Air Cleaner Cover Paint
« on: July 06, 2005, 12:16:26 PM »

The paint keeps falling out of the lettering on the billet air cleaner cover on my '05 SEEG.  The dealer keeps touching it up, and it keeps falling out...

Any body else with this obviously small, but never the less, irritating issue?  and if so, what are you doing about it?

Coolbreeze, everytime you say something about it I check out both mine and my husband's but No.... no problems here. You'd think they'd just replace it. It has to be cheaper than the labor to keep touching it up.  [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

One would think that replacing a defective part would be the way to honor the warrantee, but apparently that would not be case on this.   And just to make things even more entertaining, the last time he did it, he used orange instead of red, so know the paint doesn't even match!  (at least the letters are small so it's not real noticable...) I had a similar problem with my derby cover first time I washed bike. The lettering peeled right off. I showed it to dealer and they had it replaced under warranty with no problems. I would request it be replaced since they have tried to repair it several times, and problem keeps coming back. You will have to give them the old part back, what I was told that anything that is proprietary to "CVO" bikes the parts have to be returned to Harley when they are replaced otherwise the dealer gets a big fine.

Here's an idea for you Breeze.  Draft a letter to the dealership that states the letter is their notification under the Oregon Lemon Law that it is your opinion they have been allowed a "reasonable number of attempts at repair" of the problem.  Those laws actually only are generally called in to play by things that will hinder the safety or real value of a vehicle.  But you'll at least get their attention  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I'd read of several who'd had a similar problem before I even received my bike.  So one of the very first things I did was spray a coat of a product I keep around the shop called Nyalic over the top of those painted scripts.  This stuff is clear, it won't eat paint, and is super protectant.  So far my painted scripts are fine.  So far......

Where can some of this "Nyalic" stuff be picked up? Can you still use chrome polish over it? Thanks

Look at www.nyalic.com .

FLH, I've used this stuff for years as a final coating on painted or polished parts.  Whenever I build an engine that goes for something that needs to stay looking nice it will be the last coat after primers and colors.  It's really good on polished or bare aluminum to keep them looking clean too.  Kind of pricey but it works wonderfully.

twolane, where do you purchase the Nyalic and what's the cost?  Do you apply it with spray gun or brush?  Sounds like just what I've been looking for........would it work on parts that get hot like engine pieces?      [smiley=nixweiss.gif]       spyder

Spyder it's the top coat/final coat I use on every engine I build.  Makes for a surface over painted parts or aluminum that is much easier to clean, stays looking better, keeps the pieces from staining up (especially on things like aluminum intake manifolds or rocker covers) and is just a generally good protectant that is very long lived.  If NASA originally spec'd the product to work as a coating that could withstand orbital conditions it ought to do pretty good for us; and in my experience it has.

So far as its effect on appearance is concerned it goes on clear and stays clear but does add a bit of gloss to the top coat.  Not bad.  But a little.

The stuff is kinda pricey.  If I remember right it's like $24.00 for a can the size of a normal aerosol spray paint can.  One can will usually do me like two coats on a big block Chevrolet with enough left to spray componentry and bracketry for the engine as well.  Take a look at www.nyalic.com for product specifications and ordering info.

I met a Pumpkin rider last year who had painted the "Screaming Eagle 103" on the jugs with the same orange paint. It looked real good! Anybody seen this, done this and want to pass on a picture and instructions?  [smiley=beerchug.gif]
