WTF-Surprise, No Clutch
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:56:01 AM »

I had a embarrassing moment today.. Was at the gas station pumping gas, got done, mounted up started to depart and WAM! dropped that 700 pound 2008 Ultra as if i had no choice. Anyone have this happen? I had to cock the bars left to power walk the bike as i straddled the seat around the car in front of me. Right at the moment I got the bars cocked all the way left, i lost the clutch grab and down she went. After three of us got her back up, I simulated cocking the bars all the way left again to try to figure out what happend, and I did. The clutch is engaging when the bars are cocked all the way left and starts right about the 75% point. When i got home i fiddled with the clutch adjustment and I didn't get anywhere. I guess something is screwed up down in the clutch. I'll let the warranty folks fix this one.

You guys should check this out before you get surprised like i did. I lucked out, no damage, at least to be seen. My macho pride is hurt a bit though.

Dropping a bike while straddling it has always been my norm...  I guess I don't have the coordination to walk and balance a bike at the same time  :(
I usually straddle mine and walk it, or wait until the obstacle has passed.  There is possible a trick to walking a bike that I never learned.

Do you have a hydraulic clutch, or a cable one?  I have hydraulic and while on the bike I will try turning the handlebars fully to see if this happens - possible drop it while straddling it too if it takes off with the handlebars turned hard left.

I don't have the CVO, I now have a 2008 Ultra. My 2007 CVO went through 2 motors within 6 months and Harley got their POS back. I choose to stay away from anything with a 110 and so far I'm happy with this 96 inch. The standard Ultras have a clutch cable. I had the bike at the dealer yesterday and it took him about 10-Min's to find the problem. When I installed my oil cooler the clutch cable was getting in my way so i tie wrapped the cable to the frame right above the voltage regulator. I guess this was causing the cable to bind up, i couldint figure out why, but once he removed the tie wrap the problem went away and the fix cost me a number 1 from In-N-Out.

Sporty..... take a look at where the adjuster nut on the cable...behind the front fender....turn the bars completely to the left and see if the cable housing has separated from the adjuster...this is not an uncommon problem.....but it hurts when it does happen. :soapbox:

They should have added a FBW clutch to that FBW throttle.  :2vrolijk_21:

Oh yeah, then the bike can have a mind of its own in two hands rather then one ??? .

Damn things start acting like a Lowrider with its hydraulics controllers all fouled up.  Yanking the FBW clutch in and out all on its own while the throttle does the hop-a-lane dance to a salsa beat.  Gawd I'm glad I got cables :huepfenlol2: .
