Do I need to order any additional mounting hardware to install unit onto bike?

Stock handlebar mount sucks - most all of them from what I have seen.  This company makes the best mounts: http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=browse_search&mount=bar

Not sure what size your handlebars are.

I just happen to have this cheat sheet for when someone asks the above...

Check out this thread - Standard GPS or Garmin - implementation starting at reply #11. You will find a list of all the parts that others and myself have used. I ordered my Techmount from them directly, used the Radio Shack power plug (but will replace it w/the one Terry found if ever needed), and I also got a cover to put on the face of the Zumo to prevent scratches from - Invisible Shield. Also check out this post - Zumo Tips/Tricks... this is a nice replacement security screw for the mount. The one that comes stock has this special screw/screwdriver that is a pain in the butt for us old guys. It is really small and hard to see. Both of the above threads have good information on parts, installation and tips/tricks for the Zumo.

Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars)

SOUND PROFESSIONALS - GOLD PLATED 3.5MM (1/8 INCH) RIGHT ANGLE STEREO PATCH CABLE (1 meter length)

Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (Plug Only)

The only other thing I did was went to a local fastener store w/the screws that hold the Zumo mount to the Techmount and got some shorter screws. You can see the difference in these two posts - stock screws and short screws.

Once you get the unit make sure you go to the following places to update and register your Zumo.

Product Registration

Web Updater (This will allow you to make sure your Zumo has the latest firmware)

MapSource software version 6.13.6 as of December 4, 2007

If you are going to be interested in loading POI's (Points Of Interest) you'll need this also - POI Loader for Windows software version 2.4.2 as of August 6, 2007.

Do I need to order any additional mounting hardware to install unit onto bike?

All of the mounting hardware will be in the 550 package. There is a motorcycle mount and also a 2nd mount for a vehicle. Some folks go with a different mount on the bike, but everything you need, Mount, related Ram hardware etc. is in the box.

Hope this helps

Here is the chart to compare Zumo 450 - 500 - 550..

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?compare=compare&compareProduct=414&compareProduct=8582&compareProduct=8583&cID=135

I am planning to get one. I don't need the Hands-free calling with Bluetooth® wireless technology because I am "allergic" to celular phones so I will go for the Zumo 450.

Would like some feed back from members that have this unit or other as well...

I would recommend, if you don't already use a GPS, get the Zumo 550, you will be very pleased.
It was designed for motorcycles and as you already found out there is a wealth of Zumo info on the net, I'm surprised Gary didn't list the Zumo forum.

It was mentioned above that the Techmounts were for the stock bars. Techmount has clamps for most of the size bars you could have.

There are other mounts out there too.

I use the Techmount, Ozzy uses a different type, can't think of the brand at the moment, but maybe he will chime in.

The supplied bar mount that comes with the Zumo doesn't belong on our bikes, it was made for a BMX or Goldwingy

Not sure why this unit came up to be your Navigation system of choice, but I would seriously consider either a Street Pilot 2820 or a Zumo over the Quest.

The HD unit uses the display of the HK radio (orange and Black) the Zumo has a much larger display and is in full color and you can map a route and save it. It is much more value for your $$$$ than the limted (WAY OVER PRICED) HD version.

VA missed the 2nd part of your question.

The Zumo is a far better and more user friendly unit then the HD unit, which you must attach to your fairing.

I believe you're speaking of the H-D Quest & Conquest (<- see the link for comparision) that can be mounted on the handlebars or w/a kit to the fairing. I'm also thinking that the Conquest was formerly known as the Quest 2. Here is a link from Garmin's site comparing the Quest - Quest 2 - Zumo 550. Maybe someone that has the Quest units can give you more specifics, but from what I've heard you will be better off getting the Zumo for the features that they have over the Quest units.

MG,
I have the HD Road Tech Quest.  As d00d stated you can mount it either on the handlebars or use the included cradle to dock in the optional mount that attaches to your fairing (which would require you to cut out a portion of your dash pad to install it).  I haven't used the Zumo, but I saw d00d's and if I were to buy one today, it would be the Zumo.  It has a much larger screen than the Quest and has more features.
