And then there were (FXR)3 . . .
« on: March 02, 2008, 12:32:00 AM »

Just got back a little while ago from picking up this '99 Blue Flame FXR3 in Fort Dodge, IA.  Got to meet and have lunch with site member "mandm1" who turned me on to the bike which belonged to his next door neighbor.  Both he and the bike's previous owner are stand-up folks and were a great deal of help throughout the process.  The bike was represented very well and the entire deal went like clock-work.  Thanks for making this happen, Blaine and Mike!

Also of great help was "hdfxr3."  This guy knows his FXRs and is a wealth of information.  Thanks, Dave!

So, to the bike . . . . . it has just under 6,700 miles on the clock.  It's in very good condition . . . better than my SERG when I got it last fall.  There is some extra do-dads and chrome on the bike, such as a Hypercharger, V&H pipes, chrome inner primary, chrome exhaust bracket, chrome lower cylinder covers and chrome front brake caliper cover.  Bike also came with a detachable windshield and fork-mounted storage bag.  The bike did come with the original air cleaner assembly, but I will be looking for a set of original exhaust, so if anyone knows where I can find a set, please let me know!

Probably a good 2 weeks before I'll get a chance to ride the thing and post a ride report, what with winter holding on 'til the bitter end around here, but I'm really excited to have a Blue Flame FXR3 in the garage!  I think it looks right at home with the other scooters. ;)

Here are a few pics in the poor lighting of my garage.  More to come after some daylight and some time spent detailing!

Nice one, Brian  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:  Dave is very knowledgable on those bikes, and I'm sure he was a big help in your research process.  Glad you got what you wanted and looking forward to seeing it in person one of these days!!

Jeff, I know it.  I had never seen the bike other than in photos before picking it up yesterday.  On the way over there Friday night I was thinkin', "Crap, I should have seen if jeffj would have gone and checked this thing out for me.  Duh."  Coulda, shoulda seen if you were free to meet me in Ft. Dodge yesterday, too.  Too excited to think straight, I guess. :nixweiss:  Sorry, Jeff. :(

Thanks for all the replies, everyone!

Great looking bike Brian!

I just wonder how many bikes a guy can own before the Mrs gives him divorce papers?? I want to get right up to, but not exceed that limit. If you figure that out, let me know.

LOL, Ken!  I guess it's different for every guy.  Mrs. tHunDer's a good woman for sure, but I've got to be getting close, so I'm gonna stop (for awhile ;) ;D)!

I know you will love it! In Sept of 2000 I missed buying a Blue flame buy 10 minutes. A gut walked in ahead of me and bought it. I in turn purchased a Yellow FXR4.

66 degrees out today and "several inches of snow" forecasted for Tuesday, so I had to go for a ride!  Man, what a bike! :huepfenjump3: :2vrolijk_21:  The sound of the V&H pipes is a little bit loud, but really just perfect for this bike . . . . very "hot rod" sounding with cackling between shifts! ;D 8)  Even though it is a few hundred pounds lighter than my other bikes, I thought the little Evo might feel like it was lacking power somewhat compared to the 95" and 103" TCs I have, but the thing runs out nice!  We haven't had any rain since the last snowfall, so there is still too much salt dust on the roads to take off for a long ride today.  I will really be looking forward to another opportunity to ride this bike!

Shot some more photos outside before I took off . . .

Brian, bike looks better in your garage!  They ride so well, you take her on 100 mile loop as soon as you can, i think you'll be impressed w/ power to weight ratio and responsiveness, nimble too!  Now i know 4 folks that own and enjoy the fxr3' blue flame bike. Keep in touch please.  dave...hdfxr3@aol.com

Dave, can't wait for a longer ride!  Today was just a teaser.  But they're forecasting 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow night and then more on Tuesday.  The crap just won't let up this year. :sauer005:

This model might be a good one to do a registery for.  There are few enough of them that we might actually be able to track the majority of them down.  I know where there are 4 others just from my hunt to buy one and just the other day a guy on here posted that he bought one, so we must be close to 20% of the way there, already.

I'll definitely keep in touch and you do the same!

Brian...next time you're down this way, we'll take a ride over to Dave's camera store and visit...there's a nice ride from here to Anniston, then another back to here via Mt. Cheaha...highest point in Alabama.

