassle. Like the "professionals" wear standing on the street in the French Quarter. One of most amazing feats of bodily control I ever saw was a lady who could make her tassles counter-rotate. No, they are different, the rk has H-D above the V, the SEEG has the bar and shield. There r some pics on pg 4 of this thread.

If it turns out to be put on with some kind of stick-em, it may be easily removed like
you would remove the funny bicycle reflectors they put on the forks.
Try this trick, it has always worked for me.
Get some of the waxed dental floss, and anchor each end to something you can
hold on to. You want to do this to keep it from digging into your hands.
Start it on the upper edge of the thing-a-ma- bob and pull it down with a sawing motion.
It will separate the adhesive from the paint without causing any damage.
Just use rubbing alcohol to clean off any residue.
My bike came in this week, and I am gonna get rid of that POS as soon as I start to detail it.

Checked this out when I went to see my seeg at the dealer this week. It is the anchor point for the bag mounts. They could have probably come up with a better set up, but that covering the bolt everthing connects to