Thanks, Jorge!  I'm pretty pumped! :huepfenjump3:  I've got my top 3 all-time favorite CVOs with the addition of the blue FXR3. :2vrolijk_21:

I started to go down the V-Rod road when I hit some dead-ends pursuing a few of these.  Still really like those and would love to add one to the collection someday (would be cool to have Evolution, Twin Cam, and Revolution CVOs), but for now I couldn't be happier. :)

Brian

Congrats on the blue one!
I'm with Neal about the SERG though, a blue one would fit the scheme better.
Never saw this thread till today and started reading and thought, "Chit, Brian's done got the bike he was wanting."
Again congrats and remember an Andrews cam works wonders in one of those.

Thanks, Chip.  Yeah, and you shoulda got a charcoal/silver SERG instead of a blue one ;), but we go with what's available at the time when we're buying used.  Besides, if I get that B/O V-Rod someday, then it'll have some company in the garage. ;D

This may not be a popular response but I don't like the charcoal/silver SERG's.
For me, a true silver and black color combination are the 03 Anniversary bikes.
I didn't buy the blue SERG because it was available, I bought it after I saw Scooter's and Hobo's in Hot Springs and that color rang my chime!
A SERG in the 00 triple red combination rings my chime also but of the four available colors the blue and red are it for me.
Now Nancy may some day wind up with a 05 Cherry but for me I'm looking for a blue SEVRod.
The above is JMHO, not intended to diminish anyone else's choice of color!

That's why they give us choices! :2vrolijk_21:

I probably would have prefered a blue SERG when it came right down to it . . . the '01s have a little more "bling" on them than the '00s and I think I mentioned at the time that it would have been nice to have a blue SERG to match the B/B SEEG, but this B/O one was nice enough and only 10 miles from my front door and driving me friggin' nuts, so I bought it. :nixweiss:  Don't regret it for a moment and besides, being a Harley and being black and orange, you can't go wrong! ;)

You know it, Howie!  The emotions these bikes evoke are the reasons we ride them.  I'm really blessed to have the three awesome machines that I have, and I don't take it for granted!  That's what makes the feelings I feel all the more intense!  Three totally different machines and three totally different riding experiences, whodathunkit?!?. :nixweiss:  "I just want to be free to ride my machine(s)...!" 8) :P

This is what I say to myself at the end of each ride on my FXR2.

Don't know what baffles you have in the StraightShots (if any) but if you're looking for a slightly tamer tone with a pleasing stacatto "inhale" between gears and no power loss (actually a gain in mid-range), try Khrome Werks HP plus baffles.  Or if you want to take the sound down a notch with a slight loss in top end but a detectable gain in bottom end torque, try V&H Quiet Baffles.  V&H will tell you they won't fit but don't believe them.  I have them in mine, now.

Good for you!!!

I'd love a Blue. Only other CVO I really want...so I can have the matching set :)

It's beautiful. You going to leave it as-is, or get the stock air cleaner to restore it to "stock"?

Thanks, neanderpaul!  Bike is in the trailer as we "speak" to go to the dealer to get stock air cleaner re-installed and some other things that need attention taken care of.  Anyone know where I can get an insert for the air cleaner?  Mine is a bit scuffed up but the part is obsolete.  Chicago H-D showed stock according to the dealer here, but when I called them, they did not have the part. :(  Mine is still presentable and polished up fairly well, but if I could locate a new one, I'd buy it.   I suppose this is going to be about like finding a SERG cover though. :-\

It's been about two years now, but I dropped a wrench on mine  once--got a nice little dent-- and had the local dealer order another.  At that time, there were several FXR2 inserts on dealers' shelves here and there.  Did you get the dealer to do a national look for the part?  Might be out there somewhere and they can get it sent to them.  Mine came from a dealer in (I think) Indiana.  Good luck.

Stopped by the dealer to check on the FXR3 yesterday.  I had dropped it off the weekend before for 1) Ness Big Sucker (with stock A/C cover), 2) replace transmission top and clutch release covers (pitted), 3) new shoes (OEM Dunlop Elite S/Ts not available any longer, so went with standard fare H-D branded Dunlop 401s), 4) 5,000 mile service with brake bleeding and fork oil replacement, and 5) repair and repaint of rear fender to eliminate some scratches and a dent where the seat mounts.  The bike was without the rear fender when I saw it, but is otherwise looking SWEET!  Should be back together and home by next Saturday and I'll post pics. then.

Note that the ribbed clutch relase covers are a discontinued piece. :nervous:  Mine is coming from a dealer who had some NOS pieces, so if originality is a concern for you, better check around!  I will take my original cover and have it re-chromed to keep as a spare.

On a related note, I scored some sideplates on eBay because mine has some slight surface rust on them.  These are also discontinued.  So, the originals will go to the plater along with the clutch release cover and then in a box to save for . . . . . . whenever. :nixweiss:

Surprised to see some relatively common (and non-CVO specific) parts becoming difficult to find for these early CVOs. :o

Give him time, he will run out of floor space soon and then there's only one other option!

Yeah, shelves. :huepfenlol2:

O
I assumed that using floor space the shelves were full.
Mine are!
But I guess that's what happens when I assume!

Great looking bike Brian!

I just wonder how many bikes a guy can own before the Mrs gives him divorce papers?? I want to get right up to, but not exceed that limit. If you figure that out, let me know.

So far I have found it is at least 1 more than stated......I went over the limit this year and I am still here..........not sure if two over limit will fly?

Of course, removing a hyper charger could be viewed as rescuing the bike from terminal fuglyness rather then returning it to stock!  It's all perspective!

There are only a few mods I thought needed to be made to mine. Cosmetics really. Lay-down plate bracket. Swapped out the directionals, and switched the oval mirrors to round. Did put an S&S horseshoe breather on it, but we fabricated a steel bracket to mount the stock air cleaner cover for aesthetics.

I think the FXR3s are some of the best looking bikes off the floor HD has ever made. With the exception of the things I changed.

Leave 'em as close to stock as possible. Heads turn, and people ask.  Hell...seeing ANY FXR is becoming rare now. Most people have no idea what it is when you say "FXR"...Not just the CVOs but "FXR" is a foreign word to a lot of alleged riders.

Love what you've done...that Hypercharger took away from the bike.

I see pattern developing on returning to stock. I'm happy you removed  the hypercharger! I just logged 200 miles on my blue fxr3 yesterday. Smooth riding rubber mounted cvo evo. ..and you don't see yourself coming and going either. I guess i'll have to find Hoist one of these..since i see he is looking for one. I have pretty fxr4 yellow bike for sale now for 11,000. it has 5k miles..and only mod is se pipes and mikuni carb!

Dave, I saw your eBay auction for that bike awhile back.  It looked great in the photos and had me wondering how I could pull off a 4th bike with the missus. :sauer024:  That bike would make somebody a great scoot! :2vrolijk_21:

As far as going back to stock, yes, at this point I have everthing back to stock except the chrome lower belt guard, V&H pipes and the chrome primary.  The primary is the original one that had been chromed and it looks OK, but I'd like to eventually go back to the black wrinkle powdercoated original look.  I removed a few other trinkets of chrome since getting the bike like the front caliper cover and cylinder base covers - just didn't think they looked right on the bike (even though it was CHROME! :o ). :nixweiss:  I like the pipes and the belt guard, though.  Those will probably always stay! :2vrolijk_21:

Well don't expect my blue3 to stay stock. ::) ;D

Probably like to have mid controls. The one I'm looking at has forward controls. Was mid controls stock or was forward? I'll be trying to contact the owner today so Jim can check it out! :2vrolijk_21:

Mid controls with highway pegs up front is stock.

Longer-term I may not keep the internals of the motor stock either but do want to keep the outward appearance stock or close to stock.  Should be able to get 'er running stout (enough for me) with a cam and some head work. ;D

Good luck today, Howie!

Hoist,

As was just stated by 103tHunDer about the shifting being OEM at the midrange area, just another thought, I believe the bike performs better as well especially when entering curves your feet are in a more proper position....

It sounds like you are in pursuit of a blue FXR3, you guys on the east coast don't let the grass grow under your feet that's for sure!!!!!!

I am running a V~Thunder 3010 cam in my FXR2 and a buddy is running a Andrews EV~27 in his FXR3, he went originally from stock to a V~Thunder 3020 which was turning on too late for his liking so he went to the EV~27 and likes it very much.  I really like my V~Thunder 3010 cam in my FXR2.

Regards,

Tim

Exactly why the mids will be going back on Tim! :2vrolijk_21:

And yeap, you're right, can't let that grass grow. I think I found my bike. Just waiting for everything to fall into place. I'll know Wed night if I took it home! :huepfenjump3:

I've always run Sifton cams in Evos but they're no longer around. Black Widow bought out their stuff, but I'll keep those cams in mind too. It's really gonna be up to Vern. He'll know what to do with the motor when I'm ready. With 9600 miles on it, I can get away with a Stage1.............................................................

til the end of the season, anyway! ;D ;D ;D
